Captain Baker instructs Cadets with their first aid. 44 ROTC The Hank's ROTC 2nd Bri- gade 6th batallion, consist- ed of all six companies. The Hank's ROTC department had the distinct honor of be- ing one of the top 10 per- cent in the nation and proudly wore the gold star on their uniforms. Hanks was the only school in the Ysleta District to recieve the honor. ROTC was an introduc- tion to the military. It stressed leadership and dis- cipline. Leadership was not only to be used in the de- partment, but personal moral was stressed also. First year students of ROTC, called an S1, learned the basic skills of leader- ship, speech instruction, map-compass reading, marksmanship, ceremonial drills, and first aid. If the student continued they would advance into in- termediate, applied, and then advanced courses.
