REVONAH DEDICATION Leo Whalen may have started out small, but he is now a big part of Hanover’s community. Although his first job paid only 15c a day, he was not discouraged. After his graduation from Hanover High School in 1934, he ventured into the business field opening a sandwich shop and then progressing to a restaurant, the Hanover Recreation Hall, and a tavern. In 1960, Mr. Whalen bought a farm southeast of Hanover. It was here that the “Mallard Dream” was born; it was this farm which became known as Whistling Wings. This simple beginning has since grown into the world’s largest Mallard duck operation, a business which has supplimented the entire community. Mr. Whalen received a Merit Award for Outstanding Leadership, Service, and Dedication from the North American Game Bird Association and the Shooting Preserve Operations in 1978. Because of his efforts, Hanover was established in 1980 as the World center for Mallard duck production. Mr. Whalen has been active in many organizations for the interest of Hanover and was actually one of the founders of Hanover Days. Since he has connections throughout North America, Mr. Whalen has given many people, especially Hanover students, the opportunity to see points of interest in Canada, Mexico, and the United States through the delivery of Mallard ducks. For all his service to Hanover and the surrounding area, the dedication of the 1983 REVONAH goes to Mr. Leo Whalen. A Special Thank You From left: John Liberg, Director; Darlene Coffey, Treasurer; Judy Sheridan, Secretary; Karen Harkness, President; Tim Sheridan, Vice-President. Not shown, Peg Otis and Rosemary Haring, Directors. Red Devil Booster Club The RED DEVIL BOOSTERS were organized and at work in a matter of a few months in 1981. We grew out of open town meetings called to see what could be done to avert some of the cuts that we realized were necessary in the Hanover School budget. Recognizing the importance of the school and its programs to community life and pride, we wanted to see what we, as members of the community, could salvage. In reveiwing the budget, we felt we could guarantee to raise enough money to retain boys’ baseball and girls’ basketball. We felt it best to raise the money for a specific purpose rather than for the general school fund. Also, we felt that we could exceed our initial goal of $6,000 and that the excess could go to the school to be used as we mutually felt most advantageous. Since then, our funds have been put to use by the school to support a number of extracurricular activities other than sports! All this was accomplished with everyone’s help in our various fund raising activities. Membership in the Booster Club was high and included students, school personnel, town folk, and country folk. This, our second year, we feel will outdo our first and will enable us to contribute even more to the school. We look forward to our new fund raising activities including our yearly membership drive. This is a yearly need as we work to support our school, a hub of community life in Hanover! Board Of Education From left: Annette Barrash, Roger Yardley, Bonnie Gray (secretary), Keith Unangst (president), Jerry Callahan, Don Edgerton, Larry Straight Board’s Message Congratulations to the graduating Class of 1983. You are about to begin a very important time of your life. Soon you will be asked to contribute to the society of our fast moving world. We are sure that you, with the training and knowledge you have received in the elementary and high school of the Hanover Community Schools, will be able to do an outstanding job. A few short years ago you looked forward to the “top floors” of your school, and they seemed so very far away. Now as you leave the “top floors”, you are looking to a new height in your careers. Thanks to Mr. Hammer, Mr. Murphy and the entire faculty of your school and to the continued efforts of the Board, you have received an outstanding education. The Board wishes you all the best of luck as you enter the outside world. •Hanover School Board WILLIAM TONNE, D.D.S. Hanover, Illinois 61041 ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE My sincere congratulations to the Class of 1983. The diplo- ma you have worked for and received contains no guaran- tees for success and happiness. No piece of paper contains such promises. The education you have received at H.H.S. does give you the tools to carve your way in this ever changing world. Use those tools to the best of your ability. You owe yourself no less. Again, congratulations on a job well done! -Kent Hammer Superintendent PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE Commencement has arrived; the long school year is over. Now that you think about it - didn’t it go fast? What you were worried about in the fall and winter has long