HANCOCK CENTRAL SCHOOL HANCOCK, N.Y. 13783 Seasons are like the cycle of our lives. They start with the birth of spring, advance with the joy of life in summer, mature in fall, and provide for a time of reflection in winter. As the seasons start and end. so do our school lives start and end. We begin the birth of education and learning in kindergarten. We relax with our friends in the summer- time. We also start to mature with wisdom and knowledge about life somewhere between our junior and senior years. Seniors and winter interact with each other as they reflect on the past and look to the future for a part of their lives that’s not yet visible. We. the members of the 1979-1980 Yearbook Staff, hope you enjoy our unique pres- entation of this year's Yearbook. And may the seasons of your lives live up to your expectations. FALL: PAGE 3 WINTER: PAGE 37 SPRING: PAGE 78 DEDICATION: EDMOND MACK The 1980 HCS Yearbook is dedicated to one of the most popular members of the teaching staff. Edmond Mack the retiring Athletic Director. Born in Cumbala. Pa.. Ed received most of his college credits from Kan- sas State University. He first began teaching at HCS in 1959. and since that time has coached football, basket- ball golf and bowling, in addition to his responsibilities as the school’s Athletic Director. Upon his retirement in June Ed intends to spend more time with h.s family (especially h.s young grandson), fish ( There’s this place in Canada where they ALWAYS bite ), and work on h.s golf game. (There are faculty members who will testify that Ed shows no mercy to his golf opponents as it is!) The faculty will miss Ed’s hearty laugh and good sense of humor: we wish him the best of luck and good health in his retirement. Seated: Stacey Plavnicky. Secretary. Mark Skinner. Treasurer. FOOTBALL “It started with the first day of triple sessions and ended with the last day of weight training and agility drills,” says first-year Head Coach Bion- dello, whose Varsity Wildcats ended their season on the upbeat with a hard-earned win against Har- pursville. Perhaps the most positive note of the season was the establishment of standards by the HCS coaching staff concerning acceptable behav- ior of a Wildcat football player. With adherence to these standards, many returning lettermen (Emer- son Trask will be back with a 1000-yard season already to his credit), some new talent, and much hard work, 1980 should be a respectable year for the HCS Football Team. Judy Ellis, Teresa Phillips, and Joni Wormuth. I Barbara Whitney All things considered (injuries to Sue Ott and Debbie Bisbee), Coach Law views the Tennis Team’s 6-2 record a strong one. Unquestionably the brightest spot was Nancy Terwilliger, an HCS junior who placed on the Susquenango League All-Star first team in 1979. Doreen Samp- son and Sue Ott will be lost to graduation in 1980, but the future still looks bright with the likes of Ruby Villaflor, Jenny Hagen- meier, Amy Worobey, Debbie Bisbee, and a much-improved Patty O’Boyle back next year to compliment Nancy Terwilliger. PODBELSKI: SUPERINTENDENT Dear Seniors of 1980, May you continue to be successful as you progress through life. Sincerely, John W. Podbelski Superintendent Congratulations to you as the first graduating class of the decade of the 1980’s, destined to be a new and excit- ing era for the world we live in. May I suggest the following to you as you graduate from high school and face the future. Resolve: To be ready for opportunity when it comes. To rely on your own efforts and abil- ities. To keep in top physical and mental condition. To try again and then again after a failure. To avoid prejudices based on myths and half-truths. To be gentle, kind, and understand- ing to everyone. To feel pleasure in the good of life and to tolerate pain when necessary. To recognize that all is not well with the world and to try and add something to better it. To do the right as you understand the right within your conscience. HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL To the Class of 1980: Being the first class to graduate in the nineteen eighties from Hancock Central School will set you apart from all other classes. While most of your education took place in the seventies, you will be remembered for being graduated in the eighties. I hope this new decade will be one of health and happiness for you. I do not know what the dec- ade of the eighties holds in store for us, but I know that many of you will play an important part in this decade. Remember the sev- enties fondly, but look forward to the challenges of the eighties. I hope you will all come back and visit us often. MR. WILSON: W. T. Wilson High School Principal MR. Wal- ter. “We should be a much more competitive squad compared to last year” says Coach Foster, at the helm of the Varsity Basketballers for the second time. What the team lacks in overall height is made up by hustle and an aggressive, baseline- to-baseline defense. The key returnees are 6'1 Jamie Schoonmaker. 6'1 Ed Juba. 6Frank Passaniti. 