On the 2nd of April we found our way through the fog into the most fantastic harbor in the world, Hong Kong. For seven rainy, wonderful days we wandered through the streets and back alleys of this last free port in the west. All too soon our week was gone and we slowly ma- neuvered out of Hong Kong, broke, but with our lockers crammed with the bargains we had made. Next it was back to the Philippines and more operations. During April we broke virtually every record for air ops on Han- nah,s books. The weather was hotter and, if possible, muggier. We began cross deck operations with the British Carrier Ark Royal and the Australian Carrier HMAS Melbourne incident to our operational com- mitments. In May we were relieved as southern carrier and gladly steamed north to Yoko- suka. Admiral Blackburn shifted his Hag to the Midway and Captain Blesh assumed command of CTG 77.6. We had a week's time to explore the mysteries of Yokosuka and Tokyo before heading back to sea and eventually our next port of call.. .Kobe After Kobe, Rear Admiral Booth, COM- CARDIV 5, came aboard for five days to couduct an exercise with the Ark Royal affectionately called Q'Potluck. We had a visit from COMSEVBNTHFLT, Vice Admiral Schoech, and Under Secretary of the Navy, Faye, who flew aboard for one day. Due to a last minute sked change we even got to see Okinawa, . . . and Greenbacks again. We stayed in Buckner Bay for four days then went back to work patrolling the sea off Okinawa. We visited Iwakuni in July, and in the first week of August set course zero-niner- zero from Yokosuka for. . . HOME. I
