1988 Homir Hanover High School Hanover, Pennsylvania Tomorrow Is A Wonderful Parting after graduation is a very difficult time in our lives; many of us have been friends since Kindergarten. Together we played on playgrounds, suffered through the traumatic middle school years, survived be- ing greenies , and actually received our Se- nior Privileges! Some of us may feel great sorrow over leaving all this behind us. in- stead of mourning the past, however, we should rejoice that we had a chance to have such fun times. The friendships we made will never be forgotten. The Hanover Public School District gave us the foundation for our education. With our expanded intellect, we began dreaming about our futures. And now, those futures are upon us. As we leave for college, full-time work, or technical school, all of us wish to lead suc- cessful lives. Working to our fullest potential Tnn after high school can turn that dream into a reality. As we say farewell to our class- mates, we will be challenged by new situations and problems. We won't have the everyday support of all the familiar Hanover faces. It is time for us to become adults and to take care of ourselves. Ho matter where we and our friends may go we all are facing the same new world. Remember our class motto and gain strength from its mes- sage: Tomorrow is a wonderful dream, and yesterday is a precious memory. FALL Football Homecoming Miss Hornir Bonfire Marching Band All-School Play Girls' Tennis Volleyball Golf Field hockey Freshsmen Sports Freshmen Faculty 8 9 Hawks Named Co-Champs OfYCL-II League First Since '64 The 1987 football season for the Mighthawks was one of brilliance and frustration. The hawks could claim one of the best offenses in the county. In fact they led all other teams with a total of 320 yards per game. The Mighthawk defense was also very stingy in that they allowed less than two touchdowns per game. After losing the first three games to Delone. Walkersville, and South Western, by a touchdown or less, the hawks knew they had to get their act together. The following week, they beat Eastern 26-0. Panther Valley, the following game, proved to all of the players that they had the potential to play well against any team they faced. The hawks played a larger and supposedly better team in Panther Valley and came out being tied 28-28. This game was the turning point in the season. From this game on, the Mighthawks had only one loss. The first win after the Panther Valley game was against Kennard Dale. The hawks then fought a hard battle with Susquehannock winning 25-13. One of the outstanding games of the season came against York Catholic when the Mighthawks were battling for the Y.C.I.A.A. Division II title. The hawks rolled up over 400 yards of offense enabling them to win 26-10. The irony was that after a 21-7 loss to West York they had to share the Y.C.I.A.A. Division II title with the team they had beaten, York Catholic. After the loss to West York, most teams would have relaxed and not have worried about the rest of the games, however, the hawks pulled together and beat Vo-Tech to assure themselves of a share in the county title. They then beat Littlestown 23-6, a team that had suffered only one loss all year. The Mighthawks also were honored by having some of their players selected for the York County All-Star game. First team honors were given to Shawn Mar- chio, Corey Hahn, Steve Hollinger, Todd Klinedinst, and Mitch Lehigh. Second team honors went to Dan Frey, Todd Klinedinst, Meil Johnson, Scott Staub, and Scott Miller. The 1987 Mighthawks featured a powerful offense and a bend but not break'' defense. They also had a YCL Division II Coach of the Year, Jack Connor, who led them to their first county championship since 1964. It was the traditional Homecoming ceremony sponsored by the Student Council. It was a memorable evening for all. The evening began with a small parade to Sheppard and Myers Field. The court rode in cars decorated by their respective classes. The Hanover Alumni Band accompanied the court and provided the upbeat tempo. Following the band's performance, the Homecoming court was presented. Each girl was escorted by her father. The senior class was very happy to have Jody Hock- ensmith crowned as the 1987 Homecom- ing Queen. The crown was presented to Miss Hockensmith by Karen Ebert, a mem- ber of last year's court. Others in the senior court were Melinda Bortner, Melanie Caler, Jill Hartlaub, Amy Huntzinger, and Kim Rebert. The Junior Princess was Denise Foreman. The Sopho- more class chose Angie Rohrbaugh, while Jackie Vockroth represented the Fresh- men class. During halftime, the Senior class was awarded $50 from Student Council for hav- ing the best decorated