AC7 r°' PM Oi E. MAIM ST habICOCK OFF EXIT KVWUMNT 1981 VOL. 48, NO. 48. CHEIIOCTON A Letter from the Publisher This 1981 CHEHOCTON marks a first in the history of the 48 years of annual publication. In an effort to off set the massive inflationary costs of recent year books, the student staff, made up of high school stu- dents from all grade levels, interviewed people, wrote copy, designed layed out the paste up sheets, typed the copy, completed all art work, chose the photographs their page placement, took photos at the many events, 6 pasted up the pages in pre paration as camera ready art For those who worked on the year book, there was the enormous pride of accomplish ment, the individual development of two dimensional graphic skills, the frustrat- ion of learning these some what precise skills, all, with the impending pressure of working within the constricture of a deadline. A personal thaikyou is accorded to our advertising staff who provided more pages of ads than in the past; to photographer Bob Ventre Bill Jay Walters of Prestwood for their great in speedy service; to Bob Mc- Fadden of the Taylor Publish ing Co. for his help and en couragement; to everyone at HCS, including, Mr. John Podbelsky, Mr. Wilson, Mr. Revelle, the teachers, and most importantly, to the stu ■dents for their cooperation, i Advisor: Index Coven by Brownyn Biggs Teresa Phillips 2 BUSINESS Mr. J. I trust you will continue to be successful as you proceed through life. One of the most tragic events that occurr ed this year was the unfortunate murder of John Lennon. We can all learn from Yoko Ono Lennon's testimonial followin his death, IN GRATITUDE , when she said: I thank you for feeling of anger for John's death. I share your anger... 1 am angry at my- self and at all of us for allowing our society to fall apart to this extent. The only solace is to show that it could be done, that we could create a world of peace on earth for each other and for our children. If all of us just loved and car ed for one person each. That is all that it takes. Love breeds love. Keep in mind as you progress through BOARD OF EDUCATION Mr. Wrighter, Mr. DeBrescia, Mr. Sienko, Mrs. Faigle, Mr. Mason, Mrs. Geer life, and this will be a better world for ! us to live in! My best wishes to each of you. Sincerely, lyunerintendent 2 ---------------------- —— ■ Business MR revelle : ELEM PRINCIPAL To The Class of 1981: Thomas Jefferson once said, I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past. We are all concerned about the future, since that is where we will spend the rest of our lives! Having worked with you during some of your years at H.C.S., I see an optimistic future. While it has always been popular to point out shortcomings of our young, I do not endorse this for one minute. Rather, I see the strengths and potential of our young adults and the contribu- tions they will make to our country and society. You have much to offer. Hopefully, you have gained some basic tools during your years at H.C.S. which will assist you in this endeavor. In a world which is changing as rapidly as ours, these lessons will have to be up- dated regularly. Lewis Carrol wrote, That's the reason they are called lessons......because they lessen from day to day. As you continue your education, formally or informally, I hope you will also reserve some time to assess your direction. With Respect, Ronald G. We met in high school where he was the dashing president of the French Honor Society. Our first date was to see two young French stewards who used to visit our town when their ship docked in New York. Madame Carleu, our French teacher actively promoted our romance. When we married, this confirmed her belief in 1'amour toujours 1'amour. Jim's understanding allowed me the freedom co go off to France, to continue my studies, to spend hours developing material correcting papers, 6 to fill the house with French books. 1 hope that some of the joie de vivre of our life together has carried over to my students that they too will develop a zest for living. BASKETBALL The J.V. team lost six players from last years team. This year has been a year one could call a learn ing year in that a lot of emphasis has been placed on learning the fundamentals of basketball. It is a team that is loaded with sophmores. It is expected that they will improve funda- mentally so that they will be an asset to the varsity team next year. VARSITY BASKETBALL This years team start- ed the season with only two players having genuine varsity experience. Three sophmores were moved up to the varsity to join four seniors and seven juniors. The team is small but is blessed with good speed, good fundamentals, good shooting. The team lost the first four games to conti a winless streak that b ,two years ago. Finally, the team got it's first victory in the fifth game of the se son and continued to go and improved steadily. The team has worked extremely hard practicing and the game results have reflected the desire and the dedi- cation of the boys. 97 BASKETBALL CHEERLEADERS M.Evanitsky, V.Letosky, T.Hall, W.Shakelton, D.Iverson, E.Mattice, S.Plavnicky, M.Juba The 1980 81 Basketball team was supported throughout a successful season by an enthusiastic cheer leading squad and student body.
