95 I9-if as-I BULLEUPS AND SLASON LITH Q?IHT1fF LIES tith 15 victories and only 5 defeets,the Hanover High second team completed one of its best seasons in recent years. The team was as smooth as any teen it met and won most of its names by large margins. The starting lineup usually consisted of Kelly and James Selig, forwtrdsg Jr. Brooks, center, and captain Gas- sert and John Selig, cuards, Frederick Yunker also started the last half of the sefson as Jr. Brooks and Kelly were pulled in occasionally to fill first team gaps. Gray and Dean were used heavily as first and second substitutes. The others who saw service were-eRobert Adams, Dody Wil- liams, Gene Coppess, and John A, Brooks. Their victories were two over Saluda, North Madison, Deputy, Dupont and Central--no county team defeated them. Other victories were over Lexington, Charlestown, and New Washington. The losses were ro Rising Sun, Jackson Township, Lex- ington, Austin and New hashington, Captain Gassert was high point man of the season with 87 points and Kelley very close with 79. Kelley had the highest average however because he played in fewer games. Hanover is very proud of their second team and hope to have as good a team next year. JUNIOR HIGH A hard fighting Junior High team fought their way through the twelfth annual South Eastern Indiana Jr. High School Athletic Association Tournament in Madison the 12th and 15th of February to win the championship for the first time for Hanover. Friday afternoon they opened up on the defending champ ions, Central to the tune of 51-12, Tull, Richmond, and Lowry topped scorinn honors with 16,15,and 12 points each. The hardest and most exciting game of the tournament was played that night as Hanover defeated Austin 20-18 in a double overtime period but Manaugh came through with two free throws to win in the sudden death period. Lowry made a free throw with 5 seconds left in the game, after Austin had made a magnificent rally to pull ahead 18-17. Saturday afternoon the Jr. Hi met and defeated the Madison Jr.'s by 0 21-15 tune. In the finals Saturday night the Hanover Jr's wallop- ed the North Vernon team 24-11. Lowry, Tull and Devercey of North Vernon held scoring honors with 12, 10, and 8 points each, The CHAMPIONS received a gold trophy about a foot high. At the half the score wig 18-8.8 ThgSBulldogs continued to roll in the 5rd-quar- ter and the quarter ended 28-14. Leading 28-14 the Bull- dogs coasted the rest of the way to victory by outscoring the Red Devils 7-4 and the game ended 55-18 Hanover. , On January 28, the Deputy Panthers came to Hanover to win over the Bulldogs 18-17. The second quarter found the Bulldogs trailing 8-5. The third quarter was about the e entire game and in the last same for the Bulldogs tallied score for score with thers. The Bulldogs started to click in the 4th and cmne up within one point of winning but the was blown to end the game 18-17 in favor of Deputy On the 50th of January the Bulldogs journeyed ing Sun to be defeated 56-51 in a fast last half. the Pan quarter whistle to Ris- The Bull dogs started the game when Uebel and Gillesbie made field oals, but Thomas the colored flash of the 'Shinersu made 3 points. The Bulldogs were more matching the 'Shlners in the 5rd quarter until Cartwright scored four shot s to put the uShinersH ahead 59-22. The nShinersn then put their first team back in and won 56-31. On February 6,the New Washington nMustangsH j to Hanover to win over the Bulldogs 25-24 in a thr game. In the first that was to be tied the nMustangsn th were tied with them ourneyed illing quarter New Washington built up a lead but never topped. The Bulldogs matched quarter when Adams made a free throw. Adams fouled and the game ended 25-24 for New Washington. In a fast last three minutes the North Madison Tigers beat the Hanover Bulldogs 56-26. The score was nip and tuck the first three quarters with each team scoring free- ly. At the end of the first quarter the score was B-7 Han over. The half ended 15-ll Hanover but the third quarter was a bit different since the score was 21-17 North Town. The Bulldogs came back with a bang in the third quarter and as the clock rolled to a 5 minutes the score was tied 26-26 but then North Madison started hitting and made lO scores in the last 3 minutes to cnd the game 56-26. Even though they were behind when they went in the Hanover second team beat Saluda's first team 28-17. Han- over led at the first quarter 6-5 and at the half ll-7, Srluda ste Here Coach pped in in the 3rd quarter with a lead of 13-12. Brown substituted for his entire first five, Kelley, Adams, Jr. Brooks, John Selig, and Gassort. In the fourth quarter the subs made ll points while holding Salu- da to two field goals and a foul shot. This was the last game on the schedule. 1 ELANGE or