car. car. After the exciting win over Eastern, every one went to celebrate at the Homecoming dance. During the dance, a song was dedi- cated in honor of the Queen and her court. It was the perfect ending to what had been a wonderful and memorable evening. Top: Homecoming Court: Row 1: D. Foreman, K. Rebert, M. Caler. A. Hunt- zinger, M. Bortner; Row 2: J. Vockroth, A. Each one graced the stage with her feminine charm and apparel. Everyone was on the edge of his seat with the daredevil tricycle tricks of Henrietta honycomb (Bob Rice). Tanya Tucker Twiggy of Texas (Steve Wisner) showed off his lasso tricks with the greatest of ease. Bobby Jo Marley (Doug Beckner) gave the audience her sizzling version of Teel Like Making Love, and Lulu Lovebottom (Mark Hoffman) belted out Janis Joplin's Me and Bobby McGee. The talent continued when Florence Flamingale (John Snyder) taunted the audience with her female body- building. Mary Had a Little Lamb was played on the piano by Sleezy Psychedelic Susie (Mark Troyer), and Jes- sica (Corey) Hahn struck some provocative Playboy poses. Our runner-up. Miss Sally Swanson Burger (Shawn Marchio), sang her heart-stirring rendition of The Flint- stones theme song, but it was Miss Legs Lovebomb (Todd Klinedinst) who won the judges over with her exotic hulahoop dancing. Ms. Lovebomb was crowned Miss Nor- nir 1987. Thanks to our judges, Mr. Little, Mr. Bowe, and Mrs. Zatkos, for their expertise and astute insights. Marci Ful- ton, Marty Wheeler, and Jason Menges emceed the program. Bonfire Finally Gets Lit . . . Again The traditional bonfire finally was lighted on October 22, 1987, prior to the game with York Catholic. Although usually held before the South Western game, this year's bonfire was rained out on this scheduled date. Arsonists attempted twice to set it afire. The first attempt was doused by the fire compa- nyjust prior to the rescheduled bonfire. The second time the fire company allowed the fire to bum out. Within twenty-four hours, students had gathered enough wood to build another bonfire for the game with York Catholic. 16 lew Look Sparks Band To Championship The Hanover Marching Band had a magnificent 1987-88 season. Their show consisted of four songs - The Hopak, The Story of My Life, Children of Sancheq, and Echano. The band performed under the direction of Mr. Galen Lietzel and drum majors Tanya Baker and Carrie Davis. In their first competition at East Pennsboro High School, they came in first place with a score of 66.95. The Hawks also received trophies in best music, best marching and maneu- vering, and best band front. This was a major achievement for the start of the season. In Lewistown they went on to score a 65.5, coming in first place once again. The band's next competition was special, for it was the first time to show off their new uniforms. At this performance in Morgantown, West Virginia, the band came in second with a score of 79.75, disappointedly missing first place by one-tenth of a point. The next weekend was to be the highlight of the fall after working hard all season. The Mighthawk Band made their performance of the year at the Tournament of Bands Chapter VI Championships in Westminster, Maryland. The hard work paid off, and Hanover became the Chapter VI Group 2 Cham- pions with a score of 80.05. This won the Hawks a spot in the Atlantic Coast Championships in Ben Salem, Pennsylvania. Unfortunately the band came in thirteenth place. In May the Nighthawks traveled to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for their Spring Trip. Top: BRASS: Row 1: A. Shriner, P. Thomas, D. foreman. Row 2: A. Theatre In The Round Hits HHS This year the all-school play broke away from a normal- stage format and experimented with something new. Egad, The Woman in White was performed as ' theatre in the round'' with the audience, as well as the cast, entirely on stage. Egad was a traditional slapstick comedy with a suspense- ful plot of deception, murder, and intrique. The combination of one-liners with a creative story line made the play very fast moving and exciting to watch. A choral ensemble, who sang period songs as a prelude to the production, also sat in the audience to promote participation by jeering and cheering at the cast. Many thanks to Mr. Jim Watson, our director, for his inno- vation and creativity. His direction and support made it pos- sible for this year's production to be a great learning experi- ence for all who participated. They have clinched the York County Championship for the third con- secutive year. These 15 girls surely can hold their heads up with pride! Not only do they look great on court, but they also know how to play tennis and win with dignity. Believe it or not, this team did more