,, .55 lnd ustrial Arts students learn safety techniques. One good thing about industrial was that it gave an idea of what work- ing in the construction business would be like. The class was taught by Neal Gris- wold and it involved learning to work with wood and the different electri- cal tools. To do good in these classes it was necessary to have a good imagina- tion and creative abilities. A good un- derstanding of math was also useful. The industrial arts department of- fered general and advanced wood- working, general and architectual drafting and engineering graphic classes. These courses were designed to meet the students interested in workmanship and manufacturing techniques. lt's a fun class to take and it gives you a lot of experience, said Art Car- reon. we 1 g.-X. The Hank's ROTC department had the distinct honor of be- ing one of the top 10 per- cent in the nation and proudly wore the gold star on their uniforms. Hanks was the only school in the Ysleta District to recieve the honor. ROTC was an introduc- tion to the military. It stressed leadership and dis- cipline. Leadership was not only to be used in the de- partment, but personal moral was stressed also. First year students of ROTC, called an S1, learned the basic skills of leader- ship, speech instruction, map-compass reading, marksmanship, ceremonial drills, and first aid. If the student continued they would advance into in- termediate, applied, and then advanced courses. ROTC had at least two days of class work, one day of marching, inspection, and one for improving skills. ! E f 5 E E 3 l 2 E S E 5 l 5 3 .M me ' W M
