GRAY Principal MR. JOSEPH E. W1ERMAN Assistant Principal Our memory, so psychologists tell us, recalls the early and last incidents of our lives more readily than it does those occurrences in between. The Class of '66 is my last class. 1 am sure that I shall remember it as long as my memory endures. This very fine yearbook which is a credit to the school, the class, the sponsor, and its staff will be reviewed by me many times in the future with a great deal of pleas- ure as I recall this memorable last year. Mr. Ray W. Gray Principal DR. RICHARD STOTTLEMYER Assistant to Superintendent SECRETARIES—Mrs. Eleanor Smith, Mrs. Virginia Smith. Mrs. Eleanor Dunkinson. In future years when you recall with fondness the events of high school, you will discover that this yearbook is a storehouse of golden memories. I congratulate the staff for an excellent yearbook. The 1966 Nornir staff has worked many long, hard hours to create a year- book that will bring back the exciting memories of our high school days with perhaps a little nostalgia. We hope that our theme, School Spirit, will fully cap- ture the feelings of all the students and live in their hearts for many years to come. And we were wondering how your yearbook was put together. 34 The editorial staff. The photographer takes time to rest after a busy day. Business staff busy, as usual! 35 11—'Mi 1 'i I'ii ii Ih'Wy R-: Smile, Jim, being editor of the Orange and Black does have some advantages. Come on, it couldn’t be that bad! ORANGE AND BLACK The page editors contemplate a finished product. 36 Perry White says, “This situation is doubleplus ungood! This year the Orange and Black has changed in its appearance and subject matter. No longer is the paper printed by a printer, but it is published by the Graphic Arts Department of H.H.S. The material is gathered by the newspaper staff and members of the journalism class, both under the supervision of Mr. Rodgers. The Orange and Black was frequently supplemented by fliers concerning impor- tant events and people of H.H.S. Several fliers included complete coverage of the senior play, “1984,” football, basketball, and wrestling teams, and the school mu- sical, “Guys and Dolls.” 37 A little faster there, Margaret! STUDENT COUNCIL Rick wants to know who’s cracking the funnies back there. The executives attend to some unfinished business. This year the Student Council, led by Rick Contel, constantly worked on a worthwhile project. The yearly responsi- bilities such as managing the school store, running class elections, and enforc- ing cafeteria regulations ran smoothly. The annual talent show was enjoyed by all, and the clothing drive proved very successful. The newly framed constitution which hung in the main corridor for the first time this year, stood, as the foundation of the Student Council, and from this the council got its direction for all activities. 38 The governing body. 39 Rick and Sue discuss the class elections. Senior members. Well, it says here . . . Senior members Hi-Y OFFICERS—Jeff Krug, Vice-President; Jim Hull, President; Dwane Michael, Treasurer; Rick Contel, Secretary; Dick Mondorff, Sergeant-at-Arms; Vince Ahern, Chaplain. Just give it one last try. Accompanists Male Voices 42 Alto Voices CHORUS Soprano Voices 43 BAND 44 Here our band is adding pep and enthusiasm to one of our many Cheer-A-Baloos. This year, the proud Hanover High School Band, with its striking new uni- forms and excellent director, Mr. Po- laski, provided us with a lively musical background for many school functions. The Spring Concert featured “Rhapsody In Blue” and “Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral.” Of course we’ll never forget the spirited half-time shows which pre- sented such eye-popping routines and ear- catching tunes as “Taste of Honey,” “More,” “Downtown,” “Pink Panther,” and “Goldfinger.” 45 Just one more scale! This is the life! 47 1984 This year the senior play, presented by the class of ’66, was given on December 9 and 11 in the Hanover Senior High Auditorium. “1984,” under the direction of Mrs. Jessica Shelter, was the story of two young adults who were struggling to remain independent in a world slowly be- coming mechanized. With the hard work of the actors, prompters, managers, di- rectors, and all the committees, the play was very successful, and one that all who participated in and those who viewed it will never forget. I was reported by my own child, Gladys! Kids, the show must go on! Jim, how many times must I tell you? Two and two does not equal four! 48 SENIOR PLAY The Cast Guard........................ More I cannot wish you. Hey, you weren't really supposed to hit me! GUYS AND DOLLS On February 16 and 17, the first musical produc- tion ever attempted at H. H. S. swept its audience off its feet. Guys and Dolls, a story of the Salvation Army's attempt to transform the ways of the N. Y. gamblers was superbly performed under the direction of Mr. Schloyer, chorus director. The songs ranged from the tender “More I Cannot Wish You” to the seat lifting “Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat.” Sarah and Adelaide share their sorrow HOT BOX girls I saw you take that hat! Happiness, to a spectator, is winning the game; while happiness, to the player, is self-satisfaction and pride. After the game, whether a loss or a win, he considers how well he played himself and how well he played as a member of the team. A touchdown run or pass, a perfect block, a blocked punt, or a good defensive play gives the player a sense of pride while a missed assignment, fumble, or dropped pass can make him feel that he is all alone out there. But he is not alone; there are ten others ready to accept the blame for the loss. The players know that it takes eleven players to lose, but it likewise takes eleven to win. As a spectator, happiness should be accompanied by pride and honor. 71 The Varsity CHEERLEADERS Sally Fuhrman r J.V.—Jean Shoemaker, Hope Volin, Sue Attlcsbergcr, Cindy Hoffacker (kneel- ing), Patti George, Lana Wertz. This yearly occurrence is the taking of the un- derclassmen pictures which usually disrupts the daily schedule that is rigidly run. Some teachers are lucky enough to have their class interrupted by the hardwork- ing staff! We would like to dedicate this section to the faculty and students who endured much beyond the field of duty. Ill Rick Contel, able-bodied President of the Student Council, conscientiously fulfills the duties of his office. Chorus, basketball, and dramatics are among his vari- ous activities. Melvin Dell President CLASS HISTORY When our class set sail for June 1966, we chris- tened ourselves the good ship Individualism. Before we step into the outside world, let's stop and reminisce about the many things which have brightened our three years at sea. Although we chose to be individualistic, we still worked together as a whole. Our class was all for one, and one for all. We showed this in our magazine sales. Our sophomore and junior years were not productive as far as money goes, so in our senior year we banded together and went ail out. Everyone knows that we set a record for sale of magazines. Then we made the senior play, 1984, a class project, which over half the class helped stage. We wanted to be distinctive. Our individualism carried over into sports, as we plunged enthusiastically into every field; football, wres- tling, basketball, track, baseball, golf, tennis, and intra- murals. We have led the Hawks to many exciting vic- tories and have supported them through those inevitable defeats. In the field of showmanship, we certainly did not lack. First came Seventeenth Summer, then the Mouse That Roared. Band concerts, vocal concerts, the senior play, the musical, and the oratorical contests all re- ceived our devotion. As our ship reaches its destiny, all of the travelers shall remember the trip with mixed emotions—happi- ness, accomplishment, pride, yet sadness, too, because now our high school days are no more. And we, the class of ’66, will sail slowly into the sunset. 114 Sally Leister Vice-president ---------1 W£W$ kv • yxe«u: ; l | liri - • « ■• Kathy Lippy Secretary Patricia Dusman Treasurer Class officers and advisers, Mr. Leister and Mr. Oravitz. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society honors stu- dents for their outstanding achievements in four basic fields: Character—reliability, honesty, industry, and morality; Leader- ship—initiative, influence for good and concern for others; Service—work for the school and the community; and Scholar- ship. . . victory, however long and hard the road may be . . SPRING SPORTS TRACK Throughout the 1966 season, the Hanover Nighthawks had many outstanding track stars. The two with the highest scores were Tim Kniss and Bob Rohrbaugh. Hanover was under the able coaching of Steve Padjen who finished his thirteenth season as track coach. Mr. Mortimore completed the year as assistant coach. With so many experienced men returning, the team’s future looks brighter. Would you believe—the track team! GOLF This year the golf squad did a fine job with six wins and six losses. The backbone of the team includes Forrest McCall, Ron Mitchell, Russ Wagner, Rick Koenig, and Doug Miller. With all five starting men coming back next year, coach Kreuter hopes for a championship season. Mr. Kreuter gives the golf team some tips. A real swinger. TENNIS The 1966 tennis team was unique this year, due to the addition of a new player, Joyce Shanbarger, the first girl to occupy a position in the varsity tennis team. Two senior lettcrmcn, Jim Bittinger and Jan Hermanns returned to give the team an added boost. Also new to the H.H.S. pro- gram was the junior varsity team. Under the guidance of Mr. Harner, the varsity did an excellent job in the fields of good sportsmanship and spirit. The Varsity Club shows potential talent. BASEBALL The ’66 team has done a remarkable job this spring with more than twice as many wins as in the past two years com- bined. The hard fought and exciting games were led by Coach Hileman and Assistant Coach Woods. GOOD SPORTS- WIN OR LOSE Our H.H.S. baseball team.
