Glam Sifbsfory In 1931, just twelve years ago, we registered at Camps John Kerr and Virginia Avenue to begin our basic training for the great army of the educated. Our superior officers spent three years giving us a firm foundation for our ad- vanced work through the remaining years. The fall of 1934 brought a transfer to 'fCamp Handley for those of us at Camp John Kerr and a promotion to the rank of Private First Class for all. We were taught the fundamentals of self-government by Mrs. McNally who allowed us to elect a room president who conducted weekly meetings. Three years later a new company from Camp Virginia Avenue joined our platoon and we all attained the rank of Corporal which we kept through Junior High School and our Freshman year in Senior High School. By now we W61'C becoming an important part of the large camp at which we were stationed. New transfers who had received their basic training at other camps joined us on our march and we coordinated like a well trained army instilled with Democratic ideas. At the end of our Sophomore year we elected our competent officers, Tevious Bailey,-Leon Pope, Jane Barnhart, and Dinsmore Potts and were promoted to the rank of Sergeant. From then on we progressed rapidly, overcoming all barriers with the aid of our sponsors, Generals Legge and McCue. The Junior Stand during the football season of 1941 was so successful that we were made Staff Sergeants with no further ado. None of us can ever forget our contribution to the world of drama in the same year, through 'tSwept Clean Off Her Feetf' starring Jane Over, Ren Dutton, Betsy Conklin, Dick Rhodes, Janie Copenhaver, and Bill Pifer. Our production was so Hawless that we were in line for another promotion-T'echnical Sergeants all. 'AV for Victoryv was the theme of our Junior Dance, January 9, 1942 and many considered it the best dance ever given at HCamp Handley. It is no wonder that we were now First Sergeants after such a brilliant success. When Charlotte Meade was elected Editor-in-Chief and Eugene Babb Busi- ness Manager of our Handlian, Generals Legge and McCue decided we should be given the highest rank of a non-commissioned officer-Master Sergeant. The only thing which tended to dull our bright spirits was the transfer of one of our commanding officers, General Legge. He had worked with us through our most progressive years and we hated to see him go, but we took it like good soldiers. In 1942 the need for commissioned officers became grave and we were placed in officers training school for a year of rigid discipline. General Joyce replaced General Legge as HHandlian adviser and we have gone a long way under his leadership. The Senior Dance and Senior Play were two of our successful achievements during our most difficult year of working and playing together. Now we are prepared to graduate as Second Lieutenants, VVe have come up through the ranks, taken special leadership training, and are ready to lead others. From now on our personal success depends upon our own initiative but we are confident that we shall continue rising after the excellent background we have received at l'Can1p Handley.
