His class- room reflects the difference between despotic authority and deserved respect. He challenges minds for tomorrow by extending five fingers of perception rather than just an open hand of knowledge. Joking during the lighter moments, yet returning to seriousness when the time calls, he develops character as well as minds. It was time to make a reality out of a dream. People began memorizing lines, learning songs and orchestra scores, painting and building the set, and organizing the publicity. Opening night the cast received two standing ovations. After playing to four full houses at Hanna, the show went to Clemson for two performances. The work and efforts of many people made the musical a success. Oklahoma brought many people together and was the beginning of a proud tradition at T. L. Curly shows how Jud can hang himself. It was the most successful in the unit's history. A genuine concern for the wel- fare of the battalion on the parts of all cadet officers, instructors, and the cadets themselves brought about an espirit de corps unique to this year's unit. The incorporation of several new programs provided for mo re efficient and expedient procedures in matters of discipline and policy. An honor code board was formed to handle affairs concerning the central most ingredient of the Navy unit, the Honor Concept. lVlany activities took place this year. The unit had several invited speakers to come in, among them a nuclear submarine commander and a Naval Academy recruiting officer. The formal inspection by the officer in charge of all N.J.B.O.T.C. Units in the Sixth Naval District was followed by the annual Fall lVlilitary Ball. Break- ing custom, the unit replaced the Spring Military Ball with a dance for the entire student body. The final and most looked forward-to events were the sophomore, junior, and senior field trips. All this combined to make it a year to remember for the N.J.B.O.T.C. Battalion. It was certainly one of the most hard-working. The cindermen began working out in the middle of Feb- ruary for the first meet on IVlarch 8. They could be found on any weekday lifting weights, jogging, sprinting, stretching, and making it hurt until near dusk. This built a team spirit that is usually lacking in a track team, and it showed through in an undefeated season. This team showed some of the best spirit seen in recent years, and with such standouts as Reno Allen, Buck Thompson, and Ed Rice, outscored their opponents 293-57. As Re- gion 2-AAAA Champions, the Jackets were rewarded for their long hours of hard practice. The team completely upheld Anderson's record of athletic excellence and was undoubtedly one ofthe best in the history ofthe school. ' ' uf gp, Epilogue Through experiencing nature we are forced to recognize The depth or shallowness of our own experience. We are forced to choose life over existence or Feel guilty in our mockery of it. We see our ideas and ideals take root and grow with the trees, Becoming concrete symbols of our constant striving for Knowledge of ourselves and others. We seek knowledge with a passion equal only to that with Which we sustain life. . ln essence the two are one, and the One veils itself within- The mysteries of nature. When all else is gone from a constantly-changing world, There will be nature. Nature does not know time: it is the only part of existence That can laugh at the power of time. . 186 J in 5 eff rigs.. Editors' Note The year has passed and has been filed away in the bank of memories. For the staff this has been a confusing job. A job which loomed large and forbidding is unbelievably over. A book which was a nebulous shadow at the beginning has become a reality. Working under obvious restrictions, our staff immediately began work after three months preparation. At times the staff worked with superhuman energy, at most other times they nonchalantly wasted three-fourths of the hour. Taking up residence in Room 201, the staff developed an unprecedented filing system. Because we quickly lost all ma- terials, we failed to meet the first, second and third deadlines. Because our staff was so unique, we wish to show the disposition and efforts of each individual. Ted, alias Crip, tried his hand in many activities, succeeding only in meeting his Junior Class deadline. Pouring forth his creativity, he surprised us all with his personalized Valentine sacks. He also used his imagination to put up with May Ligon as Co-Business Manager. Robert Bye-Bye Curry did a deserving job on golf and tennis. Mrs. Ashley's renowned typing methods didn't recur in Robert's layouts. The results of Robert's long hours and hard work were seen in the Sophomore and Faculty sections. Annette honored the staff by having the neatest layouts. Her quietness and steady work provided an atmose phere of tranquillity during disorderly meetings. Her efforts produced the Junior-Senior and Faculty sections. Penny Nickel Hall managed to have all her deadlines postponed until the last day. She spent her extra time singing and dancing to entertain the rest of the staff. After ruining five annuals with red magic marker, she added the Honors and Cheerleader sections to TIDINGS '71. May Ligon retold the Mother Goose storyz She kept all of us laughing and none of us working as she narrated the latest from Belton. Besides helping Ted write receipts, she did an original job on the Homecoming section. Kendra blinded us after the Christmas holidays with her ring. She amused us with her interpretation of Jill. Her Senior Class and Senior Superlative sections are to be commended. Theresa, taking time from her clarinet to assist Ted with the Junior Class, was one of the few who could type. Her ability was seen on many of the clubs. Toni lwe don't know all her namesi never ceased to amaze us with her tales and encounters. Although she had a wild imagination, she added her efforts to the Senior Class. Stephen Rosey Thorne dumbfounded us with his profanity. Although we can't see him at Annapolis, we realize his potential. His Track, Basketball, Football, and Navy sections came after much worry on our part. He survived May Ligon's harassing and proved indispensible. Mrs. Burriss was always around to help with club pictures. Mr. Keith took time out from his latest creations to give us advice and en- couragement. Mr. Pruitt's patience with our ignorance made 1Pa,,.eWQ9w3f For a complete picture of how TlDlNGS '71 was created, one must be familiar with the two who inspired this work of art. First of all there is Paula. We all got the distinct impression that Little Bo Peep didn't like us when she would ask us to do stupid things like layouts, but when she gave us used Valentines with her five word vocabulary, Did you do your layouts? engraved on the back, we knew it. And then there is Joey. We discovered quickly that he was not only talented as a photographer but that he could forge Mr. Pruitt's signature like a professional. We feel it is important to warn any of Joey's future employees that he embezzles money and lists it in the books as a business expense. Where is all that film you bought, Joey? Our editors worried a lot. They griped a lot. The only thing they didn't do a lot of was work. Nevertheless, they were the editors, we were the staff, and this is TlDlNGS '71. Tidings '71 a reality. fm' QM!! ..,,. - we ' N Paula and Joey ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Mr. Fred Pickens for his inexhaustible supply of pictures and time.
