They were a dedicated team who practiced at 6:30 a.m. and had meets every Friday. The swim team was one of the best in the district. Last year the girls placed second and the boys placed third in district competition. We had swimmers that had the ability to be college and olympic contestants, said Coach Holly Anderson. Four exceptional swimmers were: Gesa Gronert, Johnny White, Tommy Skipworth, and Rob Trendler. They were all on swim teams in the EI Paso area year-round. The swim team found Eastwood to be their toughest opponents. Like other teams in the district, they were affected by the new state laws. Nine swimmers were ineligible for the first six weeks of the season. As the year progressed more and more swimmers became eligible. Next year the swim team will be more experienced and better prepared to meet the challenges of their opponents. lt takes a special kind of athlete to be a swimmerg to it 9 T . . , l t i t ' ,A x as A' 5fffi'if,ws.. i - 1 First row: Jeff Burnett, Rodney Darey Second row: Robert Ortega, David Alvarez, Lee Third row: Tom Skipworth, Jim Ronald, Mike Garcia, Albert Garcia, Fourth row: Rob Trendler, Chip Roberts il9a9a I9,d a a ,.. Ii.- .il- nastics Gym Pa P: i GD L N P Young team I X strives hard This year Hanks had the stu- dents with qualities needed to make the gymnastics team unique and strong in competi- tion. A good gymnast needed a lot of determination to learn and re- Iearn skills. A strong drive to keep going even though you were sore and your hands were bleeding was needed, ex- plained gymnastics coach Rae- Iine Perea. The girls and boys teams were strong enough for state and dis- trict competition respectively. Sophomore Scott Nagao said, All of the team felt confident and they were hoping for the best. Junior Wendy Skipworth con- tinued by saying, Everyone on the team was pretty good. Most of the members were confident in what they were doing. Perea said that she still felt the excitement of teaching a stu- dent a new skill. Hanks has finally come out of the stone age as far as gym- nastics goes, she added. When Perea first came to Hanks there wasn't the needed equipment and the people on the team would not have quali- fied for this years team, if it hadn't been for Perea's dedica- tion to the sport. 224 Gymnastics X ,Reis M . , .
