SEA DVA exists not as an engraved portrayal, but as a real and thorough introspection into the lives of hundreds of men. Each photo- graph ,and every word is representative of months of fatiguing work. But the descriptions lack clarity. As the days blend together even light and dark lose distinction. Man's inner emotions, tempered by the monotonous and never-ceasing thunder of the catapults launching the aircraft skyward, provide that intangible sense of such an undertaking. 'How can one hope to reproduce on paper the sweat and sleep- less nights that are the inevitable characteristics of .operations at sea? Who could attempt to express the expectations, the contemplations, the thoughts of home that pass through the mind as the smooth water glides by, mile after mile? The sea becomes a quiet and lonely mistress capable of stimulat- ing mental oscillation beyond description. There were times of relaxation and an occasional exotic port of call. Hong Kong, Japan and the Philippines provided memo- ries that will never be forgotten. ln the years ahead, who of us will not dream of a night in Tokyo or a warm afternoon on a Hawaiian beach? - All these components go together to make up the whole of such an experience. But perhaps to speak of it even as a single entity is to restrict the narrative, to refrain from telling the exact story. Every individual must introduce addendums as only he is capable of doing. This book then is not a point-by-point definitive, but rather an account of general na- ture. Cameras capture a fleeting second, not weeks on end: words convey general impressions, not personal experiences. The soul of each person contains the particulars. With this as a discipline, SEA gl CVA becomes an essay of moments endeavoring to remind the experienced and acquaint the unexposed. The tribulations, the triumphs and the gratifica- tions of a job well done in the South China Sea are far too difficult to depict. '
