FACULTY 16 FRESHMEN 26 SOPHOMORES 34 JUNIORS 42 ACTIVITIES 50 SPORTS 90 SENIORS 128 ADVERTISING AND DIRECTORY 150 V AS THE DAYS GO BY WITH In ten years, when we each look back on our high school days, we will all remember different things. Some of us will remember our first school play. Some of us will remember that vital sporting event against a cross-town rival. Others will remember a special friend who made our years at HHS the best of our lives. There are so many aspects of school life that it is hard to pinpoint the single-most important one. We have symbols to remind us of our school and what it stands for. Two of these symbols, emphasized on the cover and first page of our book, are the Nighthawk and the Alma Mater. The hawk is a symbol of strength and power. The student body has exempli- fied this strength and power by sticking together as a team on the sports field, the stage, and in the classroom. A sense of unity prevails. As we sing the Alma Mater, the source of this unity is brought to light. We are singing to our school ■ a place where we are together. Yet, even when the time comes when we can no longer be together, the song and the hawk still serve a purpose. This purpose is to make us remember the days when we were together and to assure us that in some ways we always will be. 2 SWIFTNESS THAT FORM THE PASSING 5 TO OUR DEAR OLD ALMA 6 MATER, WE RAISE OUR SONGS The week of October 7th was a busy week at HHS. This Pride Week featured assemblies, night activities, and exciting sports events. The fun started on Monday with “Nerd Day”. On Tuesday, the student body “swam” in their clothes on “Oversize Day. The school day ended with a bang when the girls’ tennis team defeated Southwestern to capture the York County League title. Later, at the annual field hockey game held under the lights, the field hockey team defeated Dallastown. The theme on Wednesday was “Teacher Casual Student Dress Day.” At an assembly held later on Wednesday the students played the teachers in a volleyball game. The teachers won against the juniors. On Thursday, there was an open gym from 6:45-8:00, the theme of “Farmer Day,” and the traditional bonfire at 8:00 on the athletic field - all leading up to the big football game against Southwestern. On Friday, the excitement grew with “Orange and Black Day” and a Pep Rally in the gym. The perfect ending of this exciting week would have been a win for the football team. Although the Nighthawks were outsized and outnum- bered, they fought a good fight and walked proud. Michelle Moxley Kathy Shaffer Kelly Sherwood J. Davis. S Knaub, K. Shaffer. A. James. K Sherwood. I say “our” education because that is what the school year is for all of us. For me, for example, this was a year filled with new experience — learning experi- ence—ones I tried to share with you. Remember “To- day is the birthday of the Statue of Liberty,” and “To- morrow is December 7th,” and “Tomorrow we celebrate the dying of the sun as we celebrate the winter solstice”? I tried to share experience through those messages — even if the front two rows of seniors weren’t listening all the time. Though the school year started out in a somewhat confused manner, we quickly took sight of where we had to go and rapidly maneuvered ourselves into the current that would take us there. I looked to as many people as I could for guidance and direction; many of those people were students, without whom we would have “run aground” first semester. Despite the “newness” of the experiences each of us had this year, there was something refreshingly common to them as well. We have all been in school most of our lives; therein lies the commonality of the experiences we had —most of them we have had before. Each of those experiences was new, however, if for no other reason than each was being experienced for the last time. We met each of those experiences and grew from each of them; we are different — and, hopefully, better persons because of them. I know 1 am. Mr. Gregg Boehne DR. FRESHMEN Dear Class of 1989, Freshman year: a new beginning and a frightening one for those of us who had to face it in the fall of ’85. We discovered we could achieve and fit in with new people in a new school. We took active parts in athletics and school productions, and we cheered our teams to victory. The year has been rewarding and has helped us set goals for future years. This year has been fun as well as educational. We experienced new events, such as Homecoming and Sadie Hawkins. The homecoming prin- cess was Sonya Peretti and the Sadie Hawkins prince, James Corbin. In the freshman sports program, the football team came in second place in York County while the boy’s basketball team came in fifth place. I’m sure the fun and excitement will follow us as we go on to different grade levels and we are definitly ready for it! Instead, the class of ’88 entered the Hanover High School with familiar- ity and a renewed sense of pride. We proved our spirit by showing fantastic representation in all school