1984 Nornir Hanover Senior High School Hanover, Pa Eighty Four The 1983-84 school year was filled with many joys and surprises, frowns and sor- rows, but with the mighty Hawk as our guide, we soared. His strength saw us through our pain. He watched over us through the good times. His nest was our nest-the halls of Hanover High School. Our mascot, the Hanover hawk. Is much like those of us at Hanover-strong and mighty, yet graceful and beautiful. 2 Opposite page: Left: Our football team has the spirit. Right: Chip and Ann celebrate an- other Arabian night. As usual, it rained. The pep rally was moved into the auditorium. Luckily, the rain stopped long enough for the fire to be lighted after all. Hanover went on the next day to beat Southwestern 14-13. Homecoming On October 21, 1983, Kim Tomecek was crowned Homecoming Queen by former Queen Vicki Aumen. The Senior Court consisted of Karen Aumen, Kim Aumen, Stacy Kessler, Linda Mummert, and Robin Rohrbaugh. The Junior Princess was Darby Barnhart. The Soph- omore Princess was Suzette Knaub, and the Freshmen Princess was Courtney Smith. After the football game a dance was held in the gymnasium. Queen Kim Tomecek and her escort Neil Toal reigned over the dance. HOMECOMING COURT: L. Mummert, S. Kessler, Karen Aumen. R. Rohrbaugh. K. Tomecelc, Kim Aumen, D. Barnhart. S. Knaub, C. Smith. Stacy Kessler Linda Mummert Karen Aumen Robin Rohrbaugh Kim Aumen The 1983 Nighthawk football season was highlighted by some outstanding victories. One victory the team was very proud of was their 14-13 win over their cross-town rival, the Southwestern Mustangs. The team will remember this game for a long time because it was the first time Hanover had beaten Southwestern since 1980 when they won 35-14. Another of the Hawks’ accomplish- ments was breaking the school record of most team points scored in a single game with a 73-0 victory over Eastern. The previous record was set in 1959 when the Nighthawks beat Gettysburg 65-0. The Nighthawks finished their sea- son with a 3-7-1 record. COACHES: Balchunas. Sorice. Straub. Connor. Zateveakl. The class placed second in the magazine sale and participated in many scholastic acitivlties. Our class has succeeded in taking the first step in developing our aca- demic and athletic abilities. We will do our best to contribute these abilities through our remaining years at HHS. Many thanks are ex- tended to our class advisors, Mrs. Lyter, Mrs. Storm, and Mrs. Hoke. This 1983 season was the first time Hanover ever compet- ed in district play. As the underdog, the Hawkettes came from behind and were victorious in the first two district games, but they were forced to give up the chance by two other top-ranked teams. The girls ended up with a very impressive fourth place in districts. Other highlights of the season consist- ed of two very special victories. South Western and Littlestown. The Hawkettes battled South Western under the lights at Sheppard and Myers Field. It was the first night game in York County's history, and Hanover won. Littles- town. the 1982 state Cham- pions, struggled to keep up with the Hawkettes, but were unsuccessful in their attempts. The Varsity team, led by seniors Beth Beabout, Den- ise D’Amico, Sheri Folk, Jody Kuhn, Julie Sanders, and Beth Slezosky, ended their season with a 6-2-4 regular season record. 1983 FIELD HOCKEY RECORD Opponent Hanover Red Lion 0 1 Dover 2 1 Spring Grove 1 3 Dallaatown 1 1 South Western 0 1 West York 1 2 Susquehannock 0 0 Kennard Dale 1 1 Northeastern I 1 York Suburban 1 5 Eastern 0 4 Central 1 0 District Games West Perry 0 1 Littlestown 0 1 Camp Hill 5 0 Reading Holy Name 1 0 33 OPPOSITE PAGE: Top Left: A well deserved reef. Dear Class of 1984, This year at Hanover has been a new and interesting experience for me, and possibly the most pleasurable part of this experience has been the opportunity I have had to get to know the members of the Class of 1984. I have been continually impressed with all of you. You have consistently demonstrated that you have the ability and desire necessary to be successful in life. Additionally, 1 have found that your best quality has been your enthusiasm. This is evident in the classroom, on the athletic field, and In other school or community activities. While your educational foundation is tremendously important, this ingredient-enthusiasm-will be the extra added dimension so important to your future success. Enthusiasm is the one quality in life which seems to distinguish those who are successful from those who are not. Whatever you undertake-a Job, college, or raising a family-you will have a much better opportunity for