is I l'll'l yTe it l'S Va Tennis swings into action The Hanks Varsity tennis team won district championship for the fourth straight time in a row. This demonstrated excellent abilities in both the coaching and playing. Led by team captains Manny Portillo and James Osowski they savored many vic- tories. This was our best year yet . . . said coach Emma Cal- leros. At regionals the tennis team proved they were the best in EI Paso. Even though they were defeated during the second round by Lubbock Monterey it took them three hours to beat the Knights. I was very proud of the whole team and the way they played. l was especially proud of the number one boys doubles team, continued Calleros. Mike Burbidge and Manny Portillo made up the doubles team which gave the great per- formance against Arlington Martin. The young tennis team, early in their season, enjoyed their victory over the Eastwood team. Defeating Eastwood really boosted their spirits, ex- claimed Calleros. They also kept their spirits up by joking around a lot of the time. Even though the players took their matches seriously they en- joyed being on the team. We have a lot of fun, especially on the bus trips, smiled Ron Reyes. 202 Tennis Q Q2 Amidst the evening sky, Manny Portillo concentrates on his serve

I I'lI'lIS yTe it l'S Va ii 2 The many team injuries didn't af- fect their playing abilities as much as the winter weather did. lt fthe weatherj did affect our playing a lit- tle but we made it anyway, added Vicky Burr. Coach Calleros was really happy with the improvement of the team. The whole team improved 100W and it showed in the way they played, she said. Hanks winning the district cham- pionship was a great surprise to ev- eryone, since Eastwood was favored to win after Hanks lost their top four players. Calleros summed up her feelings by saying, I'm very proud of my team because they don't give up. Among other season highlights was taking second place in the Ysleta Tournament. Although we played tremendously well, we didn't do as well as I expected us to do. But l was still happy with our standings, Cal- leros explained. 2 ! fi ii Y t if ii 3 2: k L . sms Y :wks WXVW H smwmss-www N , ,i t .. t . .5 Q. g t g Q. .,,,Nn.,-sf.-:-- 4- - - is L A K s I 1 S 2 s s . if .L -: , 5 .g , 'Ng' if A E' A' E - .,i ' . ., il .