activiites. These ranged from athlet- ics and cheerleading to band and drama. The prom and senior trip, which seemed so far away, are now right around the corner. Our class united to earn money for these projects through such fundraisers as the magazine sale and candy sale. The class of ’88 will continue to grow and mature as we face our last two years as Nighthawks. Thank you for your support! To the Class of 1987 at HHS, class means fun, friends, memories. It means pulling together as one to show our spirit and pride. It means many talented individuals, each unique in his or her own way. Each has his own place to shine, whether it’s out on the playing field, up on the stage, or in the classroom. “Class” means coming together to work and cooperate on projects . . . from something as small as a weekly pretzel sale to something as momentous as a senior prom. We, as juniors, have reached an important year in our high school career. It’s a time to look back with fond memories on our last two years but to also look ahead to our senior year, the true test of whether or not we’ve got what it takes. We’re sure we do, though, because over the years we’ve gained not only maturity but confidence, too. According to Mr. Webster, “class” also means “superior quality, style.” And we, the juniors, are truly a class with “class.” Kathy Lawrence Class President Top: Row 1: Ellie Hoover, treasurer; Kathy Law- rence, president; Row 2: Amy James, secretary; Courtney Smith, vice-president. The participants were as follows: Chris Mumma as Cleona Jo Plisken, Jason Horan as Daisy Lou Memminshire, Jared Eisenhart as Jezabel Clampett, Todd Funke as Myrtle Mae Mon- kaboob, Dave Troyer as Mabel Monkaboob, and, the winner, Jim Goodfeilow as Murray Madonna. Through their extreme grace and charm, the contes- tants really presented the judges. Miss Johnson, Mr. Bowe, and Miss Crouse, with some stiff competition. The masters of ceremony were Jessica Blettner and Bill Reichart, and the technical crew was headed by Lynn Bixler. 52 Opposite Page: Top Right: Murray (Jim Goodfellow) Ma- donna. Student Council sponsored some of the most exciting dances ever held at HHS. It also conducted a pro- gram to try to end teenage smok- ing. This year was the first year for a Student Council homeroom and a Student Council scrapbook. In the spring the Council spon- sored a fund raiser which provided money for the Student Council Scholarship. The Council has proved to be an enthusiastic group concerned about the moral and well-being of the school. 1 would like to thank the council members and the student body for a great year. My thanks to Miller Photo and the student photographers for the wide variety of pic- tures we were given this year. Also, thanks are due to our artists Jill Wentz and Derek Arnold. The Nornir staff is a very dedicated group of people. Some spent many extra hours at night to meet deadlines and volunteered their time to sell ads. Special thanks go to Lynn Bixler for her reliability and to Teena Buhr and Kelly DeVivio for typing the Senior Direc- tory. Last, my sincerest appreciation goes to our advisors, Mrs. Reck and Mrs. Miller. Despite all the problems and hard work, now that I’ve seen the finished product, I know that it was all worth it. The marching band is composed of over 20 percent of the student body. The highlight of the season was the competition in Harrisonburg, Virginia, where the “Hawk Band” took first place honors with a score of 81.1, their highest of the season. The concert band performed in the Spring Concert for all the public to enjoy. Some of the songs performed included R. Vaughan William’s “Folk Song Suite” and “Prelude and Fugue in B Minor” by J. S. Bach. The concert also included a performance by the Jazz Band. “Come in from the Rain” by Melissa Manchester Carole Bayer Sager and Henry Mancini’s “Days of Wine and Roses” were just two of the songs present- ed. The Jazz Band also represented Hano- ver High School at the Bermudian Springs Jazz Festival on April 5. They also hosted their Second Annual Jazz Band Festival, which featured the Hanover Area Studio Jazz Orchestra composed of students and adults from the Hanover and South Western community. To be selected to partici- pate in a District Festival, the participants must prepare scales and a solo which is selected by a committee for each voice or instrument. This year Jim Hershey, singing bass, participated in the District Chorus Festival, January 30, Febru- ary 1 2, held at Annville-Cleona High School. The second district event was District Orches- tra held at Millersville University. Kathy Sherry played viola at the festival held January 9, 10, 11. The last festival was District Band held at Northeastern High School on February 13, 14, 15. Amy Stauffer played bass clarinet and Lynn Bixler played tenor saxophone. The festi- vals all include a day and a half of practicing and two public concerts. The students were housed by host parents and ate some meals in the host school’s cafeteria, allowing