lvonne Aguilar and Jose Alvarez show off their egg babies which were used to study child development. F.H.A. learns life skills Debra Harris chose to teach homemaking because it was the one field she felt there was such a variety. Homemaking benefited all students because we offered so many subjects that were vital to everyday living, she said. Harris said that the purpose of FHA was to build leadership qualities and opportunities at home or at school. Harris would encourage students to take homemaking because she believed they must be prepared for challenges offered in everyday living. About twenty-five percent of my students are male, Harris said. Males are becoming more family conscious. During classes Harris's students learned about sewing. They also studied the child development and family living which brought students to better understand themselves and helped them communicate with their families. They also learned how to cope with family crisises. Harris thought that an interesting curriculum kept the students in her class once they began. She believed that everyone should take homemaking classes in order to learn how to survive. Future Homemakers of America 97 a.1n1 n-.1 woH LU9 V ,io sJaye IJGLU B3
