The new building of Hancock County High represents materialistic progress toward a better education. We can advance spiritually, too, if we use this building to the best advantage. It provides situations for the development of interests to the utmost. Never again in our lives will such opportunities exist. We must use them to our fullest ability. We, the 1962 Hornet Staff, hope that this annual will help you re-live all the challenges, accomplishments, and friendships at H.C.H.S. Co-Editors Sondra Arington Loyd Taylor f XX , f X? ,.44 we ofcafzbn We, the Senior Class of 1962, dedicate this, the first edition of our yearbook. THE HGRNET, to you, the people of Hancock County. Through your undivided interest in the educational system of our county you have made. this school possible. You have done so by giving generously of your time, labor, and finances. The dedication of our annual is but a small token of our appre- ciation for the opportunities which will now be open to us. Q 'L V X ,X- ' ,Lx ministration Superintendent CHARLES F. The annual chronicles our thinking upward to a challenging and historical year in the events of Hancock Co. High School. The academic year of 1961-62 stands out in Hancock County history as an event marking the beginning of new developments. The year marked the comple- tion and occupancy of a new, beautihil, and serviceable Hancock County High School. This has brought to our school system prestige and general confidence through a great wave of public enthusiasm never before experienced in Hancock county. With the new high school, comes an outstanding academic program to meet the needs of our children - the greatest re- source that our community or any community could ever have. Our new school has a wonderful startg the best I have ever known for a program of consolidation. For this, may I ex- press my gratitude toa strong faculty, a cooperative and sup- porting Board of Education, interested parents, and a wonder- ful group of young people with whom I have been privileged to work. Seniors, the first class to graduate from Hancock County High School, as you turn these pages, you will recall many priceless moments and events. Advice and counsel will take on a new meaning and will cause you to be a stronger and richer person. As you go, may you carry with you those high ideals of life and service which have been held before you, and may you be a contribution to the communities in which you live and serve. We want you to know how everything turned out, so we were elected to brief you on the news. We've heard Jimmy Alsop is photographer for Princess Ann. I always knew Jim would get the best. Wonder what title they'll give him? Sondra Arington is now doing private nursing for wealthy bachelors. It seems she got tired waiting for Charles to get out of school! Glenn Hubbard was there and you should have seen him! He has now turned pro- professional bum, that is! Ora Lee Johnson was there and showed us the latest dance rage. She has taken over the Arthur Murray Studios. Jerry Jackson and Jerry Boling have started a line of drive-in restaurants. Maybe you've heard of them. They are called Ierry's. Carol Inman is now working for Warner Brother's Studios as head hair stylist. You should have seen the way she fixed Liz Taylor's hair in her latest movie. William Mason is now Chubby Checker's press agent. He got the job by winning a twist contest. It's a good thing Carl Richards took French in high school. After graduation he went to France because he heard that those French girls really go for Big brown eyes. Ooo la la! Russell Richards is traveling around the world on his million dollar inheritance. His rich uncle died and left him the money and Russell cou1dn't think of anything better to do. Margaret Crutchfield wasn't there, but she did cable us from the U. S. S. AMERI- CA in the Atlantic. She was returning to her husband in Germany after a brief visit in the states. Donna McDaniel brought several of her paintings that she had exhibited in the World Fair. They were bought by the famous art dealer, Donald Gearld Aull. You do know that Donnie is an art dealer in Paris, don't you? Peggy Bruner has just finished her second novel and the critics think it's great. The reviews say she is another Willa Cather. Waitman Butler now has his own combo in New Orleans. They are called the Hornets. They started a new dance rage called The Stinger. Loyd Taylor and Joel Meador always were car fiends. They now have their own drag-strip and fight constantly over who has the fastest car. Carl and Barry Brandle have taken of the S. 85 