success if you approach that undertaking with an enthusiastic and positive attitude. Not only will you perform better, but you will also enjoy what you are doing. When you really love what you are doing, it isn’t work. It is a source of happiness and fulfillment. And that is what I wish for all of you-happiness and fulfillment. Congratulations upon your graduation from Hanover Senior High School. Your class will alwyas be doubly special to me: You are my first graduating class and also Denise’s graduating class. I wish all of you the very best success in your future endeavors. Good luck and may God bless you. Sincerely yours, $ CL-, Dr. Donald D’Amico 65 School Board: Row 1: C. Llngg, E. Pfaff, S. Belmler, J. Helwlg, D. Hoff; Row 2: T. Baker, M. Fiery, J. Wlerman, G. The 1983 84 Boys' Basketball Team accomplished a first at Hanover High School. This year’s squad qualified for the State Tournament for the first time ever. This honor was preceded by a sixth place finish In the District III playoffs. The Hawks, with their scrappy and competitive style of play, had a 11-12 record through the Y.C.I.A.A. regular season. In the State Tournament, the Hawks were matched against teams that had placed first In their respective districts. These teams were often much taller than the Hawks, but It was the Hawks' fast play that got them as far as they did In the State Tournament. As the coach from Palmerton. whom the Hawks beat 88-75. said. “I expected them to be fast, but not that fast.” Individually, senior Brad Chandler led the team In scoring with 14 points per game. Junior Eric Gruver led In rebounding with 10 rebounds per game, and senior Todd Staub led In assists with 5.5 assists per game. Boys' Varsity Basketball Team: Row 1: B. Graf, E. Wolfe, M. Bayslnger. After the regular season, Hanover placed third in district competition. Of the five wrestlers that placed in Districts, two went on to compete in the State Championship at Hershey. These two wrestlers were junior Jeff Brooks and sen ior Andy Storm. Other seniors participating this year were Neal Dut terer, Steve Gerken, Mike Musselman, Chieu Nguyen, and Brad Wilkens. As freshmen, we were entering a strange and sometimes frightening Journey through our years at Hanover High. Nevertheless, we soon became Involved In all aspects of H. H. S.. Including athletics, band, drama, and cheerleading. With the arrival of the next September came the beginning of our sopho more year. By now we had become accustomed to being students of Hanover High. Our activities and school spirit continued to Increase until we quickly found that our Junior year had arrived. As Juniors, the class of '84 continued to show Its spirit In all areas of student activities. Following months of preparation. May of '83 brought the aenlor prom. Enchanted Forest. After three quick years, the class of ’84 had arrived. We found ourselves as seniors, and quickly accepted the task of being leaders of H. H. S.l The spirited seniors upheld the tradition of being active In all aspects of school life. As we rapidly progressed, through our final year at H. H. S.. we realized that we were participating In our school activities for the last time. From now on our years at Hanover High will simply be a memory, but undoubtedly a happy one. Although we are bound In different paths, we will always share the memo- ries and friendships that we have made In our years at H. H. $. For now. though, we are ready to enter a new phase In our life, to make new friends, to experience new events, and to enter the future with fond memories of our fellow members of the class of ’84. Perhaps the emotions of this time In our lives Is best expressed In the words of Longfellow. “Look not mournfully Into the Past. It comes not back again. Wisely Improve the Present. It Is thine. Go forth to meet the shadowy Future, without Fear, and with a manly heart. Congratulations and good luck for continued success to all members of the class of ’84. First, Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Reck, who were patient in my igno- rance and offered their help countless times; those staff members who gave willingly of their time to meet dead- lines; Mr. Miller and his crew for their fine photographic work; and the busin- esses, patrons, and senior parents who contributed to make this NORNIR pos- sible, you all deserve praise and thanks. To the underclassmen of Hanover High School, I extend my best wishes for an outstanding four years. To the people who make this school tick: administration, faculty, mainten- ance and cafeteria staff, thank you for making me a better person for having been here.