time to meet a lot of new people. Overall the experi- ence was rewarding, but it was also a lot of work. Top Left: Kathy Sherry. District Orchestra. Top Right: Jim Hershey. District Chorus. They performed three numbers along with a song for strings only. Next a few members of the orches- tra worked with Miss O’Brien to put together the music for the Pit Orchestra who did a great job for the musical “Ernest in Love’’! Then the orchestra performed in the Spring Concet producing three outstanding numbers, including “Hungarian Dance No. 1“ by Johannes Brahms and Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 1”. Finally the orchestra finished out the year’s activities at Baccalaureate. Top: Upper Strings: Row 1: T. Gieman. J. Corbin. K Keffer; Row 2: M Wierman, E. Hoover. S. Small. J Biesecker, Row 3: D. While trying to find the doomsday machine that Dr. Fassbender (Lenny Hockensmith) has created, Clouseau falls in love with his foe Olga Berriosiva (Corkie Smith). Dreyfus (Jim Hershey) repeatedly at- tempts to be rid of his enemy Clouseau. The assassins make hilarious attempts on Clouseau’s life. The play was directed by Mrs. Jennie Tome and student director Kathy Lawrence. The two performances were November 15 16. The cast included approximately 50 stu- dents. The play was a huge success. The name of this musical was Ernest in Love. Based on Oscar Wilde’s play, The Importance of Being Ernest, the play was a farce based on social customs of the British upper class. Al- though the musical was not well-known, those in attendance agreed that the 17 cast mem- bers and directors Ron and Roxanne Schloyer put forth a both enjoy- able and memorable performance. The cast included Row 1: J. Sterner, D. Arnold, T. Heltzel, S. Bouchard; Row 2: J. Davis, S. Small, A. Cookson, L. Hockensmith, E. Roth, J. Blettner, F. Young, A. Stauffer, N. Smith, J. Hershey, M. Each class put on a performance to be proud of. and each class came away with at least one award. The sophomore class play took to the stage first with The Brief Debut of Tildy, and Mindy Bortner received the runner-up best director award. Next, the freshman play. Wilbur Takes His Medicine. saw James Corbin take the award for best actor. After a brief intermission, the juniors took their turn with the play, It’s Bigfoot.” Their fine performance gave them the best play; best director. Kathy Lawrence; and runner-up best ac- tress. Julie Orendorff. Last, but certainly not least, came the seniors and their drama. The Legacy. which was awarded runner-up best play; best ac- tress. Jill Sterner; and runner-up best actor, Jim Hershey. All in all, it was an evening of both belie- vable and entertaining theater and an enjoyable experience for all who participated and attended. There were various acts including both lip-sync and actual singing acts. One of the singing acts, sophomore Karie Griest, took second place with a song she composed herself. Third place honors went to the memorable Hanover Wrestling Federation, which involved about a dozen of Hano- ver’s most brutal men in a tag-team extravaganza. “Gorgeous Greg’’ Albrecht even got into the act as an announcer. The quite accurate and entertaining act of the afternoon, however, was senior Georgianna Trish and her baton routine which included many advanced gymnastics stunts as well. Also included were our talented masters of ceremony Kathy Shaffer, Bill Reichart, and Suzi Knaub. -PROM: EVENING IN PARIS On the evening of the seventeenth of May, 1986, Hanover High School celebrat- ed its Senior Prom. With much creativity and diligence, the Junior class created “An Eve- ning in Paris” for the Seniors. Musical enter- tainment was provided by “Native Son.” Kathy Lawrence, Junior Class President, toasted the Senior Class. Michelle Moxley was crowned Prom Queen. Other members of the Court were Wendy Peters, Tami Orewiler, Julie Brown, Stacy Houck, and Kelley Sherwood. Following these two events, “Never Surrender”, the class song, was performed by Jill Sterner and Jesssica Blettner. As a result of much effort, a fun- filled evening was provided for all. 1986 Prom Court: Clockwise: W Peters and C Mumma. S. Houck and C. Hahn, M Moxley and J. Horan. J. Brown and S. Stam baugh. T. Some of these dreams were shattered; others miraculous- ly came true. The seniors of the 1985 squad had dreamed of a win- ning season since their high school careers had begun nearly four years ago. The dream had yet to come true, and it seemed as if still another year would pass without its realization. With two disappointing losses to Delone and Spring Grove under their belts, the Nighthawks came away with a surprising 21-21 tie with AAA power Manheim Central. Following this were wins against West York and Vo-Tech, but our dream of a sectional title was shat- tered with a 40-8 loss to South Western. The Nighthawks, howev- er, bounced back and clinched a district berth even before their last game against Littlestown. In districts, the Hawks registered two nail-biting wins over Columbia and