We are the men of the Hannah. We live and work within her 44,000 tons of steel. Our job is to use her tremendous capabilities to preserve peace and protect the nations of the free world. We also stand ready to use her powers of retaliation should an enemy attack the United States or one of her allies. During the first part of 1962 we were deployed to the Western Pacific to carry out our mission. This book is a record of our cruise. This is our story . .. This is our 1962 LOG. We left the states on the second of February amidst many tears and sad good- byes. The Hannah steamed proudly out of Alameda and we began last minute pre- parations for the voyage to Hawaii. On the seventh we pulled into Pearl Harbor, debarked our SecNav guests, and prepared for our grueling Operational Read- iness Inspection. For four days we toiled before COMFAIRHAWAH declared us ready to become one of the major units of the mighty Seventh Fleet. Before we left Hawaii there were a few days for some sun on the beaches of Waikiki and tours around the islands. Most of us took advantage of the sun and we left the Harbor of Pearls with pretty good suntans-or sunburns. After a long ten day trip from Honolulu with Air Ops almost every day, we at last sighted the coast of Japan. On the afternoon of February 28th we stood into Yokosuka Bay and tied up at Piedmont Pier for a welcome four day rest. For many of us Yokosuka was our first contact with the orient and most of us found it to our liking. Rear Admiral Blackburn came aboard and we became CTG 77.6. The month of March found us operating as the southern carrier out of Subic Bay. We participated in the SEATO Exercise Q' Tu- lungan, the largest assemblage of ships, planes and men in the Pacific since 1945. The weather was hot and muggy, but when we complained about the heat we were told to relax it would get hotter...it did.
