1963 NOR NIR To the Picket on Center Square we dedicate the 1963 Nornir. In commemoration of the Civil War Centennial of Hanover, this yearbook honors the symbol of that war. Today the students of our school may look back upon one hundred years of recorded history to the worst disuniting factor on the consciences of the people of the United States—the Civil War. The words of Abraham Lincoln in his Gettysburg Address—that immortal speech which has become a classic symbol of the struggle between the North and the South—have been used on our division titles as symbolic of activities in our school. On the lighter side, however, the symbol of our school—the Nighthawk— has been adapted to Ulysses S. Hawk, the figure whose sketched image appears on the following pages as a guide through this year—this Civil War Centennial in Hanover, Pennsylvania. Hence, to you, the weathered statue on Center Square, the honored Picket —we dedicate this year of school memories—1963. 2 DEDICATION 5 Mr. Richard L. McCool Mr. Richard G. Stottlcmycr Administrative Assistants In the years to come when you peruse this book, memories of your high school years will undoubtedly fill you with nostalgia. The path to the future is in your hands. My earnest wish is that you will find happiness and success in your future endeavors. Elmer S. Stevens, Ed.D. Superintendent of Schools Mrs. Doris A. To old High we pledge our favor No honor shall she lack, While we pledge ourselves defenders Of the Orange and the Black. Through the three long years of high school Midst scenes we know so well, And mystic charms to knowledge We vainly seek to spell. When we win athletic victories On floor or field or track, Still we pledge ourselves defenders Of the Orange and the Black. When the cares of life o’er take us And our locks are tinged with gray, Our dearest hopes betray us False fortunes fall away. We can vanish care and sadness. And turn our memories back, And recall the days of gladness ’neath The Orange and the Black. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS On September 9, 1960, we the class of ’63 appre- hensively took our places within the walls of EHS. Soon we were received into the ranks of the entire stu- dent body. Our first money making project, selling pea- nuts, was a great success as was the tri-class play “Fam- ily Portrait,” and the Senior Prom “My Secret Island,” which we helped to stage. By September of 1961, we the class of ’63 were confident and more anxious to participate in senior high school life. We assisted in the publication of the school paper The Orange and Black; were in the band, orchestra, or chorus; took part in athletics—football, basketball, baseball, track, wrestling, tennis, and golf; displayed our dramatic ability in the tri-class plays “Brother Orchid” and “Cry Havoc”; sold fruit cakes and staged paper drives to finance the Senior Prom and improve the condition of our treasury; and when June came, helped the Sophomores prepare for the Senior Prom, “Soiree a Paris.” Finally in September 1962 we began our last year at EHS. Now we plunged into the various responsibili- ties of being seniors. What senior in our class shall ever forget College Board Examinations, the band's partici- pation in Macy’s Parade, exchanging senior pictures, the Winter, Spring, and Vocal concerts, the successful production of “Our Town,” and our sports program? Soon to our amazement we realized our days at EHS were ending, and that some of the things we were doing, we were doing for the last time. This yearbook not only contains more pages but more page area. We have not sacrificed quality for quantity though. Our staff has put forth much time and effort to present to you—a yearbook of memories which in the future, will serve as a key to the past. Photographer ponders. Miss Myers and Sandy Cohn choose the lesser of two evils. Editorial staff struggles to meet a deadline. The page editors look over the Orange and Black. ORANGE AND BLACK The Orange and Black, our school newspaper, has kept its readers informed this year about the activities of EHS, through the efforts of its competent staff. The Press Club, an important facet of the Orange and Black under the able supervision of Mr. Rodgers and Miss Overbaugh, met during club period. Its mem- bers were taught to write articles, set up newspapers, and proof read copies. So that’s how he gets his Orange and Black customers! The Aronde Trio sings for the Orange and Black. 46 Editor Faye Unger ponders! Behind the scenes in the developing room. The Staff lines up for assignments. “And further more” President Charlie. The Magnificent Seven.’ BAND Hey, Look Me Over!’ “Down The Field.” We’re win- ning! Amid the strains of “Down the Field” the Eichel- berger Higli School Marching Band entered another busy and highly prosperous year. Their precisioned drills during half-time certainly added to the enjoyment of the spectators at football games. A pride in the band developed when it was discovered they were to be the honor band at the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. This event was highlighted by an invitation to appear in Harrisburg in the Inaugural Parade for Gov- ernor Scranton. Beside the band’s active marching schedule, they presented their yearly Winter and Spring Concerts. Under the able direction of Bruce D. Wiser, the band certainly had a full and interesting year. But Macy’s must be here! 52 The high stepping six plus! Blow ye trumpets. Say Cheese! Gun it. Coach! Recognize anybody? 54 ORCHESTRA Strings prepare to play for the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Conference. Under our newly streamlined director, Mr. Clyde Mummert, the Senior High Orchestra has joined forces with the Junior High Orchestra. Those members whom we have pictured here are the senior high school par- ticipants. With his combined orchestra, Mr. Mummert led his proteges of the strings to play for the Pennsyl- vania Music Educators Association conference at Har- risburg in November. This occasion proved to be quite an honor for EHS. In contrast to previous years’ practices, this year’s Winter Concert featured the same string section. However, in the Spring Concert the en- tire string, wind, and percussion sections were featured. Thus a delightful year of “bowing” and “plucking” ended for the combined Senior and Junior High Or- chestra. Our illustrious senior members 55 Silent Night . . . Steve Padjen recorded his fiftieth win as head coach, and a new record of three hundred and six points scored in a season was established. The Hawks gained the respect of the York County op- ponents by teamwork, initiative, and speed on the field at all times. Individual honors were given to seniors Don Coff- man, Parry Spahr, John Bowman, and Tom Huston; they were nominated to the Big Thirty-Three team of Pennsylvania. Coffman and Spahr were also given hon- orable mention on the all-state team. Assisting Padjen in his successful season were coach- es Lcn Zataveski, Dave Graybill, and Ed Slezosky. Managers Ed Lightner and Mike Seibert had a busy season keeping track of the equipment. Coach Padjen’s 50th win is celebrated with the seniors. Hofifacker hunts a friend. It’s mine! Let me have it!
