Time: 2200. Place: Somewhere in the South China Sea. Above decks all is serene. The ship is darkened, the men are turned in after evening prayer. From all outward appearances in the area, the 44,000 tons of Hancock's metal is swallowed up in the inky blackness of a clear star-studded night. Yet below decks the lights burn bright in closed compartments and the office spaces are a 'Jeehive of activity. Records must be kept, and the command's paper work, brought on oy another hectic, problem-iilled day must 'Je brought up to date. From the yeoman, pounding a typewriter Late into the night, to the personnelman making entries in an endless number of service records, the boys in the front office administer the Hancock's men and officers on the basis of thousands of instructions and hundreds of manuals which keep the Navy the same Navy whether it be ashore in the antarctic or afloat in the South China sea. Housing such varied and diverse components as the ear-exhausted Chaplain, the construc- tive work of I and E, the methodical efficiency of Legal, the recognition of PIU, and the peaceful serenity of the library, this department both directly and indirectly influences the most precious thing an American Fighting Man can have ,... his high morale. Here is where the proper advice is given to those who make the decisions to effect the policy which will bear on how you think and the way your spirit moves. MI I TR TIO
