We have described the organizations and personalities which have kept it ever alive. It is our hope that we have also, in some measure, Captured the spirit which has given value to our otherwise meaningless activities. But beyond this we cannot go. We have merely set the stageg the memories with which you people it must be your own. age ta xx' f ,S big ?-'wr no k.fv 551: . U D x Q., g Y If I T 4 7 i V 7 X o Q J L- - S, 4. K, Q . DEDICATIO In ll I T H R O ll! R. I. li G G lj In a book whose theme is the Handley campus it is both nat- ural and fitting that the dedication should be made to the man who is responsible for much of its planning and its beauty. Nor are we insensible to the fact that we are at the same time honoring one of the finest members of our facultyfone whose responsibility it is to instruct students in the complexities of modern farming. We feel that he has succeeded not only in teaching facts, but also in instilling something of the reverence for the soil and for growing things which makes agriculture the great profession that it is. And so, without further preface, we take pleasure in dedicating this, the eighteenth volume of the HANDLIAN, to Vlfithrow Reynolds Leggc. Whenever nostalgic melancholy seizes you, turn to these pages and review the brilliant career we have had at Handley. Do you remember our first real public appearance in the Taming of the Shrew in the eighth grade? You will also probably remember the delight with which the shrew , jane Jackson, seized the opportunity of giving Melvin Estes a blow on the head. Since that first play, the class of '39 has demonstrated unusual interest and ability in dramatics. Do you remember how important we felt when we organized for the first time in February, 1937? We elected Mrs. Peery and Mr. Joyce as our sponsors, Ray Robinson, president, Bill Sullivan, vice-president, and Shirley Williams, secretary- treasurer. Activities in the Sophomore year were confined mostly to learning parliamentary procedure, and doing odd jobs at Commencement for the Seniors. In our more active junior year, we elected the following officers: Ray Robinson, president, Tom Whitham, vice-presidentg Shirley Williams, secretaryg and Jimmie Brooks, treasurer. Scarlet and white were chosen as our class colors, with the scarlet rose as our flower. In the fall of '37, we were busy selling hot dogs, candy, and soft drinks at the football games. We sponsored our first party in the Spring of '38. Soon after that we presented the junior Play, Love In Bloom . From the proceeds of this play, and money from our stands at the football games, we financed the most important project in our junior year, The Junior-Senior Prom. This gala affair was managed by a large committee from our class. Before we disbanded in june, we elected our Editor-in-chief and Business Manager for the HANDLIAN. When we returned to school in September, the publishing of the HANDLIAN with all its problems became our chief worry. Then the Senior Play, which is fully described in this volume, claimed our atten- tion. Our class will probably be remembered for its audacity in changing some of the traditional procedures at Commencement. We first dared to eliminate Class Day exercises on Wednesday and the outside speaker for Graduation Night. We obtained permission to have complete charge and be the whole shown when we received our diplomas. The class of '39 has contributed to all phases of life at Handley. Our athletes will be sorely missed on future teams. We have always had our share of representa- tives on the State Literary teams, State Latin and French Tournament teams, and in Lee Poetry and Art Contests. The class of '39 can also pride itself on the part it played in furthering student government at Handley. Isabelle Simpson was our delegate to the Virginia Student Government Association in 1938. Members of our class have been prominent in revis- ing the General Organization Constitution, in organizing the Handley Student Court, and in managing the Monitor System. Although we proudly enumerate our worth-while achievements and contributions to life at Handley, we realize that we have also made mistakes, and missed opportunities. We hope that the juniors who succeed us will profit by our errors, and add still more glory to the Maroon and White. MARGARET HOTT, Clan Hiflorian 52 Class Will Know ye, all men, by these presents that we, the members of the class of 39 , being, we hope, endowed with sane minds, do declare this to be our last will and testament, hereby revoking any former codicils made by us prior to our present advanced state of culture. Through our executors, the members of the lifessaving staff of our swimming pool, we now bequeath: To our sponsors, Mrs. Peery and Mr. Joyce, our sincere appreciation for their forbearance in our many problems, and their invaluable advice which has made our stay at Handley a happy and profitable one. To the members of our coaching staff, Mr. Ochs, Mr. Maddex and Mr. Sargent, a perfect group of managers who will carry out implicitly and to the nth degree both the orders and the unexpressed desires of these mentors. To Mr. joyce, three regular enrollees for his history classes-namely Adolph Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Neville Chamberlain. With the addition of these new children it is believed that the classes will continue and even improve on their daily debatesf To all the swing addicts at Handley, the inclusion of a jam session in our next pageant, at which time all the cats can get in the groove and jive . To Mr. Hale, an insurance policy which will guarantee the success of the experi- ments which he performs for the benefit of the class. In case of failure the damages shall be paid off in two-hour laboratory periods. To the sponsors of the forthcoming senior classes, the right to use all of their power to get indolent members of their classes to do a little toward the goal for which every class strives-to publish the best HANDLIAN ever. To our janitor, Mr. Funk, the grass which shall be mowed from our lawns, in order that he may sprinkle it on the floor of the halls every day before his regular sweeping session. To Mr. Browning, a complete, indexed repertoire of his own and his Angels' accomplishments, with which he may amaze and horrify little girls of rival home-room groups. To the undergraduates, a number of our dignified seniors who shall assume the titles of post graduates upon the beginning of the next school term. To these the lower classmen may come and receive any assistance that they may desire concerning matters of their class. To the pupils in the French classes of Mademoiselle Laughton, an automatic translating machine, by means of which they can at least understand the words follow- ing the phrase: Pour la prochaine fois . To James Brooks, the job as cashier of a large bank. To john Knight, the subtle method of conducting a class meeting which is employed by Scoots Robinson. Mindful of the fact that the fates are unwinding the thread of life, we, the class of 39 , do hereby set our hands and seal this eighth day of june in the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred thirty-nine.