than earn a champion- ship; they also secured themselves a place in HHS's record book. They had a winning streak of 34 victories, the best streak ever at our high school. This streak consists of many nervewracking, close matches, but the Hawkettes always dug deep and found the strength to come out on top. The team consisted of fifteen dedicated players, only three of which were seniors. These senior players - Jessie Bie- secker, Lori Patterson, and Colleen Bahl - will be greatly missed. They provided leadership and spirit throughout the year. But with the remaining talent, next year should be just as great. The winning atmosphere that has been created on those Hanover courts has just begun and is not about to be forgotten. Right: Second Seed, Lori Patterson. TEMNIS TEAM: Row 1: B. Ehrhart, J. The 8-7 season was a growing experience for the rather short team. With only two returning starters from last year and little height, the hawkettes had to work hard for their victories. The starting lineup was Jill Martlaub, Tonya Helt- zel, Robyn Leppo, Jenny Staub, LeAnne Jones, and Kerry Baumgardner with Michelle Rebert, Karen Chronister, Kel- ly Shaffer, and Kelly Wisensale as substitutes. They were rearranged many times, allowing those girls who were working and improving to earn greater playing time. The win over South Western and a tough 3-game match against Susquehannock were memorable for the team, but District competition will probably be the fondest memory. The hawkettes captured the silver medal again, but the best part of the competition was the defeat of Delone! Tor the team, which consisted mainly of Seniors, the desire to send Delone home was more important than anything else. That final win made the whole season worthwhile. The team was 11 men and 2 women strong, with underclassmen dominat- ing most of the varsity spots. Even though there weren't as many wins as they had hoped for, every- one used the season to build their own game: wheth- er it be dropping a couple strokes off an average, perfecting a tee shot, or chipping more accurately. Greg Smith 'and Betsy Spooner went to the County Qualifing Round, and Betsy went on to the Girls Dis- trict Tournament. A lot of time was spent on practice and matches, but everyone had a good time. Hawkette Hockey Team Ends Season With A 8-6-1 Record Once again the hawkette Hockey Team, led by seniors Missy Beabout, Jody Hockensmith, and Steph Hadley, finished off their season with an impressive 8-6-1 record. Before each game the team would say, Together we can, together we will. This togetherness proved to be their best asset. As usual, the team was very small; but what they lacked in numbers, they made up with determination and aggressiveness. The Hawkettes defeat- ed York Christian School in District Playoffs. They advanced to Districts but ended up losing their last game to Garden Spot. The leading scorers were Jody Hockensmith (6 goals), Jenni Menges (6 goals), Carrie Amdt (6 goals), and April Wentz (2 goals). The goalie, Alec King, had a total of 137 saves for the year. Although the backfielders weren't mentioned in the newspaper for scoring goals, they must be recognized as an essential part of the team. Furthermore, the 1987 Hockey Team would like to wish Good Luck to the hockey team of 1988 and all the teams in the future. Top: Coach Johnson confers with a player. We start- ed the year stumbling through the many cor- ridors of the high School lost in a new world. Gradually as we participated in the numerous activities, new friends were made and more doors were opened. We demonstrated athlet- ic ability in football, basketball, volleyball, tennis, track, and wrestling; and we displayed our drama gifts in Egad the Woman in White and Drama Might. We exhibited our musical talents in the Hanover high School band and Grease. A multitude of fans cheered us on and watched in awe as we showed off all of our expertise. There was exhilaration in all of these events, and we are proud of all of its participants. We matured and grew, making this year's freshman class accepted into the High School I know that we ll continue the development and participation. We shall continue to grow and mature. Newcome, Principal As each school year draws to its conclusion, the yearbook staff pre- pares the nomir for publication. The book before you now is not only a record of school personalities and of events which occurred during the 1987-88 school year, but also a printed memory of a formative stage of your life. While all subscribers possess a copy of the 1988 Homir, each of you will have your personal, intimate memories which will again come alive for you whenever you take this treasured keepsake from your bookshelf. There are many past