STANDING: Mr. Michael Reische, Elementary Principal; Mr. Wellington Lester, High School Principal; Mr. William Wright. MISSING: Mr. William Hartgrove. WILLIAM H. O’NEILL William H. O'Neill has devoted 40 years of service to Hancock Central School District No. 6 as a member of the Board of Education - President, Board of Education - Clerk of the District. On June 30, 1971, Mr. O'Neill is retiring from his official duties. In behalf of the Administration and everyone at H.C.S., Thank You, Mr. O'Neill, for four de- cades of dedicated service and best wishes for good health, wealth, and happiness in the future! MR. JOHN W. PODBELSKI District Principal Dear Seniors of 1971: It was my privilege during this, your senior year, to visit the American Community Schools in Italy as part of our participation in the School-to-School program. Our school is paired with St. Michael's Country Day School in Florence, Italy - a nonsectarian, nondenom- inational, private school that provides an out- standing educational program. I was quite im- pressed by this school and would like to share with you as my message in 1971 the traditional song of St. Michael’s that could be applied as well to our school and any school anywhere: Holy Michael, warrior bright. Show us how to fight God’s fight; Thou, who prince of angels art, Plant Thy courage in our heart. Clothe us with thine armour strong; Help us when the road is long; Be with us through every day; In our work and in our play. Ask our Lord to grant His grace To His family in this place; May His Heavenly wisdom reach All who learn and all who teach. Please protect us with thy might; Help us learn to do what's right; Help us fill our school with love; Help us praise our Lord above. Holy Michael, warrior bright, Show us now to fight God’s fight May we eacn one wortuy De Of this school that's named for thee! My very best wishes to each of you for a life of health, wealth, and happiness in the future Sincerely, John W. Podbelski Supervising Principal MR. LESTER High School Principal MR. Yellow Rose COLORS: Chartreuse and Silver I ■ ORGANIZATIONS The Future Business Leaders of America was organized to help prepare students to take their place in the world of business. Here at HCS, the students type the Flash and Spotlight, prepare the Newsletter for mailing, and leam how to operate the various machines available in the business department. The Journalism Club publishes a school magazine, the Spotlight. They also write a weekly column, the HCS Flash, for the Hancock Herald. FHA provides an opportunity for girls to work on projects that they don't have time for in class. This club is open to all girls, not just home economic students. The Chess Club meets four times per week (two with Mr. Storz and with Mr. Schmoll.) The club is basically for recreational purposes. However, we try to learn the rules of good chess, a game that is good for anyone interested in learning to think logically. A lively rivalry exists among our members. Varsity Club promotes scholarship and physical ability among the athletes of Hancock Central School. The purpose of the girls' leaders club is to learn and exhibit such qualities as citizenship, sportsman- ship, responsibility, a desire to win and ability to lose gracefully, leadership, loyalty, team and school spirit, participation, socialization and a desire to help others. The motto of the HCS leaders club is It is better to play fair and lose than to cheat and win. Our purpose is to make friends with young people from foreign countries in order to promote better understanding between nations - and to have fun doing so. The purpose of the Projection Club is to train students in the use and operation of equipment avail- able in Hancock Central School. As the students become familiar with the operation of the equipment, they will be able to assist the Visual Aids Department and the staff in using these aids. STUDENT COUNCIL L to R: G. The TAP Club exists to find practical ways in which to combat pollution here at HCS and in the surrounding area. The members assist the librarian and the students in a variety of ways: working at the desk, shelving books, arranging book displays, and decorating the library. Their annual paperback book fair is a spe- cial event which enables them to donate books to the library. The High School Library Club is a service organization. Students in the upper third of class scholastically, chosen on character, leadership and service. The National organization is sponsored by the National Association of Secondary Principals. This service organization sponsors projects such as: hall monitoring, and tutoring. The Hancock Central School Orchestra has come a long way this year and the school may well be proud of the orchestra. The organization meets twice per week and plays several times per year at var- ious functions. Musicianship is our goal, and we try to play music that is attractive enough and difficult enough to develop a lasting desire to participate in such groups. One credit is awarded for Orchestra. Chorus meets five days per week. The purpose is simply to learn how to sing well. This is done through performances of all kinds of music. Part singing is stressed and it is hoped that we are producing many future church choir and community chorus members. Chorus is a course not an activity and carries one credit. The Band program at H. C. S. includes three organizations, the Concert Band, the Pep Band, and the Marching Band. Each of the organizations fulfills a particular function, and membership in the or- ganization is determined by the individual's ability to perform at the level of the particular organization. The Concert Band has the most demanding standards of performance. It seeks to encourage each individ- ual to strive to reach his own best level of performance as an individual, and, as a member of the organ- ization, to become acquainted with and perform music of all kinds with a high level of competence. They assist the Senior Yearbook Staff in the pre-sale of the Chehocten in their particular homeroom. Rifle Club is made up of two parts. The seventh and eighth grade members gather during eighth period to learn the basic fundamentals of marksmanship and safety. The High School section, however, consists of a rifle team, which is now a member of the Algonkin Rifle League. This team competes with others as a regular winter sport. ATHLETICS LEFT to RIGHT: D.
