SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Fifty-three radiant faces entered Hanover Community School on that day of days in September of 1945. We were divided into two separate classes under Miss Perry and Mrs. Sullivan. We entered the second grade under the guidance of Miss Ischi. Our class had dwindled to forty-five due to the end of war effort. In the back of the room we had a play grocery store where we were taught the fundamentals of arithmetic. Miss Thomas was our third grade teacher. Most of the year was spent learning to write and at the end of the year our class visited the Brookfield Zoo In Chicago. Miss Graves, our fourth grade teacher sponsored our class in a Dutch program, which we put on for Open House. She also taught us the multiplication tables. Our fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Ehredt, taught us the principles of Geography. It was this year we staged an oper- etta for a Christmas program. Mrs. Harksen was our sixth grade teacher. This year we presented a Valentines' play and went to the Palisades for our class picnic. We entered Junior High School with Mrs. Keene as our seventh grade teacher. We were now preparing to enter High School by brushing up on American History, English and Practical Math. This was the year we had our first par- ty in the evening. Our last teacher downstairs was Mrs. Morrison. Our basketball team won for the first time for Hanover Grade School the county championship. On May 29. 1953 our class of twenty-nine students graduated into Hanover High School. Our class advisor for four years has been Mr. Book, to whom we graciously dedicate this yearbook. Most of our money for the Senior trip was earned by selling magazines, having dances, suppers and bakesales, and giving plays. As Freshmen our main activity was a carnival given in cooperation with the Seniors. During our Sophomore year we put on Elmer and had some chili suppers. Our Junior year we staged The Curious Savage, were in charge of the concessions at all home athletic events, and presented our Junior-Senior Prom, On A Tropical Isle. Our Senior year was filled with many exciting events including our play, The Man Who Came To Dinner, our trip to New York and Washington, and graduation. The Homecoming Queen for '56 was Shirley Cook and honorary captain, Leroy Curley. So with all the pleasant memories of our twelve years together we part, each to go his own way in the great wide future that lies ahead. I lyji | ,jm ni rr?- — PROPHECY It is Saturday, June 27, 1967. We are attending our tenth annual re- union of the graduating class of 1957. In the reception line we see the President of our class, WAYNE WHA- LEN, who is Senator of our great state and is said to have great chances for the presidency. Then we see Mrs. Gerald Kness, formerly known to us as JUDY REED, who has made a name for herself in designing truck interiors. She is off in a corner rehearsing with her two little boys for the cheering that comes later in the evening. Next we see DENNIS McCORMICK, owner and operator of Chicago's largest funeral home inquiring, When do we eat? Looks like he is getting a little fat around the belt. As we look across the room we see JUDY HENSCHEL and JAMES CALVERT, who are again pardners. This time they are owners and operators of the Town Hall movies and they are arguing over whose name should come first on the lights. Standing nearby talking to the Alumnas is the great actress Lola Gena- brigida, known to us as SHIRLEY COOK, talking of her latest movie, Spagetti by Candlelight. In the group talking to our star is DR. WILLIAM MILLER of Washing- ton D.C. Between Lola's recitals he tells of his great medical cases and occasionally goes and checks to see if any Important calls or telegrams have come for him. Coming in the doorwe see MISS ENDRESS HAUG, who discovered a very good beauty treatment using Mississippi Mud, and now has a chain of beauty salons in the East, with headquarters at Washington. Out of boredom she has taken a part time secretarial job with the Senator. With ENDRESS is DOROTHY KRIPPENDORF, known to her T.V. audience as Dotty has taken time from her Saturday night show which has replaced George Gobel. Getting out of her Cadillac we see MISS SUSAN SCHNEIDER, President of the largest printing and publishing firm in the country, being escorted by Prince Monaco of Rainer. She makes no comment of her coming plans. Next we see MRS. YVONNE CAMPBELL with her husband and two darling children who are quite grown up now. Yvonne is nationally known as Mrs. America and Hanover is very proud of her. In a corner opposite Mrs. Kness, we see JUNE BRANDT, DELORES WESCOTT and PATRICIA BRANDT reminiscing old times. JUNE BRANDT, who is still going to college, hasn't made up her mind as to what she wants to do. She has had several good offers for modeling jobs. DELORES WESCOTT, who has made teaching a career and is teaching Commercial subjects in Savanna High School, has written several books on How to Get Shorthand in Ten Easy Lessons. PATRICIA BRANDT, who