Memories: Pat, Nile Owl, Friends, D. 50 The Yearbook Staff consists of a select group of seniors. The purpose of the staff is to put together an entertain- ing and fact-filled book of the years activities. The Yearbook Representatives are students chosen from each homeroom in grades 7-12. They assist the senior yearbook staff in the two-week presale of the Chehocten in their particular homeroom. Mr. Stover - Band Director The H.C.S. Marching Band is composed of students in grades 7-12. Their purpose is to compete with other schools during the summer and to entertain at football games by performing half-time shows. They also partici- pate in local parades. 53 The Junior Band is designed to prepare the younger musicians of the HCS student body so that they will be ready to assume a place in the Concert Band or other Senior High Band and Orchestra organizations. In Concert Band the students gain a deep insight into good music by study and performance. Good music comes in various forms and the Concert Band performs light as well as serious selections. Only the most proficient belong to Concert Band. 54 The Senior High Chorus consists of students in grades 9-12. They meet 5th period everyday. They also perform at four concerts every year and sing at all the high school assemblies. The chorus is directed by Miss Garrison. The Jr. High Chorus is made up of 7th and 8th graders. They also assist the Sr. High Chorus at some of their concerts. They are also directed by Miss Garrison. 55 56 Under the direction of Mr. Stover, this select group of musicians introduces different musical styles showing the versatility of music. The Pep Band is an integral pan of each home football and basketball game. They play lively, popular music to get the crowd and especially the players psyched for a victory! The Orchestra is one of the smallest musical organizations at H.C.S. but with Miss Garrison’s fine leadership we learn to work together and develop many skills. This pays off in other activities and we are proud of our musical accomplishments. 57 WHCS, Hancock's own news team Broadcasts the televised announcements every morning. These students and their advisor Mr. Pederson come in early every morning to tape the announcements ahead of time. The announcements include school and sports news, the menu, weather, metric facts, and occasionally a thought for the day. The team also did sports specials, interviewing coaches and team members, to be shown eighth periods. The Philatelic Society is an organization created to allow for the gathering together of those members of the student body who enjoy the virtuous activity of collecting and trading stamps. 58 STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS PRESIDENT: Thomas Elwood VICE-PRESIDENT: Thomas Bronson SECRETARY: Patricia Miller TREASURER: Noelle Tarabulski STUDENT COUNCIL The Council is made up of elected officers and representa- tives from 7-12. This group serves as the link between the administration and the students. The Ski Club is a group of students who are interested in skiing. The students are in grades 7th-12th, they meet weekly during the winter months. The group relates different skiing experiences, discuss ski techniques, and learn about new equipment. During the ski season they take several ski trips to nearby areas and enjoy the cold, but friendly atmosphere of the ski slopes. 60 The members of Library Club assist the librarian and students by working at the desk, shelving books, arranging book displays, and decorating the library. They also have an annual paperback book fair which enables them to donate books to the library. The Hiking Club was organized to get students interesicu -i. oyment of hiking and to promote awareness of our environment and nature. Club meetings are held during 8th period with the hikes on Saturdays. The advisors are Mr. Quinn and Mrs. Baskerville. Is an organization designed to create future leaders by assisting in the girls physical education classes, running girls intramurals, and in general to create inspiration for athletic competition among all girls at H.C.S. 61 The Journalism Club publishes a school magazine, the Spotlight. They also write a weekly column, the HCS Flash, for the Hancock Herald. Under the leadership of Mrs. Lester the students help prepare themselves for a possible journalistic career in the future. The Future Business Leaders of America was organized to help prepare students to take their place in the world of business. Here at HCS, the students type the Flash and Spotlight, prepare the Newsletter for mailing, and learn how to operate the var- ious machines available in the business department. The advisor is Miss Washer. 62 ROW 1, L to R: V. Walters, N. Tarabulski, C. Hunter. M. Gordon, B. Clark, L. Niles, B. Gardner. ROW 2: D. Figura, L. McGranaghan, A. Rillo, R. Ignatovich, C. Conley, K. PODBELSKI DISTRICT PRINCIPAL Dear Seniors of 1977, CONGRATULATIONS to you as you reach this goal in life. Graduation from High School! I would submit the following for you to consider as being as significant in 1977 as it was origi- nally. . . . Our fathers brought forth ... a new nation conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are . . . testing whether . . . any nation so conceived and so dedicated can long endure. With such words at Gettysburg did Abraham Lincoln voice the problems of our nation divided by war. No longer divided by war, this nation still faces the ancient problem: Can a nation conceived in liberty long endure? His- tory provides few examples of democratic soci- eties that lasted. On the other hand, history reveals many societies that remained long and strong under kings and emperors and dictators. Most Americans, bom with the two-hundred- year gift of liberty, accept that gift with little regard to the possibility of losing it by force or by accident. Yet, that loss is possible, for lib- erty is not a concrete statue requiring little care. Rather it is a beautiful yet fragile flower requiring constant attention if it is expected to grow and bloom and reproduce again stronger than before. Only constant care - yours and mine - can insure that . . . government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from this earth. Our bit of Earth is America: we are responsible for it! Best Wishes for continued success as you progress through life! Sincerely, I J John W. Podbelski District Supervising Principal 65 HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL Dear Seniors of 1977: Statistically you have lived between one-fourth and one-fifth of your life. The first seventeen or eighteen years have been compara- tively well structured. As you leave Hancock Central the freedom you have longed for will be a reality. My sincere wish for your future is that you will be turned-on by the right ideals. A serious purpose for your years of life may be in the military, in industry, in business, in one of the professions, or in self-employment. Whatever, your way of life, there should be meaningful concern for others besides your immediate family. Associate yourself in such a way that you have a social com- mitment. If you focus your goals along these lines, you will find many personal and artistic interests that will make your life more ful- filling. If we have given you some of these goals, build upon them. Best wishes for the future.
