Members of the Winthrop Team drill themselves on various subjects to prepare for an upcoming competition. Members include: Eric Pohl, James Winbush, Russell Webb, Kevin Martin, Michelle Beaty, Kathryn Greene, Amy Hickman, Melissa Potzler, Jandrette Rhoe, Sandra Emerson. Winthrop Team The Winthrop Team is an organiza- tion which stresses competitive academics. The team practiced three times each week on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday after school for an hour. At each practice Mr. Pohl and Mrs. Rice drilled the students with questions from diverse areas. One point was awarded for each correct response and a point revoked for an incomect response if the advisor had not read the entire question. The four students with most points competed against other academics teams from different high schools. This years top four were Captain Brian Cromer, Kevin Martin, Russell Webb, and Amy Hickman. The 1986-87 National Honor Society consists of approximate- ly 90 members. Eligibility is open to tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students. Membership qualifications include maintain- ing an overall 5.6 grade point av- erage, along with demonstrating good character, leadership abili- ties, and a record of community service. The Honor Society meets once a month to discuss business and community activities. Various professionals from the commu- nity come to share with the stu- dents in their fields of knowledge. The National Honor Society helps students to develop an en- thusiasm for scholarship, stimu- late a desire to render service, promote leadership, and devel- op character. Girl's nd Boy's State Outstanding T.L. Hanna repre- sentatives were taught about local, state, and national government. Boy's State was held at the Citadel and Girl's State was held at the Uni- versity of South Carolina. The students were encouraged to campaign, run for office, and carry out their duties once elected.
