Hawks Named Co-Champs OfYCL-II League First Since '64 The 1987 football season for the Mighthawks was one of brilliance and frustration. The hawks could claim one of the best offenses in the county. In fact they led all other teams with a total of 320 yards per game. The Mighthawk defense was also very stingy in that they allowed less than two touchdowns per game. After losing the first three games to Delone. Walkersville, and South Western, by a touchdown or less, the hawks knew they had to get their act together. The following week, they beat Eastern 26-0. Panther Valley, the following game, proved to all of the players that they had the potential to play well against any team they faced. The hawks played a larger and supposedly better team in Panther Valley and came out being tied 28-28. This game was the turning point in the season. From this game on, the Mighthawks had only one loss. The first win after the Panther Valley game was against Kennard Dale. The hawks then fought a hard battle with Susquehannock winning 25-13. One of the outstanding games of the season came against York Catholic when the Mighthawks were battling for the Y.C.I.A.A. Division II title. The hawks rolled up over 400 yards of offense enabling them to win 26-10. The irony was that after a 21-7 loss to West York they had to share the Y.C.I.A.A. Division II title with the team they had beaten, York Catholic. After the loss to West York, most teams would have relaxed and not have worried about the rest of the games, however, the hawks pulled together and beat Vo-Tech to assure themselves of a share in the county title. They then beat Littlestown 23-6, a team that had suffered only one loss all year. The Mighthawks also were honored by having some of their players selected for the York County All-Star game. First team honors were given to Shawn Mar- chio, Corey Hahn, Steve Hollinger, Todd Klinedinst, and Mitch Lehigh. Second team honors went to Dan Frey, Todd Klinedinst, Meil Johnson, Scott Staub, and Scott Miller. The 1987 Mighthawks featured a powerful offense and a bend but not break'' defense. They also had a YCL Division II Coach of the Year, Jack Connor, who led them to their first county championship since 1964.
