The color guard Qrightl and the rifle team fbelowj lead the homecoming parade. Captain Baker instructs Cadets with their first aid. 44 ROTC The Hank's ROTC 2nd Bri- gade 6th batallion, consist- ed of all six companies. The Hank's ROTC department had the distinct honor of be- ing one of the top 10 per- cent in the nation and proudly wore the gold star on their uniforms. Hanks was the only school in the Ysleta District to recieve the honor. ROTC was an introduc- tion to the military. It stressed leadership and dis- cipline. Leadership was not only to be used in the de- partment, but personal moral was stressed also. First year students of ROTC, called an S1, learned the basic skills of leader- ship, speech instruction, map-compass reading, marksmanship, ceremonial drills, and first aid. If the student continued they would advance into in- termediate, applied, and then advanced courses. ROTC had at least two days of class work, one day of marching, inspection, and one for improving skills. ! E f 5 E E 3 l 2 E S E 5 l 5 3 .M me ' W M

Yunnan Joe Carillo tutors a student after school. 46 National Honor Society I il j ff Hubert Chin looks for a friend at a NHS NHS had 53 members and inducted new members in the spring. Members were selected on the basis of their leadership qualities, charac- ter, and grades. Even though NHS was an honors club they took part in many extra-curricular ac- tivities. Their activities started even before school did. They hosted a faculty coffee be- fore school began, and they helped out during registra- tion. NHS's biggest event was the free walk-in tutoring which they offered to stu- dents who were having trou- ble in their classes. Two fund-raising drives were held by NHS to help pay for the spring induction and to offer scholarships. ast year we were able to provie two S250 scholar- ships, said Phyllis Brenner, sponsor.
