HL G Basketball Roundup The Hannibal-LaGrange Trojans started off the l98O portion of their season in good fashion. The Trojans were involved in the Blackhawk Tournament at K ewanee, Illinois, January 3-5. Hannibal was the defending champion and again advanced to the championshuv round, only to fall to Blackhawk East in the championshqw game. The Trojans had advanced to the final round by defeating Muscatine, Iowa 79-60 in first round action. Mark Buffington was the leading scorer with 22, followed by Marty Smyser with I6. Henry Reidel had 2I rebounds. In semi-final action, Hannibal defeated Olive Harvey College 81-69. Coach Buffington and the players were very happy to play in the championship game. On January IOth, the Trojans traveled to Linn, Missouri to play Linn Tech. Having already defeated Linn Tech. at Hannibal, HLG came away with another win. The final score was 8 7-69. The Trojans played very well in the beginning of the first and second halves, but slacked off in between. Marty Smyser was the leading scorer for HLG with 22 points. Smyser was II-I5 on his shots from the field, hitting 8-I0 in the first half On that night, the Trojans made 34 of 57 shots for an average of 6OZ. Following Smyser in the scoring department, were Henry Reidel and Rod Breuniger each with I6, and Mark Buffington with I2. Everyone on the Trojan team scored. Leading scorer for Linn Tech. was Perri Finn with I6. Indian Hills was the next opponent for Hannibal-LaGrange. The Trojans traveled to Centerville, Iowa to play them on January l2th. Indian Hills'height caused problems for HL G, as the home team came away a 99- 75 victor. This advantage hekved them to obtain a 24-6 lead early in the game. Henry Reidel topped all scorers with nine field goals and seven free throws for 25 points. Todd Strubinger had I5 points, and Marty Smyser contributed I4 to the Trojan attack.
