Track Hanks track proves I promising This years boy's varsity track team was quite promising, and had a lot of new comers. I was very pleased with some of the freshmen, Robert Doug- las, Anthony Robinson, Ed Thomas and Mike Holguin. With them we should have strong fu- ture teams, said Head Coach Paul Pearson. The number of team mem- bers increased this year, making it the largest team since 1983. The team, which was in good shape before the season began, progressed more and more each day. Something that really helped us this year was the joining of the boys and girls programs. Now the athletes get more coaching in technical events which should benefit them. We have a good quality coaching staff, Pearson continued. The team practiced every day sixth period and after school. Promising team members were Victor Alston, Albert Cha- vez, Anthony Dodson, George Fernandez, Howard Prestwood, Gene Thomas, Martin Pizana, Mike Torres, Richard Herston, Mike McLain, and David Medlin. Assistant coaches were Dave McKinney and Ken Bailey. Bailey felt that since this was only his second year on the pro- gram and his first time working with the shot put and discus throwers, it was an experience he wouldn't forget. We have a total of 12 peo- ple, Bailey said. All added greatly to the program. 238 Varsity Track Bart Gaisbauer works on his high jumping technique

Strong runners improve skills Coach Leiman believed that the will to run was the combina- tion of wanting to be faster and wanting a faster team. Track is one of the oldest sports known, every move mi- mics the original flee or fight, one of the necessities of man. You run to things, and run from you, Leiman said. In his eleventh year of coach- ing, Leiman was proud of the girls on his team. Seniors Lucy Ramirez, Becky Green, Christie Flores, junior Chris Fields, and sophomore Tina Dubrule were at their best in the relays and ju- nior Cheryl DeaI's specialties were shotput and discus. The goals of the track team were basically to be healthy and eligible in order to contribute to team success and do well at invi- tational and triangular meets, and most of all to challenge Eastwood. Leiman felt that what basical- ly kept the girls going, was the chance of competing. With all their determination and skill the Hanks girls track team was a tough team to run against. 240 Varsity Girls track team Becky Green practices her strength in her legs. .
