The commencement day you have been waiting for has arrived. All of us in our school have just completed another successful year. Many of the things you were worried about in Sept., Nov., and Feb. are long gone. The Seniors can reflect on their years in school and all their memories they will cherish for life. I would ask that the graduating Seniors always maintain a deep respect and love for your family, church, school and community. These are the things that are dear and near to all of us in our way of life. Respect yourself, as you are a person of great dignity, and the way you view yourself will determine your life's fulfillment. God Bless all of you. Mr. Murphy SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE Each second we live is a new and unique moment of the universe, a moment that never was before and will never be again. As young adults you are like these moments. You are unique. In all the world there is no other person exactly like you. In the millions of years that have passed, there has never been another person like you. You have the capacity for anything. As you leave Hanover High School, do not cheat yourself from reaching the potential that lies within you. Make big plans, then work and strive to make those plans a reality. It has been a pleasure to have been associated with you and to have been part of your education. Congratulations and best of luck to a group of unique people. REVONAH EDITOR'S MESSAGE As editor of the 1981 Hanover High School REVONAH, there are many rewards. As my staff and I worked on the REVONAH page by page, we had the joy of seeing it transformed from a handful of pic- tures, a cropper, and lay out sheets to a book filled with fact, fun, and memories. This year the staff was larger than usual and filled with beginners who were discovered to have much talent. Miss Farral also put in much time as our sponsor. Many of the pictures in this year's REVONAH were taken and de- veloped by Miss Farral. These pictures along with those taken by Wayne Chandler of Mayfair Studios make our annual the interesting and action-filled book it is. Our staff would also like to thank Mike Vir- lee, our Herff Jones representative, for all his hard work and advice. The yearbook staff hopes the 1981 REVONAH holds many lasting memories for each of you. Sincerely, Editor D.A.R. AWARD Mary Jo McCormick was awarded the Daughters of American Revolution award. This honor is based on leadership, academics, dependability, and loyalty. Mary Jo has shown all these qualities throughout her Hanover High School years. 37 Joining the society this year are Mary Kay Boop, Suzanne Griffin, Brenda Haring, Mary Jo McCormick, Kerry Sheridan and Debbie Steinhagen. We played our best match against a strong Scales Mound team in the conference tournament, taking them to three games. Unfortunately, we seemed to be plagued all year with the inability to keep up our in- tensity for three full games. Our Frosh-Soph team finished second in the conference this year, and we are looking forward to many of those Sophomores giving us help at the Varsity level next year. 53 GIRLS' BASKETBALL VARSITY On floor: J. This team was a difficult group to coach. When we played togeth- er, as all good teams should, we were tough to beat. Unfortunate- ly, we had players who were concerned more with their individual performances than with the success of the team. Therefore, we were not as successful as anticipated. However, our “Loyalty Day victory over Thomson, the “Homecoming win over Eliza- beth, and the defeats we handed Savanna provided moments we all will enjoy remembering! Coach Becker 57 BASEBALL Row 1: M. Basten, R. Curley, M. Wild, B. Cal- lahan, D. Jeffers, M. Miller. Row 2: T. Miller, T. Hastings, D. Wills, N. Flack, T. Bonar, J. Cot- tral. Row 3: Coach Ku- mor, J. Nobis, R. Wolter, M. Murphy, S. Buck, M. Aadson, M. Griffin. The 1981 baseball season has seen its ups and downs. When the pitching held up, the fielding went down. When the bat- ting was up, the pitching was down. Even with the ups and downs, we still had a fun season. The boys gave their all, showed their sportsmanship, and never gave up. I'm proud of all the boys for giving up their free time and participating in this sport. I tip my hat to the seniors: Mike Aadson, Kevin Murphy, Randy Curley, and Ned Flack and wish them luck. As for the rest of the team and myself, we look forward to next season because the team will come through in '82. Coach Kumor 58 ATHLETIC BANQUET At the annual Lions Club Athletic Banquet on May 4, Kevin Mur- phy and Mary Jo McCormick were pre- sented with the Sports- manship Awards. The guest speaker (lower left) was John McDou- gal who is presently the head coach at Northern Illinois University. All-Conference Players: (bottom) Karen Hopkins, Todd Bonar, Jennifer Peterson. Top: Brian Callahan, Tricia No- lan, David Ballard, Brenda Haring, Kevin Murphy, and Mary Jo McCormick. 59 STUDENT LIFE LI'L ABNER i 62 LOYALTY DAY On Loyalty Day, December 19, 1980, we paid a tribute of loyalty not only to our school by dressing in red and white but also to American hostages in Iran by tying 52 bright red ribbons on the community Christmas tree. Ribbons, each bearing a hostage's name, were hung by the grade school children. Mrs. Holland, mother of hos- tage Colonel Leland Holland, shared in the ceremony. Also present were Senator James Gitz, Representative Nord Swanstrom, and a speaker for Lynn Martin, mem- ber of Congress. 64 HOSTAGE VISIT Colonel Leland Holland, an ex-hostage from Iran, visited Hanover High School February 18, 1981, not quite a month after being released on January 20, 1981. His speech concerned his captivity and treatment in Iran. The classes and public were given the opportunity to ask questions. Following his talk, students had the chance to talk personally with Colonel Holland and to get auto- graphs. The Hanover community presented Colonel Hol- land and his mother with a photo album which included pictures of the Hanover Christmas tree dedication in his honor. 65 All students and faculty participated in wearing their favorite T-shirt that ranged from the comical to the philosophical. The winner for the best T-shirt was Sarah Barrash with her anatomy shirt. 66 Many students got into the hoedown spirit and dressed in Western wear. We had cowboys, cowgirls, and Indians all over the school. The best Western costume went to Peggy Girot for her bandit disguise. 67 HOMECOMING SKITS Each class and the faculty once again put on skits to urge the Red Devils on to victory. The student body had some good laughs, and the team got some spirit brew- ing behind them. The pep band played for the entertainment of all. 68 HOMECOMING POSTERS This year, as always, the Homecoming posters were created and put up by each class. A group of faculty members then voted on the individual poster's con- tent and neatness. This year the Seniors with Terra- pins will be 'Seaing' Stars came in first. Places and posters were as follows: Second place: Juniors— Put a Girdle on a Turtle- Support Your Team Third place: Sophomores— The Devil Made Me Do It! Fourth place: Freshmen— Defeat the Terrapins and Make It Snappy 69 HOMECOMING The 1981 Homecoming had a special attraction. This year there was a tie so we had two Homecoming Queens! Vickie Hamil and Kerry Sheridan (right) were crowned by Captain Kevin Murphy. The other candidates were Brenda Haring (below) and Suzanne Griffin (center right). The court (bottom right) con- sisted of Suzanne Griffin, Mike Weede, Vickie Hamil, Paul Girot, Jeff Peterson, Kerry Sheridan, Doug Wills, and Brenda Haring. PROM The Junior-Senior Prom on April 24, 1981, was held at Buck's Barn, Thomson, Illinois. All danced to and were entertained by the sounds of Thunder . This year's emblem was an hour- glass with the theme— A Time For Us . A TIME FOR US 74 AWARDS DAY The Awards Day program honored those people who, throughout the year, earned various honors or awards in academics, music, student council, and sports. 75 HEA HONORS BANQUET The 1981 Honors Banquet hosted by the Hanover Education Association was held on May lfe. The guest speaker was Melvin Smith, president of the Illinois Education Association. Eleven juniors and seniors and their parents were honored.