volumes of the rtornir in the school library; there will be many more in the future. Those who came before you had the same feeling when they first opened their yearbook as you have now; those who come after you will share that sensation with their predeces- sors. As one surveys the collection of Homirs, one senses the history and the traditions of Hanover High School. Upon opening these publications, one notes how the faces and the fashions have changed, how the facilities and the educational offerings have become updated, and how you—the students—have remained the focus of the school's existence. Hanover High School has been committed since its inception to provid- ing a quality education for each individual who matriculates through our classrooms. It has provided for the whole ' learning experience: aca- demics, activities, athletics. And it has emphasized the learning process as well as the attainment of knowledge and skills. However, while the school has provided you with the guidance, the resources, and the cli- mate to assume your position in our society, it has also charged you with the responsibility of achieving to the best of your abilities. As we regret to see the members of the Class of 1988 leave our school to enter the job market, to serve in the Armed Forces, or to further their formal education, we take pride in their accomplishments and wish them continued success in their endeavors. They have earned the right to become part of Hanover High School's rich history. E. Frederick Brossman, Acting Principal Mr. E. Grease Packs House On March 18 and 19, the Hanover High School stage rocked to the sound of the 50 s. The musical Grease was a big success, once again directed by Ron and Roxonne Schloyer. The musical featured the life of a group of teen- agers at Rydell High in the late 1950's, their heartthrobs and heartbreaks. When a not-so-great reunion of Sandy Dum- browski (Sally Small) and Danny Zuko (Dennis Plitt) takes place, the stage is set for the rest of the show. As the conflict between the two gangs—the Pink Ladies and the Burger Palace Boys— grows, more couples split and are rejoined. Both nights' performances filled the auditorium. Grease pro- vided a delightful evening of laughter and good music. They brought the Christ- mas spirit into everyone's hearts. The or- chestra performed music, such as ’The Sleigh Ride composed by Mozart, Con- certo Qrosoo in D Minor by Vivaldi, White Christmas by Berlin, and the nut- cracker Ballet by the famous Tschai- kovsky. After the Christmas concert the or- chestra concentrated on making their Spring Concert a big success. In fact, their hard work paid off. They played Berceuse and Finale by Stravinsky, The Typewrit- er by Anderson, A Chorus Line by liam- lisch, March to the Sealand by Berlion, and Suite no. I from The Water Music by Q. F. Handel. Baccalaureate was their last performance of the year. The orchestra consisted of 30 members and was under the direction of Mrs. McCandless. Top: Winds And Percussion: Row 1: B. Bixler. C. Davis. M. After the assembly, the chorus started working on their Christ- mas music for their concert in Decem- ber. They sang 'Down Home Deck the Halls, King of Kings ' Wesford Carol, Patapan, and Child of night. They ended the evening by singing the Halle- lujah Chorus by Q. P. Handel. At their next appearance in the spring, the chorus sang songs from musicals. Se- lections included I Dreamed a Dream from Les Aliserabies, songs from Little Shop of horrors, Parmer Jan from Hump Boys and Dinettes, and songs from Three-Henny Opera. They also sang Send in the Clowns. The chorus ended the year by singing at both Bacca- laureate and Campus Might. Top: TENORS AND BASSES: Row 1: B. Mummert. A. Birgensmith. T. Moncrief. M. This sport requires hours of practice, the patience of working together, and lots of spirit. The cheerleaders started the year by sending a number of girls to Millersville for four days of cheerleading camp. The camp proved to be a worthwhile experience for all who participated. It helped to plan for the upcoming pep rallys, dances, and cheers. The bonfire proved to be the biggest challenge. After wood was rained on, stolen, and terrorized by our crosstown rival, Amy Hunt- zinger, captain of the Football Cheerleading Squad, led the HHS stu- dent body in working together to build a new bonfire. It was the first year that students had actively helped the cheerleaders prepare for that event. Captains Melinda Bortner and Sally Small started the wrestling and basketball seasons with a short pep rally to mark the beginning of the winter sport season. They developed new and creative cheers and dances: Tricky, T am being Haunted, and Run Away are examples. The 1987-1988 