' AWARDS A This year the annual basketball awards were given before the assembly to a greet many of the bell pleyers Two sweaters were given this year along with several letters. Those receiving sweaters were Bill Huber and Grover Lowe, The sweaters were navy blue with white letters and chevrons, Those receiving letters wcreg Kenneth Tull, Boone LaGrange, Albert Adams, Glenn Uebcl Joe Wells, Earl Coppcss, Kenneth Volz, Frank Gillespie and Arley Kelley. W BASKmToALL BANQUET The nnnuul oesketbell banquet wus held April 21 at the High School building. Mrs. Harold Tull acted es toast-mistress. Speeches were given by members of the faculty and of the b3SkUtb4l1 team. John Ven Liew, Hen over College coach, was the main speaker of the evening Conch Brown presented the team with a hsnner for winning the County Tournament. This banner is 24N X 569 blue with white lettering with e tom. It is s progressive banner the first year Hanover won the ! gold fringe on the bot- end numerals for 1958, County Tournament and 1941, for this year, were attached to it. - Y ---w lXlXELfXlz.:HT THE BULLDOGS WIN COUNTY TOURNEY For the second time in the history of Hanover High School the Bulldogs won the County Tournament. The Bulldogs started the tournament by defeating the Saluda Lions in a very close and exciting game by the score of 25-18. The Lions had defeated the Bulldogs the week be fore and the Bulldogs got revenge for the licking. Tull Uebel, and LaGrange were high point men in this game with 6, 6, and 5 points to their credit respectively. The Bulldogs drew the bye which required them to play only two games to win the tournament. In the last game the Bulldogs defeated the Deputy Panthers in a very close game 21-18. The Panthers had eliminated the Central Wildcats and the North Madison Tigers to win the right to play the Bulldogs in the final game. The Bulldogs were behind at the end of the first quarter 5- 1, but led at half time, 8-7. The Bulldogs turned on the heat in the third quarter and piled up a score which enabled them to lead at the end of the third quar ter, 15-9. The Panthers came up on the Bulldogs in the last quarter but just cou1dn't catch the fast stepping Bulldogs and Hanover won her second County Tournament. Two of the Bulldogs were placed on the All County Team: Kenneth Tull for the third straight year, and Bill Huber, his first year. The total points scored by each player during the Tournament are as follows: Tull 15, Uebel ll, LaGrange 5, Lowe 0, V012 7, and Huber 8. Winning this tournament was quite an honor for each player, as well as the many Hanover basketball fans. SEGTIONAL TQURNEY The Bulldogs drew that Lexington Minute-Men and were defeated 55-15. The Bulldogs took the lead, but Lexington soon scored goals to tie the score. In the second quarter Lexington took the lead and remained in front as the half ended. In the third period Lexington widened their margin and from then on it wwe no doubt that they would be the winners. ' 41, 1 THE SECOND TEAM This year's second team turned in an impressive re- cord of ten wins against 8 defeats. The team had some promising ball players in Wells, Adams, Kelley, Dean, Gillespie, and Coppess. Those boys are a little inex- perienced but look as good as ball players that they came in contact with this year. The starting five was composed of Wells and Kelley forwards, Gillespie center and Adams and Coppess guards. The teams they won and lost to are as follows: Won over Deputy, Lexington, New Washington, and Saluda twice each and Central and Dupont once each. They lost to North madison, Austin, Dupont, Hising bun, Central, and Charlestown once each and lost both games to Henryville. A me .nmxoa HIGH TEAM The Jr. High team had a very successful year, win- ning six games and losing five. The team was made up of three seventh graders and two eighth graders. The starting five composed of Lowry and Tull forwards, Gassert and Richmond guards and Junior Brooks center. In the first game of their season the Bullpups lost to the North Madison Juniors 19-15. The second game was with Madison in which the Hanover lads lost 17-ll in a very well played game. In their next game the Bullpups were defeated by the Central Jr. High team 25-15. Out of the remainder of the games the boys did quite well. They defeated Austin twice, Dupont, Madison, Vevay, North Madison ence each, and lost to Central twice. In the Jr. High tournament the eullpups drew Vevay and won over them 27-15 and played Central in the semi-finals and were defeated 19-18 in an overtime game. The Bull- pups purchased new suits this year and it sure must have done some good. They wen five out of their last six games which is a good enough record for any team. Leaving the teamsthis year will be Jr. Brooks,J. Brooks, J. Coppess, B. Bell, D. Gassert, and H. Adams. JR. HI. BASKETBALL WOYS BANQUET The Jr. Hi. B. B. Boys banquet was held Tuesday, February 25, in the playroom in honor of the excellent playing of these boys. All but two of the first and second teams and several of the parents and teachers were present. Mr. Brown acted as toastmaster and all of the first team boys made excellent speeches as well as some of the parents and teachers. This was tho first banquet of its kind and the boys hope it will become an established custom.
