Players strive to compete Varsity basketball coach Pete Alvi- drez had high praises for his boys bas- ketball team after they started the long journey to the playoffs. Alvidrez believed this was a senior led ball club . There were five return- ing players, Jay Blackwell, Brad Barth, Brad Borden, Phil Joseph, and Gilbert Menanda. They had plenty of exper- ience and showed it game by game, Alvidrez commented. Co-captains Barth and Borden led the team in the head-on race for sole possessions of first place. With Barth, Borden and Joseph as starters, there were two other slots to be filled. The two other starting posi- tions were occupied by David Kelly and Jai Keys. One of the highlights of the season was defeating Riverside on their home court. The visiting Knights edged by the Rangers with a 52-50 final. Alvidrez was pleased with the win. It was real hard for anyone to beat them at home, he added. Every great team has a soft spot and for this strong team it was re- bounding. Alvidrez explained The players were all good jumpers, but we lacked height as compared to other teams. The shining spirit was slightly dent- ed as they fell prey to the Troopers. Alvidrez could not seem to get his team started in the first quarter. I think ev- eryone was tight and couldn't shoot, Keys said, But we loosened up alot lat- er on in the game. The home team played a great catch- up game but could not come out on top. We just didn't put four good quar- ters together, Keys said. The varsity team started the second round in good shape. As for the rest of the season, Alvidrez stated, With con- tinuous hard work from all our players we should continue to have a good sea- son. They all played the game very well. 210 Boy's Varsity Basketball