cheerleading season was a memorable one. Good luck next year and keep those fans screaming! Middle: BASKETBALL CHEER- LEADERS: Row 1: K. Nieves. A. Shriller. S. Small, M. Musselman. Row 2: A. Rohrbaugh. J. Staub; Row 3: P. Kuhn. C. Davis. The 15-9 Hawkettes had a lot of experi- ence with five seniors, four juniors, and one sophomore, playing with only the team-con- cept in mind. The team effort was apparent as the Haw- kettes remained tied for first place through- out the first half of the season. In District Playoffs, the Hawkettes won their first round game before bowing out in the second round. Other highlights included Jody Hockens- mith's and Colleen Bahl's being named to play in the York County All-Star Game. Jody Hockensmith also broke a school record for most steals in a season and tied the record for the best goal percentage in a single game. As we con- tinue to strive for extracurricular excellence, we remember that academics come first. As we begin to realize our dreams of our futures, we learn the difficulties of reaching those dreams. SPRING Drama night Awards Banquet Sports Banquet Baseball Boys' Tennis Track Talent Show Juniors SPRING Junior Play Takes Honors At Drama The Junior Class at Hanover High School dominated the inter-class com- petition at Drama night held Friday, May 6, 1988, in the high school auditorium. The play. The Scheme of the Driftless Shifter, was a madcap melodrama with interruptions from the scrubwoman'' and from the audience-based Lady in Hat, the Man Behind Lady in Hat, and Usher. The three judges awarded it best play, best actress to Michelle Baum, runner-up actress to Christine Keffer, and runner-up actor to Andy Pinda. It was directed by Sally Small, as- sisted by Alec King. After the awards, one of the judges said the play was dif- ficult to do with the different bits going on in the audience, in front of the cur- tain, and on stage. It was handled very well; it was very complex. The freshmen class play. Baby, fea- tured Robbie Corbin in the title role, win- ning his best actor honors— undoubt- edly well deserved since he spent the evening running around in diapers with a red heart on the seat. The play was from Baby's perspective, from prenatal coaching to his first birthday. The senior class play. The Uninvited Ghost, brought Andrew Cookson best director honors and runner-up for best play. Cookson also filled in at the last minute for one of his leading actors, who had developed appendicitis. A Mad Breakfsat, the sophomore class play, brought runner-up director honors to Dennis Plitt. One of the judges re- marked later that the production had an absolutely terrific attention to detail and the actors moved from conversation to conversation very smoothly. Judges were Mari Garrett, Melinda Hig- gins, and Roberta Rooney. by Marguerite Plank 82 Top: JUMIOR CAST: Row 1: B. Bixler, N. Wright, A. King, S. Myers, M. Baum, S. Bowersox Row 2: J. Weaver, J. The Tenth Academic honors Awards Banquet was again a success that will be recorded in HHS history. An amazing seventy-four middle and high school students were honored, thirty-one of which proudly represented our high school. The guest speaker of the evening was Dr. Anthony Ceddia, President of Ship- pensburg University. He spoke on the importance of using one's best efforts to benefiting society instead of trying to find ways to benefit one's self. Following Dr. Ceddia's speech, Mr. C. Fred Shultz was recognized and thanked for his gra- cious donations which paid for the stu- dents' dinners. Mr. E. Frederick Brossman, Acting High School Principal, and Mr. John Connor, High School Administrative As- sistant, distributed the high school awards of a plaque and a jacket to each student. Mr. James O. Little, Middle School Principal, and Mr. Frank McFalls, Middle School Guidance Counselor, pre- sented the middle school awards. Senior Doug Lieb gave a thank you on behalf of all the students. Seventy-Four Students Honored At MIOH SCHOOL ACADEMIC HOMORS STUDENTS: Row 1: J. Biesecker. J. Strock. K. Herring. A. Baker. M. Small numbers Hurt Hawks The 1988 baseball team experienced a lot of hardships with having only ten players and at times the minimum of nine. The team headed by seniors Tom Cerifko and Mitch Lehigh was able to go 2-1 in non-league play, but things went downhill from there. The inexperience and shortage of players began to show when league play began. The team was able to play close games against Dover, York High, and the league champions. Spring Grove. The highlights of the season included Kevin Trish's two pitching victories against New Oxford and Bermudian Springs. Mitch Lehigh was able to rap out four hits against Bermudian Springs in route to batting .400 for the season. Top