Strong runners improve skills Coach Leiman believed that the will to run was the combina- tion of wanting to be faster and wanting a faster team. Track is one of the oldest sports known, every move mi- mics the original flee or fight, one of the necessities of man. You run to things, and run from you, Leiman said. In his eleventh year of coach- ing, Leiman was proud of the girls on his team. Seniors Lucy Ramirez, Becky Green, Christie Flores, junior Chris Fields, and sophomore Tina Dubrule were at their best in the relays and ju- nior Cheryl DeaI's specialties were shotput and discus. The goals of the track team were basically to be healthy and eligible in order to contribute to team success and do well at invi- tational and triangular meets, and most of all to challenge Eastwood. Leiman felt that what basical- ly kept the girls going, was the chance of competing. With all their determination and skill the Hanks girls track team was a tough team to run against. 240 Varsity Girls track team Becky Green practices her strength in her legs. . l Country SS YO C Cross country continues success This year's Varsity Cross Country Team had a wonderful season again. The boys were dis- trict and regional champions and through the season they were ranked one of the top teams in the state of Texas. The seven man team had five returning Iettermen running this yearg two of them were ranked among the top fifteen runners in the state. They really wanted to do well and really wanted to win, said Coach Paul Pearson. Their atti- tude helped them achieve their winning season. Yet it took more than determi- nation to win the district cham- pionship, it took a lot of hard work. Besides running on their own during the summer, the team officially began training in early July and ran every day throughout the season. The hard work eventually paid off since after winning regionals in Lubbock, they advanced to state competition in Austin where they took seventh in state. Overall they won five invita- tional meets, regional cham- pionship and earned a good standing at the state meet. Our hard work really paid off! Thanks to coach Pearson, who really knows what he's doing. We had a great season, said Oscar Nevarez. 242 Cross Country ui V 4 AAYVU '- Oscar Nevarez struggles to beat Bel Air r W Pl' -so 9 ival at the district meet. 1st Row: Rod Ward, Deanna Hulce, Lucy Ramirez, Montie Whlttenburg. 2nd Row: Aaron Aguilar, Joanne Sanchez, Stephanie Bailey, Derena Entwistle, Loran Cannell, Ray Duran. 3rd Row: Art Contreras, David Hunter, Sally Mrowinski, Shelly Fetla, Eric Takahashi, Mlke Miles. 4th Row: Coach Pearson, Rick Larson, David Medlin, David Entwlstle, Wally Fetla, Mike McLain. 5th Row: Russell Bailey, Albert Tarango, Johnny Yzagulrre.
