We made good use of our new-found dig- nity and derived 21 good deal of pleasure from exercising it. As the newness wore off, we wondered what new, exciting events were to COITXG. Then our beautiful, shiny rings arrived. We were vc-ry proud and enjoyed the gleams of jealousy and longing in the eyes of thr- other classnien as they viewed our long-awaited class rings. NVQ: were very successful in our dance which we sponsor:-cl after ll basketball gaine and which added a lot of money to our treasury to help finance the junior Prom. We had considerable trouble pickingaout the best thenw for our Prom, but finally decided on Heaven Sent. We worked lmrd and furiously carrying our idea out in the decorations, hut it was well worth it, for the prom was a wonderful success and we were happy in our achievement. The last exciting event of our year was the ordering of the senior sweaters which are to he red or white with trimming of the opposite color. WVe closed the year with great antici- pation of being seniors, of wearing our senior sweaters, of planning ii senior bull that would out do our successful prom. The students elect their lenders in the democratic fashion, and policies are established and plans torm- nlnted. The student hody officers arrange programs. encourage student participa- tion in school gxffziirs, and promote the general welfare of the school in its broadest sense. The student hotly presidents Bettencourt and Peden have hecn outstanding leiulers. liave had the interest and reputation of the school at heart, and have done all within their power to mise the standards of the school. School spirit is one of the intangibles necessary to a successful institution. Any school would have it when led hy three such gorgeous yell leaders as our own. Helped hy their adviser, Mrs. Dwyer, they have worked hard to create new yells and to increase the enthusiasm of the student body. The Rally Committee, aided by Mr. Buhhnan, has tended to the numerous de- tails that must he taken cure of at any gathering of many people. Selling, tickets, checking on studenthody cards. ushering. helping to maintain order at the games are some of their none-too-easy jobs. EFI tin Sacietas Latina Societas, the Latin club. began the school year with a inembership ol' nineteen, which has since been enlarged to twenty-nine. Latin l students with a semester average of A or B and any Latin Il students are eligible to join. Officers and new members were installed and 'initiated respectixely at an banquet at the Chinese Pagoda. October fifteenth. The initiation which followed the dinner was enjoyed by all-by all the old members. that is. The club was successful in selling candied apples at noon. The apples were prepared by the members themselves, and all who helped had a hilarious time with the apples continually falling off the sticks and hot. sticky syrup dripping on everything and everyone. However, those that bought the apples-while they lasted-declared they were well worth the time and effort spent in maltingg them. VVith Nlr. With meetings once a month throughout the year devoted to planning events and studying Spanish culture. the club climaxed its spring activities with an assem- hly program in ohsei'vanc-e of Pan American Day, April 14th. Frequently outplaying andoutrunning their opponents, the varsity team simply couldnlt rake up the needed points to carry them to victory. ' Though we lost 13-6. our outstanding game of the season was played here with the Tulare Redskins, who won tht- League championship. The Pups scored in the first period on a pass from Nichols to Magota, but on the following kick-off Nluthias, Tulare halfhack and star, ran nearly the length of the ficld to score, Sparked hy the terrific defensive line play of Abe Wicns. Bill Kessler, Cody Parks, and Anthony Jauregui, the Bullpups com- pletely baffled the Tularians. In this gamq Milton Spider', Lewis again injured his shoulder and was out for tho rest of the SSRSOII. 4 4 The Pups put up a, desperate fight against Visalia, butlsucceeded only in tying the score. 6-6. Hut Taylor pulled himself out of second string in this game. and Bob Blakcncy put end runs on the ledger. Eldon Graves's signal culling and johnny Dias's running woift he forgotten, nor will the line plunging of Bill Coe and Dave Mata. But we must remember that carrying the hall can't be accomplished without the support of the linesmen, which included end Don Bettenconrt, center Bud Jacinto, Ernie Kandarian. and Lee Mirviss Qwho has a TD to his crcdit made in the Edison Tech game on tl furnblel. Bill Einbrey, big 220 pound tackle, was awarded a gold football for hoing chosen first string all-county tackle. tHe also was chosen spaghetti eating champion hy Coach Lewisl. Nlerriment seized the entire student body as Happy Holly performed his pantomimes and did his juggling tricks. A Hhopped-up character-no kiddinf Cabel, the magician, amazed everyone with his mysterious tricks, making them more interesting by his request for student assistants. lu December the V olga Troubadors gave a varied program of dances, songs, and novelty effects using puppets. Remember those flirtatious looks, jill? An advertising performance brought beautiful ice skaters to be appreciated by jaekwoh, jill, too, of course. In january Mr. Taber gave his remarkable bird imi- tations, explained how he had gained his unusual ability, and told of his work with the Disney Studios. From now on Disneys little birds will always seein to wear pale yellow trousers-uget it? The end of january brought with it XVhittier's Choir. which gave a prog.grinn of mixed seleetioirswnegro spirit- T:-i uals, religious songs. :incl huinorous znedleys, A very young girl violinist, Miss Mosher, and her young accompanist presented a program to jack and jill and were well received. lt wasnit too highbrow. Hanford gave Xlr. Parkinson a four star rating for his vivid account ol the Customs and costumes of lndin. Cheryl and Maureen became good models. National Assembly sent the Three 'l'rnmpeteers to Hanford on an April morning. A briglit beginning for the dayl As always the prograin given for the benefit of the blind was iinpressive, informative, and enjoyable. jack and jill were willing to dig into their pockets afterwards, Not every prograin is illustrated. For example. the Fiji Islanders with their exotic dances will be well re- membered, Mr. Schwartz gave an excellent talk on Fam- ily Relations, and Dr. Clutslmll an oration on Temper- ance. Our own businessmen had panel discussions on two different occasions. Another rnagzician ended the National Assemblies. jack and jill will readily agree that they approve of programs.
