These men give unsparingly of their time to attend to the many matters of business without which a school coulcl not operate. We would be surprised to know how well-informed they are on school happenings, how much of their own time they give freely to keep our school functioning smoothly. The Prom, held in the latter part of April, was the one big affair sponsored by the class. Under the leadership of Bob Giacomazzi and Ed Raulston, the class took an active part in the school activities in spite of war restrictions. Juniors were prominent on the gridiron and on the courts, as well as in the various organizations, and any plans could not be complete without an energetic junior putting his two- cents-worth in. l.l. With a capacity membership and an energetic president, the Girl Reserve calendar of events was full. There were doughnut sales at noon to finance activities, a picnic and dance with the Hi-Y at Coe's Park, a Chinese dinner and theatre party, and many other happenings which kept alive the club spirit. These-fthingsl are just new Sub-Deb members who are proving their desire to enter the club. Sub-Debs is a club organized chiefly for entertainment and social activities. Their dances this year held a place on the high school social calendar-a Xmas dance, old-fashioned in the use of mistletoe, but modern in dance and music- a St. Patricks' dance in cooperation with the rally committee and to the music of Tony Senna. All play and no work isn't their motto though. From their regular meetings arise donations to Red Cross, charities, Xmas baskets for the needy, and morale building ideas. All in all, Sub-Debs is a nice combination of work and fun, both of which are necessities for young Misses of America. Always a high light of the school calendar, this year's carnival surpassed even its previous records in both attendance and entertainment. The spotlight of the evening fell upon Dr. Satan, a skilled magician, who drew the ad-miration and wonder of all with his magic tricks. The list of the Honor Society activities is interesting and varied. Besides having the carnival, the society gave their formal initiation at a Chinese dinner, and made scrap books for the wounded. They also presented. an original program in the morning assemblies, dramatizing the life of Jenny in music. Being one of four organizations to sponsor a Victory Queen contestant, the Honor Society was responsible for the sale of more than 512,000 in war bonds. Even with this full list of activities, the basic purpose of the club, that of scholastic standing, was maintained by the members. Front row: Montgomery. The proud mem- bers breathed a sigh of satisfaction as the baby club uttered its first word, Will the meeting please come to order? Years pass- ed and the young club grew, each year having a new group of first year Spanish students to watch over it. This year under the guidance of Miss Calleri, the club spent an eventful year. An interesting talk on Mexico by Miss Tervo furnished a setting for the language which was being studied. The club shook with laughter at the Spanish I party as it watched its blindfolded members swing wild- ly at the pinata, dance to the fast Mexican folk dances and play Mexican games such as Deme pan y gueso. Both organizations have been more active this year than last because of the greater emphasis given to sports. Capacity membership was reached by the boys, their opportunity to join the club being based upon participation in sports. The girls increased their membership by remodeling their constitution to allow new members into the club twice a year instead of once. Girls may join the H Club if they participate in school affairs, have above average grades, and have almost per- fect school attendance. Backed by their capable advisors. Miss Roberts and Mr. Anderson, and guided by efficient officers, the Boys' and Girls' H Clubs had a most successful year. l4Il.Sll1I Ll-IH NI'IXGI.l'I 1'1'esifi'iit GIRLS' ll 1'l,l ll-I-'rim' ymw' Vlfnu I'l'i YQ-'lfflv l I'ci t' 'Il 1 i 1lS, l I-'i.imx1f'l1. The Bull- pups had a new and capable coach in the person of Lyle Swenson. Although a quiet person, he put the boys through a hard grind. Some of the returning veterans were Eller, who did not see much action because of a knee injury early in the season, Hinkle, and Bishop, with Blaylock, Vivalda, Cardoza, jesperson, Monje, Mc- Donald all moving up from the B squad. The Bullpups' winning streak started with a brilliant triumph over Fresno Tech. Although this was only a practice game, the Bullpups played an exciting game. The Fresno Tech Wolves took home a zero as the part of the 19 to 0 game. The lights in the Hanford Bowl were on for the first time since the