' ' ' ' -41' ., .if Coming off back-to-back 7-4 seasons, Hampton Institute Coach Wal- ter Lovett has restored the Pirate's football fortunes and has developed the team into a contender for the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Asso- ciation CCIAAJ title. But there is plenty of reason for Lovett to be cautious when evaluat- ing the 1978 team. Although 59 lettermen return, 13 seniors were lost from the 1977 squad including 10 starters. Four starters were lost from the starting defense that held five oppo- nents to less than eight points. Most prominent loss will be defensive end Reggie Doss. XA seventh round draft pick by the Rams, Doss earned All-CIAA, first team NAIA and Little All-America honors last year. In addition, five defensive backs graduated leaving only one experienced starter. On offense, record setting quarterback Russ Seaton and his favorite target Reggie Midget are gone along with a trio of starting offensive linemen. Lovett expects the 1978 Pirates to exhibit a more balanced offense this season. Option quarterback Jenson Baker is btling talented Tony Boone for the starting position. High school teammates fAnacostia H.S., Washington, D.C.j Eddy Pratt and Buckey Gordon should man the wide receiver positions with Larry Williams at tight end. A plethora of talented running backs including halfbacks Donnell jones and Lewey Hale and fullbacks Howard jackson and Carl Turner give the Pirates strength and depth in the backfield. Lovett has turned his recruiting energies toward rebuilding the undermanned offensive line. Leroy jones K6-4, 2255 and Frank Giles Q6- 3, 2853 will be the bulwarks of the offensive line along with Victor South, who set out last year with injury, will start at tackle. The defensive line, which limited five opponents to less than 50 yards rushing, returns three starters. Arrowhead Ernie White 16-8Vz, 3021 anchors the fine defensive line that includes Brod Hauser 162, 2205 at noseguard and end Darryl Grant C6-4, 205j. The linebacking position is questionable with only Calvin Felton returning. Newcomers Mark Mason, Alan Hinton or George jones may also be called upon for starting duty. The defensive backs corps were stripped by graduation, leaving sen- ior Don Rose as the only returning starter. In addition to winning the NAIA District 19 title, a share of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association CCIAAJ Northern Division crown and advancing to the finals of the CIAA tournament last year, the Pirates set a school record with 24 wins. And with 12 lettermen returning, hopes run high of repeating last year's record-breaking season. Only starting forward Tony Threatt 17.5 ppgj and substitute Perry johnson 62.4 ppgj were lost to graduation. Consensus All-America Ricky Mahorn Cpronounced Mi-hornj is the top returnee. The 6-foot-10 forward averaged 24.0 ppgnd 12.6 rpg and led the Pirates in 11 offensive categories last year. He was selected to no less than eight All-Star teams including first team All-NAIA, All- CIAA, All-State and Associated Press All-America to name a few. At center, Marvelous Marvin Payne, injury free at last, appers ready to return to his sophomore season form when he averaged 21.2 ppg and 15.0 rpg. The 6-9 senior suffered chronic knee problems last year. All-CIAA forward Keith Tolliver was the squad's second leading scorer 116.83 and rebounder f9.9j last year and returns to the strong for- ward spor. Outstanding outside shooter jack Duffin, converted guard Dave Sippio and Henry Sherman, who missed last year due to injury, will battle for back-up positions. At guard, flashy Darryl Warwick and steady Pete Peters have the inside track. Warwick impressed opposition coaches with his ball han- dling abilities and shooting skills. The vastly improved Peters earned a starting position last year on the basis of his consistent performances and team leadership. Capable Wilbur Ricks, who can play either point or swing guard, is waiting in the wings. Defensive whiz Richard Taliaferro and a duo of juniors: gunner Ricky -Iarvis and talented Tony Sherman are capable performers. Last yearls 24-7 record marked the first winning season for the Pirates in 10 years.