passed. Most of your memories are of happy times, and you will remember these and your classmates for life. The rest of your life will go faster and will be full of worries, happy times and new experiences. You will probably marry, will become parents, and will settle somewhere you did not expect to live. You will grow up to be responsible adults and we hope good citizens. Certain values never will change: loyalty, love of family, love of country, your church and your personal values. Be proud of your family, commu- nity, church and above all, be proud of yourself. To all the underclassmen, graduation will come your way. In the meantime, enjoy school; take part in your activities. We pass this way but once! God bless all of you and congratulations to the Seniors! -Bert Murphy Principal 6 JERRY’S TAP Hanover, Illinois 61041 Mrs. Sue Wilbricht - Clarke College, Kindergarten, Librarian Mrs. Jane Kumor - Northern 111. Putting together the yearbook is hard work, and it takes determination as well as time. It taught me a great sense of responsibility and a need for organization. Although I spent many hours preparing the 1983 REVONAH, its publication would not have been possible if not for the members of the staff. They went on ad drives and helped out when they may have had other things to do. I wish to thank them for all their time and effort. I cannot express enough appreciation to the following people: Angie, Shelley, Sandra, and Greg. They stayed after school to type, worked on countless layouts, and took endless photographs. Without their effort, we would still be working on page 2. To Miss Farral, advisor, a special thank you. Without her help, there would be no book. What was not frustrating was the way the players kept working. The test of how much heart a team has is how they finish a season after so many losses. Instead of hanging it up for the year, we won two of our last five regular season games and were close in the other three. I will always remember the 1982-83 team, not for their record but for their courage and desire. Mr. Dale Teberg GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL AND BASKETBALL As we look through this yearbook to recapture memories of the past year, we find the Fresh-Soph volleyball team winning the conference tourna- ment and finishing in 2nd place in the conference. The Varsity volleyball team finished the season in 2nd place. One of their highlights was beating the conference champion Thomson in two games at home. The last basketball game of the season also meant the end of girls’ basketball at HHS. Although our numbers were small, the seven young ladies who finished the season did their best from start to finish. I wish the Seniors the best of everything and urge the underclassmen to make every effort to make “Big Red” number one! Ms. Judy Klinkkammer FRESH-SOPH BASKETBALL AND BASEBALL Our Fresh-Soph basketball season ended on a winning note this year. Although we did not accomplish what we had hoped for, the team always got along and showed good sportsmanship. The baseball season had its share of excitement, especially because of our Seniors contributions: Robert Wolter’s homeruns, Todd Bonar’s timely hits, Todd Hasting’s head-first slides, Ron Stine’s fielding, and Greg Ha- mil’s baserunning. We had a 6-6 season and took third place. Also, we beat Chadwick for the first time in six years. Thanks, Seniors, and Good Luck to you all! Because of their skill in baseball, the following boys were selected: (from left) Ron Stines, Kevin Orth, Robert Wolter, and Todd Bonar. LOIS MILLER, Agent for TRI-STATE TOURS Hanover, Illinois 61041 ois Conductor's Message Hanover High School participated in many musical events this year. Our two choruses sang in the annual school Christmas Program as well as for Organizations Contest. Several choral members also participated in County Music Festival at Elizabeth and some in Solo and Ensemble Contest. Our Swing Choir participated in the Christmas Program, Contest and performed at the Spring Band Concert. Band members have had their share of activities, too. We marched in the Oktoberfest and Memorial Day Pa- rades, played for the Veteran’s Day service and for Armed Forces Day at the Savanna Army Depot. We also competed in Organizations Contest, and, as usual, we provided music for all boys’ home basketball games. Several members participated in Solo and Ensemble Contest and County Music Festival. Our annual Spring Concert was a success. We will be losing several members from Band and Cho- rus this year at graduation; they will be missed since most are outstanding musicians. We wish all of them and the rest of the Class of 1983 the best in their future plans! -Mrs. Edith Dwinnels Music Director Chorus Officers Front (1-r): Brenda Ferrell (president), Moni Murphy (librarian).
