E 3 I- bn .C E en 5 Motivation holds team together Coach Billy Porter had many different strategies to get his wrestlers motivated. One of the most efficient was yelling at them. I had to yell at them to get their adrenalin going, he said. The different strategies worked since at mid-season the team, which had eight returning lettermen, had a record of 3-1. Mike Burr, Richard Montes, and Ernest de Ia Pena were this year's most consistent wrestlers and also team captains. The best mid season individual record was held by de la Pena who was 8-0. Wrestling was a sport which required mental as well as physical preparation. The physical aspect was taken care of during their workouts which usually consisted of 200 situps, 150 pushups, and a two mile run in addition to wrestling practice. The mental aspect was harder to achieve. To win you had to mentally see yourself doing the wrestling moves and you had to block everything else from your mind. You just had to concentrate on pinning your opponent, said Oscar Nevarez. Porter was a coach who really gave his team moral support.