H. Green Stamp business. It is now B. 8s B. Green Stamps. Don Harrison is head of a construction crew in South America. Looks like Mr. Hall got through to him after all. Larry Gaynor is a professor at U. K. , although he is coaching on the side. It seems he needs the extra money to support his wife and six kids. Dudley Atwell stayed around Lewisport and finally married Dana. He now owns Atwell's Market and is thinking of starting a line of chain stores. Do you remember how well Judy Bruner used to sing? Well, she is now starring in Carmen at the Metropolitan Opera House. Bobby Greer is now the U. S. ambassador to Russia. He and Mr. K. are the best of friends. enzbr GQSJ jjrop ec? COD!! Paul Chambers' guitar playing finally paid off. He appears weekly at the Grand Ole Opera. lt's rumored he replaced Chet Adkins. After H. T. Costello and Bonnie got married they moved to Pellville. H. T. is now marshal out there. Pellville just isn't the same anymore. Janice Coultas married Jerry and they are now traveling all over the world. It seems that Jerry made a career of the Air Force. Charles Hamilton was awarded a gold plaque by the Bell Telephone Co. for making the most telephone calls of the year. It seems he hasn't changed since his high school days. Carl Freyvogle and Sonny Hawkins are playing pro-ball for the St. Louis Hawks. Carl's center and Sonny's guard. At least that's what I think they said. Carole Kruse continued her education and is now a major in child psychology. David Snyder is now a dramatic actor in Hollywood. It looks like those plays in speech really paid off. Jimmie Grant and Barbara have married and Jimmie is now manager of Williams Lumber Co. He is expecting to be made lst Vice-President any day now. Carol Jackson didn't make it to the reunion. Her husband is in the Navy and they are stationed in Antarctica. They would have come but they were snow-bound at the time. Carolyn Keown is married now and working as a private secretary in Lexington putting her husband, Bob, through school. We also regret that J. K. Kennedy couldn't be with us. It seems they sent him to the moon and are still trying to get him back. Jimmy Logsdon is now teaching English back at dear ole Hancock County High. It was a great shock to Mrs. Buck. John Mundy is now the commercial teacher at H. C.H. S. We knew his great typing ability would pay off l The president is waiting to give Donald Nugent a gold medal for breaking the world's cross country record. The only trouble is that he hasn't stopped running yet. Norma Owens was there accompanied by some of her natives. She is now a missionary doctor in Africa. Barbara Powers Atwood arrived in her own private limousine with her Five-Star General husband, Carl. Their chauffeur is Leroy Shultz. We always knew Leroy would amount to something big. Rick Seney is a playboy in Miami. It takes all of his muscles to fight the girls off. We really got a surprise when we talked to Doris Wheatley. We always thought she would marry Freddyg but she is now one of the famous Rocketts at Radio City Music Hall. Have you seen David LaRoche in the movies lately? We heard that he is giving Joe E. Brown competition. Although Miss Ball seemed quite surprised, Dorothy England is now teaching psychology at Vassar University. Because Donna Lamastus was such a fast typist, when she and Johnny got married he decided to let her support both of them. lt's rumored that she is now typing 150 words per minute. The Powers boys - Jerry, Franklin, and Charles - are now running a Dude Ranch in Texas. David Adams is now pitching for the New York Yankees. Whitey Ford is worried to death. The winner of the Indianapolis 500 this year was Dexter Marsch. The amazing part of it was that Dexter wasn't even supposed to be in the race. He made a wrong turnhand found himself on the track. ezzfbr CQJJ jjropgecy COI2f Ray Flake was there in his new car. He still drives as fast as he ever did, but now he doesn't have to worry. I-Ie is a State Trooper. Lillie Estes spent several years after graduation trying to find a job that suits her. She was always quiet, you know, and finally succeeded when she became a librarian. Mary Simpson arrived dressed in the latest creations. She is now a model for Macy's Dept. Store in New York. James Newton and Melvin Clark went into politics. They're both running for the same office. They are now traveling around the country giving campaign speeches. lt's almost another Lincoln-Douglas debate we hear. We've got to close now, as it's almost time for our plane to leave. We're off for a week-end of skiing in Switzerland!