5'l 1 Dave Franskevicz. and 5'10 Dave Niles. Junior Eric Walter (last year’s leading JV point-getter), transfer Ed Pearsall, and sophomore point guard Pat Bartholomew are promising underclassmen. The “Wildcat Den” will not be a welcome spot for HCS basketball opponents in 1979-1980. JV BASKETBALL Rarely have HCS basketball fans awaited a JV season as eagerly as they have this year; a fine group of young athletes boasting a history of winning ways will test Susquenango JV waters. Coach Phillips approaches the season, though, with realistic, cautious opti- mism: “Don’t forget — only two play- ers (Bill Gleim and Steve Kane) have JV experience. And inexperience will be the greatest obstacle the team must overcome to have a successful season.” The team (three sophomores and eleven freshmen) has been working hard to live up to its reputation as a winner: continued determination, teamwork, and positive attitudes will insure fans at HCS winning basketball. JV BASKETBALL CHEERLEADERS GIRLS’ VARSITY BASKETBALL Coach Lord, a recent Cortland State graduate, enters the 1980 Girls' Basket- ball job with plenty of talent — many of the girls were recruits from the 1979 championship JV squad. The front line boasts of height and experience (the likes of seniors Sue Otl. Cathy Kravet- sky. and Bev Day). Sherri Drumm — owner of a deadly shot — is perhaps the best athlete on the team. If oppos- ing teams attempt a running game they will not get far because of the speed of Joni Wormuth and Amy Worobey. excellent shooters who are adept at both falling back on defense and lead- ing their own fast break. Look for Var- sity Girls' opponents to depart from the HCS gym with unpleasant memories in 1980. Bottom Row. From L to R: G. Bisbee, A. Worobey. L. Woodmansee. L. Hellmers, J. D’Agali. J. Redzich. J. P. Solstad. M. Peckham. R Whitmore. S. Balaille. A. Gill. Row 2: Coach Woodmansee. N. Murphy. N. Caswell. D. Iversen. M. Evamtsky, C. Matarese. J. Wormuth. Coach Woodmansee realizes she has tough shoes to fill (Coach Brian Dailey, now studying in Ireland, led last year's JV squad to a near perfect season). She has the basketball court sense and experience, though, to help the young HCS girls win time and again on the court. Mary Lynn Evanitsky and Rona Whitmore are two of the best JV play- ers in the league — Rona with her speed and dribbling abilities, and Mary Lynn with her outside shooting. Audrey Wright and Nancy Caswell should log enough playing time to gain valuable experience, as will underclass- men Penny Solstad and Marsha Peck- ham. The JV Girls should be near the top of their division when the season concludes. 45 WRESTLING Coach Law has never fielded a younger team than this year’s Wrestling Squad: no seniors; four juniors (Tim “Torg” Bennett, Charlie Phillips, Kevin Brown, John Grif- fith); five sophomores (Bill Wadeson. Arlu Whitaker, Steve Schoon- maker. Rob Ott, Emer- son Trask); five fresh- men (John Korkes, Dave Reyes, Greg Stuart, Joe Marin, Wayne Biggs); and seventh-grader Gor- don VanLoan. Despite the relative youth of the grapplers HCS oppo- nents cannot afford to be over-confident — Tim Bennett wrestled in Iowa last summer, and the entire team is showing almost daily improve- ment in their skills. The HCS wrestlers will indeed be ready when the referee hollers, ’’Wrestle!” Bottom Row, L to R: A. Badham. A. Bullis, S. Thomas, V. Thomas. Row 2: T. Swartwoul. R. Lewis, W. Biggs. G. VanLoan. S. GIRLS’ VARSITY VOLLEYBALL Coach Wilson knew it would be an uphill battle to duplicate last year’s 12- 4 record; Varsity Volleyball in 1980 had to contend with inexperienced players, a rookie coach, and a late start. One positive note was that most girls logged quite a few minutes of playing time during the course of the season; only seven girls played any game in its entirety. The team’s 4-10 record was not indicative of how close many of the games were; next year should find the Girls’ Varsity Volleyball Team back to its familiar winning ways. Bottom Row. L to R: V. Every opponent in the league but one fell at least once to the Wildcat JV spik- ers. Coach Wilson feels that many of these girls will strengthen next year’s Varsity Team. Bottom Row, L to R: V. The Wood brothers will be back in 1980, as will John Fletcher, all-around athlete Pat Bartholo- mew, and steady-hitting Brad Johnson. A coach who has the knack of getting the most out of his talent year after year. Coach Zawatsky has reason to look forward to the 1980 baseball season. Bottom Row, L to R: B. Johnson. M. O'Boyle, J. Fletcher. A. Matarese. A. Johnson. Row 2: J. Wood. D. Campbell, C. Doherty. J. Wood, P. Bartholomew. Coach Zawatsky. JV BASEBALL “I would have to characterize 1979 as a rebuilding year. says Coach Phillips, himself a standout per- former on the HCS championship diamond teams of the early-I970‘s. After losing four starters to the var- sity by mid-season, the JV Team was basically built around freshmen. Spurred by a defeat of first-place Harpursville. and aided by the return of many under- classmen. the 1980 JV Team should win more than their share of games. Bottom Ro«. L to R: J. Wood. T Wormuth. GIRLS’ VARSITY SOFTBALL Perhaps the statement that best sums up the 1979 Girls’ Varsity Softball season comes from Coach Watkins: “We never gave up to another team.” Strong arms (Amy Worobey, Cathy Kravetsky), lively bats (a .300+ team batting average), and solid defense (Sherri Drumm, Mary Lynn Evanitsky, and Linda Woodmansee) spelled a 7-6 record for the Varsity Wildcats. With the likes of Sharon Zawatsky and Judy Red- zich back for another year. Coach Watkins has reason to smile as she looks ahead to the 1980 season. GIRLS’ JUNIOR VARSITY SOFTBALL Coach Woodmansee was pleased with the hustle and desire of the 1979 Girls' Junior Varsity Softball Team. Bo!tom Row. L Io R: M. Spencer. T. Phillips. R. Whitmore. P. Led by the undefeated (in dual meets) Girls’ Team, fleet-footed runners such as Teresa Gordon. Jamie Whitaker. Donna Tyson. Julia McPherson, and Cindy Geer literally burned up the cinders. The most steady performers on the Boys' Team proved to be Sean Wilson (back again this year) and Kevin Crane. GOLF It should come as no surprise to followers of HCS faculty sports’ history that the premier golfer on the HCS staff also shares his expertise with the HCS Golf Team: Coach Mack, who is retiring this June. The 1979 Golf learn was led by low-handicapper Steve Karcher. with Bob Edwards and Joel Villaflor also contributing streaks of top-notch golf. Youngster Eric Buckley will be back in 1980 as Coach Mack closes the book on his coaching career at HCS. L to R: E Buckley. J. Villaflor. B Edwards. J Burden. S. Karcher. R Peters. P. Taylor. P.