Left: Reuel Zlnn rounds the bases on a teammate's hit. Although they won four and lost six games in the York County League, the team won three close matches against non-league teams to finish with an overall record of 7-6. In one of the non-league matches, Hanover beat Littlestown, the Blue Mountain League Champions, in a close 4-3 cliffhanger. At the beginning of the season, the team won its first four games but then fell into a five-game losing streak. At the end of the season, Hanover won three of its last four games. Hanover will return four of the starting five positions, losing only one senior on the team, Dave Luckenbaugh. Being more experienced, the team hopes to have a good season next year. Top: Third seed. The girls' record was 2-4, but the Hawkettes were in each meet until the final events. School records were set by Jody hockensmith in the jave- lin, Alec King in the 400-meter run, and Amy Troyer in the 3200 run. The spring relay teams won two medals at both the Sonny Sheppherd and York Suburban relays, and the dis- tance relay teams each earned one medal at both relays. The triple-jump team of Lisa Ziegler and Christine Keffer also placed sixth at Suburban. At the County Championships, Alex King had the best performance, placing sixth in the 400, while at the District Championships, she placed seventh in the 400, and Lisa Ziegler placed ninth in triple jump. Other participants at Districts were Jenni Staub and Amy Troyer. The characteristic of this year's team was depth, and although the seniors will be missed, next year should be the best ever with the return of 14 juniors and many talent- ed underclassmen. This past season was one of improvement for the boys' track team as well. This year's record was raised to 3-4 with the help of dedicated athletes. This year's team sent eight members to the YCIAA meet at South Western. From there five members went on to the District III meet where Matt Wallen took a first place with a shot putt toss of over fifty feet. This accomplishment al- lowed Matt to advance to States, where he placed sixth. In two of the regular-season matches, the win came down to the last event, the 1600-meter relay. At Eastern, the relay team of Johnson, Wisner, Troyer, and T. Miller, won the race, and Hanover won the match. Later in the year at northeastern, the relay team of Johnson, Wisner, Wise, and T. Miller was edged out by less than a tenth of a second, thus losing the match. With a large number of returning underclassmen, next year's team should be better yet. 9 £ Girls' Track Hanover Opponent f 60 South Western 81 ( () York Catholic 81 31 1 Eastern 90 jl Kennard Dale 58 66 Susquehannock 75 84 northeastern 56 fcf . It was definitely an enjoyable show for both the participants and the audience. Shawn Marchio and John Snyder did an interesting job of hosting the event. Each act demonstrated some type of talent. We started off as freshmen, not knowing what was going to become of us at HMS, and now we are almost through our high school years. It seems like only yester- day when we entered those big doors for the first time. We were all frightened and very shy. How, we are confident and determined to leave our mark on Hanover High School. We have participated actively in athletics, aca- demics, drama, music, and student govern- ment. These last three years have helped us find what we truly want for ourselves in the future and have helped us realize our poten- tials. We have had many exciting and memo- rable times as Nighthawks and we are defi- nitely sure there will be many more to follow in our last year at Hanover High. —Beth Kuhn Top: Row 1: J. CooKcrly. L. Judges for the contest this year were Miss Beatrice Myers, a former teacher at HhS; Attorney Carolyn Angelo; and Mr. Jeffrey Warner. There were only two male contestants: Wade Spory, speaking on the topic Racial Discrimination and Prejudice, and Andrew Cookson who spoke on the topic Aids: What do you know? Originally there were nine female contestants, so a run-off contest was held on February 23. From that run-off contest, five female speakers were chosen: Melinda Bortner, speaking on Freedom ; Sarah Bouchard on Ap- athy— A serious problem in our schools ; Karie Griest on Alcohol— A grave mistake ; Ellena Keriazes on The Disappearing Act (school drop- outs); and Lori Patterson on Airway Travel— Is it still safe today? It's hard to recall a year in a couple paragraphs, and there is no way I could express everthing I feel. Another year goes passing by and closing another cur- tain. How we take our final bow. To some this brings a joyous smile, to others a tear because part of our lives remains in this year. But days pass by; and sometime we will recall the memories that