I II ba f rsity foo Va Kni hts earn deserved respect A positive attitude gave the Varsity Football Team the cour- age they needed to erase last year's season from everyone's mind. This year Hanks earned a new reputation. This year they were winners. The team's confidence soared after winning their first game of the season. Other coaches were im- pressed with the team, because they didn't give up. comment- ed head coach Pat O'Neill. The team had thirteen return- ing Ietterman with seven of them being starters. The team's miraculous turn-about season from that of Knights of yester- year was due largely to the dedi- cation of the team. Everyone worked hard since spring ball last year, preparing for this season, said Bart Gais- bauer, wide receiver. Under the guidance of new coaches, the team demonstrat- ed prominence and self-disci- pline. The coaches are the great- est, commented Richard Her- ston. Even though they yelled at us sometimes, we knew it was because they cared about us. lt was when they stopped yelling that we worried, Hearston con- cluded. Good coaches, players, and at- tidudes are bits, that when se- perate, were good things, but when these bits were pieced to- gether, as the Knights managed to do, they made a winning team. 196 Varsity Football Combating dehydration, is an important consideration in football. II otba Fo I Var s 'ty Varsity football players worked hard this year to earn a new reputation. However the players received their reward be- fore they even played their first game. During summer practices head coach Pat 0'NeiII present- ed the team with new uniforms that stood out with a touch of eye-catching red. The new armor had red and white stripes down the sides of the black pants and red outlined numbers on the jerseys. There was also a new emblem on the helmet highlighting the school name in red and black. When the Knights charged onto the field dressed-to-kill for their first game against Burges, the cheering crowd no- ticed a change in team spirit. lt's been proven players get a psychological lift when they are wearing a new uniform, ex- plained Coach O'Neill. And what a lift they got! Offen- sive and defensive back David Sims said the new uniforms helped a bunch. Sims contin- ued by adding, When the fans saw the new uniforms, they had a new spirit. Coach O'Neill appreciated all the support the team received from the student body at the pep rallies and games. He also en- joyed the support the team gave back.
