Erick Williams tries his best and succeeds at the free throw line. Teams excell during season With team spirit at a high level and defense being the important factor stressed, the B-team boys basketball team had their sea- son highlight winning the Bowie Tournament. The team had a lot of confi- dence in themselves this year. Maybe we had to much lcon- fidencej. Not until we were be- hind did we realize that we wer- en't as good as we thought, said team member Fred Mar- tinez. The no pass-no play rule didn't affect the team very much, but it did keep me wor- ried, said Coach Danny Lopez. I think the kids really wanted to play and had a lot of confi- dence in themselves, therefore they worked hard in the class- room to stay eligible. This year's freshman team was inexperienced but hungry to learn, said Coach Kenny Bailey. Their most important achievement this year was the development of team unity and skills. Defense was also their stressed factor. lt's our philos- ophy that defense not offense wins games, Bailey said. ball ei' ask Girls varsity b Determination improves girls composure The girls varsity basketball team coached by Angie Kennedy worked their way up this season to a good position in district standings. Ginger Kerrick, junior, lead the varsity team through many close games, such as the first meeting against Soccoro. Kerrick sat out most of the first half due to foul trouble, but the girls pulled through for a 54-51 victory. I feel this was a total team effort, explained Kennedy. Everyone on the team played and contributed something to the game. Colby Marek, sophomore, and Natalie Nevarez, junior, were regular starters along with Kerrick. The other starting positions were flexible. Seniors Christy Flores, Sharon Osowski, Kelly Skov, and Junior Bonnie Avila were the alternating starters. Kennedy feels this is a young team to an extent, five out of ten players had varsity experience. They were Avila, Flores, Kerrick, Osowski, and Skov. Kennedy recognized Kerrick as team captain, saying that she was an outstanding outside shooter. Avila and Marsh were good ball handlers and Nevarez and Skov were strong rebounders. With all of these strong points the team still had 216 Girls Basketball S if A. g -s -s. Girls show Las Cruces High School who's boss
