DEDICATION For her service, interest, and devotion to the Hanover community, the year- book staff proudly dedicates the 1984 REVONAH to the memory of Mrs. LaVonne Gray. LaVonne Bonnie Anderson began her lifetime of Hanover residency on July 21, 1928, spending her early years of education at the Hanover Schools and graduating as Salutatorian of her 1940 Senior Class. After completing a year at the University of Illinois, she married Frank A. Gray. They have three children and three grandchildren. Mrs. Gray's involvement in education did not end with her own, as she went on to serve on the Hanover School Board from 1975 until 1983, when ill health forced her to resign. LaVonne Gray was not only active in the Hanover Schools, but she was also a member of the Hanover United Methodist Church, the Hanover Woman's Club, the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Jo Daviess Republican Women. In 1983 LaVonne Gray received the Friend of Education Award from the Illinois Education Association. The award is a fitting one, as Bonnie Gray was indeed a friend . . . a friend to education, to the community, and to the people of Hanover. She will always be fondly remembered for her achieve- ments, service, and her love for her Hanover community. Revonah Center rear, clockwise: Cathy Schleuning, Penny Bourrette, Dina Wild, Connie Fobber, Suzi Geiger, Jodi Shireman, Kris Hamil, Joanie Schaible, Darla Kistler, Steve Wilbricht, Rick Carson, Brad Zigler, David Miller, Nisey Griffin, Moni Murphy, Stephanie O'Donnell, Sabina Farrey, Jennifer Vesely, Mary Gable, Denise Middendorf, Amy Callahan, Tammy Reitz, Laura Nolan, Roxi Cliff, Darcy Potter, Kim Hastings, Clancy Sheridan, Dawn Kistler, Ben Otis. Center, 1-r: Shelley Jo Stevenson (Managing Ed.), Ms. Shari Farral (Adv.), Angela Boop (Production Ed.) Assembling the 1984 REVONAH proved to be quite a challenge — meeting deadlines, financial requirements, selling books, etc. I would like to take this time to especially thank the REVONAH staff for their time and effort with the ad drive and layouts. Without their help, Shelley, Ms. Farral, and I would have been carrying an extra-heavy load. Outside the REVONAH staff, we received an outstanding amount of contribu- tions. I would like to thank Mr. Chandler and Mr. Stone for their photography; Kevin Patterson and Mary Baker for modeling the cover photo; Mr. Dusek for his ideas and advice; and especially the Hanover State Bank, Eaton Corporation, and Whistling Wings for providing financial assistance. To Ms. Farral, I extend my unmeasurable thanks for her photography, help and advice. To Shelley, a big thank you for her assistance and for giving up her time. Shelley was Managing Editor of the REVONAH. She is to be commended for her fine work on ad drives, managing the finances, and photography arrangements. Also, a thank you to Stephanie O'Donnell for her help on numerous layouts and type sheets. It's people like you that make this job much easier. Congratulations to you all. I hope you will see a fantastic accomplishment throughout the 1984 REVONAH. Thanks again! CirzpJa- 8 ocp Angela Boop Production Editor 1984 REVONAH BILL'S PHILLIPS 66 Hanover, Illinois 61041 591-3338 Board Of Education Board's Message From left: Anne Barrash (secretary), John Liberg, Larry Straight, Keith Unangst (president), Jerry Callahan, Don Edgerton, and Chris Dunham There is nothing new under the sun. These words apply to remarks made to graduating classes everywhere. We suspect that the responses of graduates, almost with exception, are, Ho, hum! So what's new? Even so, we want to say to you, the Hanover High School Class of 1984, congratulations and best wishes! Congratulations on completing a course of education which, we hope, has given you the basic tools of intelligent citizenship; the ability to reason and to think critically, independent of pressure and propaganda; and, the ability to face change, as surely you will. Now is the time for choices. Do not hesitate to make them even though the direction you choose now may not be the one you will ultimately follow. For some of you there may be many beginnings. However, each beginning may very well help direct you toward a future that is the right one, the best one for you. And so, dear graduates, we wish you wisdom. We wish you courage. We wish you purpose. On to your new beginning. -Hanover School Board Anne Barrash ADAM'S GARAGE Hanover, Illinois 61041 Valuable Employees Charlotte Mills (Aide) Millie Rummel (Aide) David Sheppard (Aide) Barb Steinhagen (Aide) Kim Douvikas, Mary Kistler (Janitors) Barb Steinhagen, Marion Lord (Cooks) Marilyn Eberhardt Secretary Bookkeeper Joanne Nobis Secretary WILLIAM TONNE, D.D.S. You have completed a very important facet of your life. If you have learned from your high school experience that there is no short cut to excellence, you have profited from being here. Excellence and the pursuit of excel- lence are achieved by determination and hard work. As you look back on your high school days and as you underclassmen look ahead, you'll find that the times you achieved excellence, through hard work, are your proudest moments. As our graduates venture out into the world and our underclassmen fill the ranks, let's establish one of our goals as the pursuit of excellence in whatever we do. This pursuit will not be easy or quick. It never was nor will it be. The pursuing of excellence is a life long goal that is attainable by all of us and certainly worth the effort, for it benefits us in untold ways. Kent Hammer Supertendent Principal's Message The school year is over. The Seniors will march down the aisle. The underclassmen have their cards and credits. What king of a year was it? Did you earn all your credits? Did you participate in your school activi- ties? You still have a chance next year to be a contributing and participating member of your school. I'll wager that you did not notice how fast the year flew by. The Seniors' long awaited graduation day has come and gone. I hope they all left with some sense of satisfaction with themselves. Socrates stated, Know thyself. How do we consider in our minds that quota- tion? We hope the Seniors Know thyself and will be loyal to a moral standard and be proud of themselves, their family, their church, community and school. Best Wishes to the Seniors! -Bert Murphy Principal LYNDA'S BEAUTY SHOP 303 Monroe Hanover, Illinois 61041 SENIORS KINDERGARTEN 3rd Row: T. Ramirez, T. Price, G. K ilson. S. Schleuning, ). Roose. G. Kevin Patterson shows off his camouflage pants (1). Connie, Dina and Cathy show off the handkerchief bandanas, blue jean jackets, sunglasses, and punk hair cuts (2). Also, another popu- larity was break dancing and the moon walk. Wendy's hamburger launched an advertisement campaign that soon became a popular phrase - Where's the Beef? (3). Dina shows off her Wild hightops (4). Pierced ears were the rage; sometimes three or four an ear! (5) It didn't take long for Jesus tocatch on to the Michael Jackson beat (6). Ben Otis poses for the van off-the-wall shoes (7). Care Bears were a big seller this year. As you can see, Nicole Schleuning is quite proud of her furry friends as she shows them to Kris (8). Tammy, Denise and Penny are enjoying a game while Garfield and Dennis the Cabbage Patch Kid overlook (9). Another wacky wonder was fingernail polish of all shades of colors (10). Trevor and Ed demonstrate the popular video machine (11). GALENA GENERAL STORE Groceries, Gas and Diesel Highway 20 Galena, Illinois c?
