Another year, another adviser The job of a student publication is to capture school memories and activities in pictures and copy. This year's Shield staff found that to be no easy task. Planning for this year's book began early last summer, when co-editors Lisa Lower and Robert Rivera started organizing plans for the book. The Shield underwent great changes in 1985-86. New- comer, Noel Knight, found being a yearbook advisor was not as easy as he thought it might be. With this being my first year, I did not really know what to expect, but the staff surpassed all of my expectations, Knight commented. This was also the first year the Shield staff had a male and female editor team. The co- editors different points of view caused a varied style in the book. A lot of pressure was eased when deadlines were met by the Shields hardworking staff. Most of our deadlines went by smoothly this year, but there is always room for improvement, Lower said. The Shield is primarily financed through S.A. card sales and advertising, and with sales being up this year the book was able to produce a lot of different styles and more color than the yearbook has ever had. Representative of Herff Jones Publishing Company, Donna Smith said, We strive to improve quality and content, while still maintaining our Shield traditions. This year the staffs main goal was to focus on more color and new layout designs throughout the book. 72 Shield Co-editor, Bobby Rivera reviews the days agenda Co-editor Lisa Lower puts the final touches o Sc I s l

Choir displays musical talents Do, Re, Me, Fa, So, La, Te, Do . .. lf a person were enrolled in choir this past year, this might sound familiar. All sorts of people were attracted to choir with a common interest of music, singing and the performing arts. To be an outstanding choir student you have to have tremendous dedication to music and to your group, you also have to have much self- discipline, commented choir instructor, Ms. Beulah Herbold. Outstanding students for this past year included Melissa Parks, Monica Martinez and Eliza Stewart, who were all Area Choir members. Jeanette Molinar was the only student who qualified for All-State Choir. There were also many Hanks contestants in the Solo and Ensemble competition. There were around fifty students enrolled in choir this past year. Besides singing these students learned to read music, perform before an audience, and learned about the lives of different music composers. Sophomore Stephanie Giddens explained, Choir is fun and challenging, singing is a big part of my life. lf students didn't like to perform there were two separate boys and girls classes. Students could have tried-out for the Troubadours, a slightly more advanced, performing class. Hanks students displayed the needed dedication to make an outstanding choir year. 74 Choir Talal Hatar, Tim Cannon, Greg Anderson, Derek McClellan, Steve Painter, and Henry Barba. Melissa Parks, Jannette Molinar, Monica Martinez, Christy Sorenson, Stephanie Giddens and Eliza Stewart.