seem, right now, too few. After passing one year in America and attending the best school I've ever been to. I'd like to thank all of you for the friendship you gave me and the funny times we had together. When my departure time arrives. I'm sure it will be very hard for me to leave all of you, but I will put my head up and look forward to our first reunion and all the next ones. You will be always a part of me. Thank you again. I don't know where to begin, but two years at Hanover High has given me more joy and knowledge than I ever could have imagined. The experiences that I gained here in the United States will always be in my memory. The world has become smaller since I came here, and I hope that you all will have the same opportunity someday. I'd like to thank all my teachers and all the students that made this school year one of the best in my life. This castle-like setting was per- fect, for the theme was Til the Clock Strikes Twelve. There were coachmen, cinder girls, and fairy godmothers to make the evening special. Decorations in blues, silver, and white included balloons, stars and glass slip- pers. Music was provided by DJ Derek Shaw. Melinda Bortner reigned over the senior class as prom queen. Her court included Fifth Runner-up Jill Hartlaub, Fourth Runner-up Amy Huntzinger, Third Runner-up Jody Hock- ensmith. Second Runner-up Kim Rebert, and First Runner-up Melanie Caler. The Class of 1989 with their advisors, Mrs. Paula Frank and Mr. John Timcheck, worked very hard to make this evening a success. Despite the rainy weather, an enjoyable time was had by all. 1988 PROM QUEEM AMD HER COURT: Row 1: C. Beckner. J. Hartlaub. J. Menges, J. Hockensmith, M. Hoffman, M. Caler. D. Pratt, K. Rebert, W. If you were fortunate enough to be the guest of a senior or if you worked at the prom as a junior, you certainly can attest to the success of the 1987 Prom 'Arabian nights. The junior class worked for months preparing for the gala event. Once the hurtle was passed in February, which involved getting not only the student body to agree to taking the prom out of the building but also the school board, plans could finally be made. After the class advi- sors and officers visited Martin's in Westminster, the prom began to take shape. On the day of the prom some twenty students traveled to Westminster early in the morning. After finally getting the throne tent to stand because of pipe cutting miscalcu- lations, trying to hang a mural that didn't fit the wall, and designing a beaded entrance that Mrs. Reck and Mrs. Miller insisted wouldn't work, the juniors could finally step back to admire their handiwork. Exotic centerpieces ac- cented each table, along with beautiful name cards and scrolls for souvenirs. Martin's beautiful chandelier and gold mirrored interior was the perfect setting for the “harem hostesses and Arabian valets and guards. The '87 Prom was truly a successful tribute to the senior class from the juniors. Remember The Arabian nights? PATRONS AND ADVERTISEMENTS PROFESSIONAL PATRONS Harold J. CALL NORTH HANOVER MALL As editor of the nomir. I d like to recognize and thank some of those people who made the 1988 Hornira success. My thanks to Hanover Studio of Photography and Mr. Musser s photography club for the large variety of pictures we were given this year. The Yom r staff is a very dedicated group of people. Some spent many extra hours after school and in the evenings working to meet deadlines. I really appreciate all the cooperation that the Yom rstaff has received from the administration, faculty and photographers in helping us get the yearbook put together. Special thanks go to Debbie Hicks and Kathy Gouker for their reliability and for all the time they spent in making the 1988 nomir a success. My sincerest appreciation goes to our advisors, Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Reck, for all their patience and help in produc- ing a fantastic yearbook. The 1988 nomir will be a memento that will always be remembered in the years to come. The Class of 88 can be proud to have a yearbook of such quality. Sincerely, Kimberly A. Shoemaker Editor, 1988 nomir iw These Times The times we've cried. The times we've cared. These are the times That we've all shared. Through all our pains. Through all our tears. Through all our joys. We've shared these years. We all have laughed; We all have cried; But no matter what. We were side by side. We are a class Unique in every way. So let's not forget this time— Our Graduation Day. A time for us to be Together for one last time. And as our class song says: ‘This is the time. The time to remember All that we've been through. And one thing is for sure. I'll never forget you. — Kareema driest, class of 1968 160