outbreak of the war, for the Tulare game. This being the first game, both teams wanted to finish the game with the higher score. But for almost all of the game, it looked as though neither team would realize its desire, for up to the closing minutes of the game the score was nothing to nothing. But in the last few minutes, Blay- lock shot Bisbing a pass in the end zone, giving Hanford a 6 to 0 lead over the Redskins. Campiglio and Blaylock played exceptionally well although neither made touchdowns. A scoreless tie prevailed during the first half of the Visalia game, but in the second half, the Pups came through triumphantly. McDonald was probably the outstanding player of the Pioneer game. The final score was 15 to 0. The final game with Lemoore proved to be the hardest fought tussle of the season. Most of the playing was in Hanford territory, but the Tigers could make no score. A Lemoore end twice dropped touchdown passes which would have given them the edge over the Bullpups. On the whole our boys did a remarkable job of preventing scores from being made against them. Blaylock, Hinkle, Campiglio, and McDonald played a top game. The concluding game of the season ended in a scoreless tie with the Hanford Bullpups as the League champs. The awards given by the Rally Committee for the outstanding line man and backfield man were received by I-Iinkle and Bishop. And there was reason for this superior look, veterans from last year's team, such as Crawford, Rogers, Layne, Ferguson, Martinez and Cervantes were hack, and the new material was promising. The look was not just superficial either, for the Terriers lost only one game in the league, and it was very close. In their practice game with Roosevelt Reserves, the Terriers found themselves up against a far heavier team. Though the Fresno team outweighed the Hanford players from 15 to 20 pounds per man, our boys put up a game fight. Ferguson seemed to be the spark plug of the Terriers, calling plays and doing a capable job of block- ing and tackling. In the first league game the Terriers again were defeated. The Tulare Papooses showed the results of their longer practice season during the game. The Terriers just couldn,t seem to click, and they lacked offensive punch at the crucial moment. Layne and Ferguson played an outstanding game. The left side of the Hanford line seemed to be weak in this game, but as the season progressed it became much stronger. Before the Terriers played Visalia, there was some debate as to which was the better team. Visalia had a record of scoreless ties to their credit, and Hanford had an inconsistent record of wins and losses. However, the Terriers settled the debate by defeating Visalia 19 to O, Perhaps their best game of the season was with the Cubs of Lemoore. The whole Terrier team played exceptionally well, and the offense and defense were greatly improved. At the end of the first quarter, Hanford was ahead 14 to O, the tallies being made by Raulston and Haydock with Cervantes making the extra points in both cases. The game ended with Lemoore on the short end of a 27 to 7 score. At the end of their highly successful season, the team voted Celaya their most valuable lineman and Layne their outstanding back. Basketball and softball were given back seats for a while, and volley- ball, speedball and hockey, practical- ly unknown up to this time, were given a chance to show their faces. Hockey proved to be a really en- joyable game with everyone finding it a good, fast sport, which offered plenty of thrills and spills. As the warm weather began to close in, hockey sticks were put away and the ever popular sports, basketball and softball, came into the limelight. Individual sports came in for their share of attention, too. These were especially emphasized for jun- iors and seniors as carry-over sports. Tennis classes were organized, and a larger archery range was set up in order to give more students a chance to participate in these ac- tivities. Leaders When Hanford's sons are on the gridiron and basketball court fighting for that extra point needed to win the game, it helps them to lcnow that their fellow students are fighting and betting with them. They show this spirit with lots of good, loud yelling. This year we had some championship teams, whose morale was boosted by three champion yell leaders. Not only did they do all the leading of yells with vim and vigor, but they mixed a little creative ability in with it to give us something new in yell and dancc. Ir will be along time before the picture fades from our minds of Carolyn, Pauline, and Bill doing their famous conga, B-U-L-L-flciclcj, or of Peden giving his own praiseworthy rendition of Cab Calloway,s Hi-De-Hi.