Camp Hill and went on to win the District III Class A title. Even though the dreams of defeating ri- ved teams and of winning a City Cup and a Sectional title were shat- tered, on a November afternoon in Boiling Springs when the gold med- als were placed around their necks, forty-two young men realized that their most important dream had come true. Even now, they are still standing proud. Coaches: John Connor, Len Zate- veski, Don Coffman, Larry Bowe, Dave Reese, Mark Straub. Top: Row 1: D. Troyer, J. Eisenhart, T. Moose, J. Horan, C. FOOTBALL - 93 The 1985 field hockey team, led by seniors Kathy Shaffer, Julie Da- vis, Michelle Moxley, Carol Sle- zosky, and Kim Gentzler, finished another spectacular season with a 7-2-3 record. After starting off their season with a 10-0 win over West York, the girls rallied to end their season with a fourth place tie with Kennard-Dale which put the Haw- kettes close to District play. After losing to Kennard-Dale during the regular season, the Hawkettes came up short due to a new rule that states that if there is a tie in points, the winner of the two during the regular season advances to Dis- trict play. Although the Hawkettes were so unfortunate, they still out- scored their opponents by an in- credible 35-9 margin. This wide margin was due to their high-scor- ing offense and unbeatable defense. Michelle Moxley led the team in scoring with 12 goals. She was fol- lowed by Greta Rohrbaugh and Kathy Shaffer, who each had 8; Jody Hockensmith with 2; and Julie Davis with 2. Jenny Brill also had 2 and Ellie Hoover had one. Congrat- ulations to the Hawkettes for a well-played season and good luck to the remaining Hawkettes who will represent Hanover in the 1986 season! That re- cord tied Central for first place in the Western Division. Central was the eventual York County League champion, after beating the Haw- kettes in a playoff match and Red Lion in the championship. The sea- son had many memorable mo- ments, but the Spring Grove and South Western matches stand out the most. Sophomore Colleen Bahl tied the previous service points re- cord. Junior Jenny Fuhrman broke the same record. Cathy Wolfe was selected by the coaches as a York Dispatch All Star, and Fuhrman, Bahl, and Julie Gerken were cho- sen honorable mention. Wolfe and Suzi Knaub were chosen to com- pete in a post-season All-Star Tour- nament against other All-Star teams from all over the state. We would like to congratulate the Haw- kettes for a very well-played season and wish you the best of luck for next year’s season! VOLLEYBALL - JV Team: Row 1: M Rebert, W Beckner, K. The Hawkette tennis team, under the leadership of Coach Dan Palm- er, finished the year with an excep- tional record. Not only did the girls capture the first YCIAA York County Championship for girls’ ten- nis, but they accomplished this feat with an undefeated record. No op- posing team was able to dominate the mighty Hawkettes in any way. This “dream season’ ended in a finale with a dramatic win over cross-town rivals, Southwestern High School. Although the champi- onship team is losing their two top players, seniors Karen Keffer and Molly Wierman, next year will hopefully be just as great. Several talented players will be returning next fall to rebuild another winning year. Top: Row 1: K. Keffer. R Kuhn. E. Ker iazes. C. Keffer. B Kuhn; Row 2: J. Bie- seeker. M. Wierman. Bottom Left: Christine Keffer, third seed. Bottom Right: Lori Paterson, fifth seed. It was not a great year as far as records were concerned for the Hawk golf team, but it was an en- joyable year. Under Coach Tom Sager, our record was 1-8-1, but the one win came against crosstown rival Southwest, when Damion Spahr made a 40-foot putt on the last hole to win his match and give the team a victory. The one tie was against West York, who at the time was in first place. The Hawks will lose three se- niors to graduation: Derek Arnold, Mark Hershey, and Bryan Helwig. Bryan has made the second round of Districts for the past two years, and compiled a record of 18-1-1 over the same period of time. Dar- rell Groft, Kirby Orewiler, Damion Spahr, and Derek Arnold were the second through fifth players, re- spectively, with Steve Shaffer also seeing some action. Top: Mr. Groft. D. Spahr, K. They received 12 spe- cialized award ribbons and placed second in the Grand Champions Competition. As they do every year, the varsity basketball and the varsity wrestling squads each made up a dance. Each squad was very entertaining to watch and full of pep. The 9th grade basketball cheer- leaders tried something new this year. They cheered for Varsity Girls’ Basketball in addition to their normal boys’ season. Hopefully, in years to come, the tradition of producing the maxi- mum spirit of Hanover High will be carried out by great cheerleaders such as there were this year. 102 ------------CHEERLEADING - Top: Basketball Cheerleaders: K. The Nighthawk basketball team may have been short on height, but they made up for it with desire. The season