CEDAR LAKE, INDIANA CO-EDITORS: ADVISOR: Sue Urbanski Mr. Ray Shrader Paulette Hoycus “THE KEY’’ 1968 HANOVER CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL Seniors 5-18 2 FOREWORD The 1967-68 KEY” is dedicated to the graduating seniors of Hanover Central High School. In view of the expanding demands placed on today’s youth, this year’s class of 1968 has met the challenge with a full commission and can be proud of their achieve- ment. As the first graduating class of Hanover, it is the sincere hope of our yearbook staff, as well as the hope of the tireless faculty and progressive administration which have assisted in maturing this year’s seniors, that in years yet to come, our book will reflect a small portion of the life which abounded within the confines of H.C.H.S. In addition, the ’68 KEY is also dedicated to the founders and innovators who have laid the groundwork that will persevere in years ahead and preserve H.C.H.S, as one of Lake County’s finest educational institutions. Among countless acknowledgements that should be made, it is evident that the pro- gress of H.C.H.S. has been demonstrated during the 1967-68 school year in many areas. As a full, 4-year institution, curricula grew to meet demands of Physics, German, Latin, Chemistry, Journalism and related areas of instruction. Activities afforded to the 1967-68 student, in any grade, ranged from sound drama presentations to any number of musical, athletic, and academic endeavors. Thrills this year came to many students for the first time. After a successful foot- ball season—Hanover's very first—the magic of Indiana’s State High School Basketball Tournament captured many. The taste of success and the realization of failure, the thrill of victory and the anguish of defeat, the feel of desire and the fall of indifference, the growth of concern and the absence of apathy,—all were a part of Hanover’s initial maturing year—1968. Hanover Central High School congratulates this year’s graduating class. But what is unique is the fact that this year’s class, as well as every other class, congratulates Hanover Central High School. Both demand the commendation— Well Done!” The 1968 Key Staff 4 SENIORS Ron Dill Tim Donnelly Randy Dreiling Seniors Bev Dunn, Tom Kooi, Joyce Richards, Jerome Schweitzer, and Ron Dill move through Hanover’s lunch line. 7 Debi Fulkerson Ray Gerald Bonnie Gudmundson Richard Hapner Gary Harrell 8 Senior John Hurst chalks up a victory as he pins his Peotone opponent. These students are charter members of a new educational institution— Hanover Central High School. This is a distinct privilege which you should be proud of. and an honor that comes to only a few. It is our hope and belief that your education here has been a challenge to you, and that you are being graduated with a feeling of some measure of success, and that, whether you are bound for the trades, vocations, farming, homemaking, college, or the arts and the professions, your schooling shall have provided a sound foundation. Judson 0 Hanover Central High School fielded its first football team in 1967 under the direction of head coach Dean Cox and assistant Ray Shrader. Led by sophomore fullback Larry Boyer, .the Wildcats emerged the vic- tor in four of five junior varsity contests. After an opening 21-6 victory over an equally inexperienced N. Newton team, Hanover's gridders downed an impressive Momence squad, 20-7. The Cats' undefeated season was spoiled by a 27-12 setback at the hands of Rich Central. Defensively, the Wildcats turned in four stellar performances, including two shutouts, led by Boyer, sophomore tackles Mike Mosier and Keith Robinson, and a host of defensive standouts. Fresh- man halfback Greg Voica and sophomore Bob Wernes rounded out an explosive running attack commanded by quarterback Joe Deno. In 1968 the Cats graduate to varsity competition as they will encounter Wheatfield, N. Judson, River Forest, W. Central, East Gary, and Momence in varsity tussles. 63 ' r Dennis Jensen (No. 80) and sophomore tackle Keith Robinson (No. 72) close in on a North Judson runner. Art Hitch- cock (No. 88) and Don Pitcher (No. 62) offer pursuit. The Wildcats of Hanover Central won the contest, 14-0. Mel Granger (No. 21) preserves a Hanover shutout at North Judson with a key interception. Leading ground gainer Larry Boyer breaks into the North Judson secondary en route to one of two Hanover TD's.
