N t Spanish Club members examine pottery from an ancient Spanish ancestory. During retreat members speak fluent Spanish to each other. Club learns another culture Que tiene Ud, que hacer esta tarde?-0-Estoy in la calle Lee Trevino ahora, y tengo mucha ambre! These expressions and more were often heard from the members of the Spanish Club, formerly named Ballet Folklorico. Under the guidance of the club sponsor, Ofelia Sweigart, the club left for a retreat in the hills of Ft. Davis, Texas and Prude Ranch, a working ranch and hotel, on November 8, 9 and 10 with other students from around Texas and Mexico. Seven students from Hanks and Sweigart traveled four hours southeast of EI Paso to experience a living cultural event of talking with native speakers in their own language. The trip was an opportunity to study Spanish, to meet and communicate with fellow students from Mexico studying English in a casual atmosphere of a Texas working ranch. Although this was the first year of the cultural encounter, there were many other activities at the retreat planned such as, language workshops, horseback riding, swimming, hiking, dancing and trips to the McDonald Observatory. Sweigart said that the trip benefited the students from Mexico and other schools. The purpose of the trip allowed students to exchange ideas, learn from others and improve their oral skills in another language. Spanish Club 77 qnlg usluedg