is dazzling us all by the size of her diamonds, is also the owner of a chain of Daniel Boone Camps. Next we see PEGGY HECKLER of Peggy's Place , which has proved to be the swankiest restaurant from here to Dubuque, talking to her bouncer, LEROY CURLEY. In high school days LEROY was a bowler, but now his Wednesday nights are spent boxing. LEROY leaves PEGGY and joins singer, LYNN ZUBER, who has been making records between her night club performances. Her latest record- ing is, You Can't Take It With You , which may be a great hit. As the program is about to begin we see Mrs. Allen Smith, formerly known as KAY WINTER, excusing herself for being late, but she says that they had a rush order of picnic tables. The program is now beginning. Master of Ceremonies, AUSTIN MILLER, who has flown up from his oil wells in Texas starts the pro- gram by calling CAROL FLACK and RUTH RYNIEWICZ up to the stage for music entertainment. CAROL and RUTH have sold millions of records of their latest record- ing Blue Moon , which is said by the critics to be better than Elvis Pres- ley. Next in the music department, we have WAYNE THEISEN and DUANE REITZ who have taken Liberace and George's place. Their music is a combination of Liberace and Spike Jones. Tonight they will play Gene Blue Bop” as a specialty for us. Next Mr. Miller calls the speaker of the evening to the platform. It is none other than Prof. RICHARD SPEER, who in his spare time travels around to schools giving pep talks. After the speaker has finished, WAYNE and DUANE play, CAROL and RUTH sing and the rest of the class of '57 dance far into the night. We leave them there. JUNIOR CLASS ROW 1: J. Glrot, M. Duffy, D. Niagara Falls. Boy, were we wet! SENIOR TRIP We left Hanover In a drizzle of rain on Friday, May 10, at 4:30 P.M. All of us were eating our sack lunches before we got to Savanna and none of us slept very soundly that night. Saturday morning we stopped at Detroit for breakfast and it was still raining. It was 3:00 P.M. when we arrived at Niagara Falls, Canadian side. We were all anxious to see the Falls, tired as we were. They were simply beautiful even through the rain and fog. A few of us donned big black rain coats and boots and walked under the falls. A few others took a cable car across the Falls. The next morning we left for New York City via the turnpike. We arrived there too late for the Ed Sullivan show but in time to take in a few of the night events. We went to Coney Island, Radio City and a few of the big restaurants. In the morning we all took a three hour boat ride around Manhattan Island. From the boat we saw Grant's Tomb, the Statue of Liberty, (the bottom half as the rain cleared but the fog did not) Yankee Stadium and the Polo Ground and several liners from various countries. After the boat trip we visited an Italian liner that was in dock. Later in the day we toured the United Nations building, Rockefeller Plaza, and the Empire State building. We left New York at 12:00 that night and after another sleepless night arrived baggy-eyed in Washington, D.C., 5:30 Tuesday morning. Our rooms were very barbaric and not being able to adjust so early in the morning we were all ready to leave. But after staying there a few days it felt just like home! The second morning we visited Leo Allen at the Capitol. He showed us around the Capitol and introduced us to Postmaster Summerfield, Senator Knowland and Speaker Joseph Martin. Then he took us into the Vice-President's office, where we all sat in his chair! At this time the Senate was in session and we all went in. Nixon was pre- siding and among the members present were Margaret Chase Smith and Lyndon Johnson. We saw and did many Interesting things in Washington. Among them were the White House, Arlington Ceme- tery, where we witnessed the changing of the guard, the Jefferson Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the Washing- ton Monument, those who had enough energy left climbed to the top, the National Art Gallery, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, F.B.I. building. Archives building, the Bureau of Printing and Engraving, where our bills are print- ed, the Smithsonian Institute, and Mount Vernon. With the money that Leo Allen gave us we all ate together at a sea food restaurant at the wharf. We left Washington Friday morning and went to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where we fought the war all over a- gain. That night was spent at Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. The next morning we got up early and drove as far as Van Wert, Ohio. We all went out for dinner again, this time on the class. Sunday morning finally arrived and we were all getting anxious to get home. At 4:30 P.M. a bus load of mighty tired but still singing Seniors with all their suitcases and packages arrived back in Hanover. We were met by our mothers who had prepared a Welcome Home party with plenty of food. We all had a wonderful trip and will never forget this experience. One of our many stops! O-h-h those bus rides.