did not get off to a great start with a last second loss against Delone; but considering that in the last two seasons the Hawks lost to Delone by more than twenty points, it wasn’t bad. Things picked up af- ter the blowout at Kennard-Dale, but in the next game something happened that changed the outlook for the remainder of the season. In a close game with Red Lion, Scott Feeser separated his shoulder which put him out for the remain- der of the season. This was one of the many injuries the Hawks would face, but they still fought their way through every game of the twenty- three game schedule. On more than one occasion the Hawks fought back from twenty-point deficits to scare their opponents and to show them the Hawks never give up. Hanover coach Dave Reese does have something to look forward to next year as there are only five se- niors graduating this year • Jon Duds, Dave Frock, Eric Groft, Scott Feeser, and Bryan Helwig. Al- though these seniors will be missed, the future Hanover teams look promising. VARSITY Row 1: S Wisner. S Shaffer. J Dubs. B Hel wig. K Orewiler, Row 2: D Gruver. D Frock. D. Groft. J.P. Ellison. The Hawkettes had an outstanding team attitude which meant they were willing to sacrifice individual glory for team success. In doing so they established a new record for most wins in a season at 23, won the Y.C.I.A.A. Western Division Championship, finished third in the P.I.A.A. The varsity finished 12-4, while the JV‘s had a season record of 11-1. A few of the year’s highlights included a decisive victory over Delone, a suspenseful match at South Western which ended in a loss for the Hawks by one point, and the advancement of Mike Miller and Pat Kline- dinst to states where Pat placed fifth. Overall it was a demanding but enjoyable season for both the wrestlers and Coaches Conover and Albrecht. 109 The freshmen have participated in all areas of athletic competition. Where there was no Falcon team, they joined in JV and varsity events. The Falcon football team under Coaches Busbey and Zumbrum finished with a 41-1 season. The turn- about came when the Falcons beat South Western 12-0 in the rain. The Falcon wrestlers had a winless season but gathered experience under coaches Kuhn and Watson. Robbie Corbin, a seventh grader, had an undefeated season. Under the direction of Coach Timcheck, The Falcon basketball team ended with a 7-8 season. Tom Miller, Neil Johnson, and Matt Wallen were the leading scorers. The Lady Falcons with Coach Bowe finished with a good season of 9-7. The girls were able to upset Spring Grove 25-37. High scorers were Jodi Craley and Kelly Wisensale. There were three cheerleading squads: wres- tling, basketball, and football. The winter squads also cheered for the varsity girls’ basketball team. CLASS ADVISORS: Opposite page, top left: Mr. Gregg Boehne, Miss JoAnne Johnson. CLASS COLORS: peach and cream CLASS FLOWER: peach rose CLASS SONG: “Never Surrender” CLASS MOTTO: “Yesterday is not ours to recover, but tomorrow is ours to win or lose.” The class of 1986 - our story had been far from picture-perfect. We have not been a traditional class of growing enthusiasm and consisten- cy, but a class of ongoing transformation. Through our four years of high school, we have changed right along with our school district, our community, our nation, and our world. The changes, however slow, have been very apparent; and now, just as the butterfly emerges from its cocoon, we have finally emerged and become the proud seniors that we have waited to be. Through our freshmen and sophomore years, we began to emerge from our cocoon and to activate school spirit and to make the contribu- tions that everyone knew we were capable of. Then, in our junior year, our wings began to unfold as we pulled together and developed an understanding of each other through the prom, “Puttin’ on the Ritz.” Every idea and thought that was put forth tightened the ties that bound us; and by the end of our junior year, we had begun to think as one. When our senior year arrived, indeed, we thought of ourselves as one class rather than one hundred and forty individuals. We proved our- selves by bringing home sports championships, participating actively in extracurricular events, and possessing general school spirit; but still, we are unable to fly. Now, instead of looking forward to our senior year, we find ourselves looking at the vastness of our future. We realize now that our wings have not even begun to unfold because the most important changes in our lives have yet to take place. As we all go forth into the world, let us make our choices wisely, adapt to the changes in our lives, and perpet- uate the satisfaction that we now feel. Hanover High School has taught us many things. Not only were we taught history and English, but we were taught friendship and love. Now, as we all fly away from each other, let us always remember that, in some ways, we can nev$r be parted. I wish you all much success and happiness in life, and may all your dreams come true.
