Secretary - Treasurer SENIOR CLASS SPONSORS Mr. Briggs Miss MMIII Mr. Davis Mrs. Dirks Mr. Cheeley Mr. Messerly I-I IS-I-Q IQY CLASS of I95O September, 1937, our parents shoved us off onto the school, which then consisted of coloring, drawing, and napping. Little did we know that this schedule would quickly change. We provided our own musical entertainment by organizing a Kiddie Kaper Symphony Orchestra. The high- light of the year was a Hallowe'en party to which we came attired in grotesque costumes and carry- ing jack-o-lanterns. In first grade the class members put their little noses to the grind stone. The milk and grah- am crackers had disappeared with the sleeping rugs. We read the adventurous novels of Dick and Jane, Winkum, Blinkum, and Nod, and Nip and Tuck. Cleanliness was preached and all nails were supposed to be clipped, filed, and cleaned, also the ivory choppers were inspected by the school marm daily to see if we had taken the IPANA workout. We were little candle makers in second grade and Mary Whitney still retains the formula and procedure that we developed in the basement art room. Jim Stauffer and the Lambert boys sat pantless in the classroom while Miss Strasser draped their snow-dipped trous-ers over the radia- tors. The Dark Ages seemed to return during the third grade, because that was the year of the be- ginning of World War II. In fourth grade we little angels had Miss Tom- kins who was visited daily by her suave suitor, Mr. C. E. Thomas. They later married and lived happily ever after. New arrivals were Marlene Carter, Kenny Wohlford and Jerry Davis. Wil- bur Kenison carried on a mad love affair with Bonny Allen. Miss Budlong and Miss Chadwick tried to hold us down in fifth grade but we were in the ram- bunctious age. The boys still pulled Martha's pig- tails and shoved the other girls down the icy hill, Nancy Libby retaliated by knocking out two of Moo Heins' teeth. The East Side gang with Generals Harrison and Schuler was reinforced by the West Side mob led by Commandos Botts and Rose. Mrs. Beemer, Mrs. Mueller and Miss Dunaway widened our hori- zons and shoved us higher up the ladder. Irene Welch and Dwight Harrison were frequently seen in public places togetherg and Rev. Ivan Davis married some of us behind the Franklin building. These marriages were quickly annulled when the teachers got wind of it. Virginia Spear, Bob Sca- lise and Felix VanLaere joined us which made the class almost complete. 15 We were now fifty-eight strong and in 2 strange, fascinating world. We suddenly began to grow up physically and mentallyg the girls clipped their pigtails and the boys slicked down their domes, with the exception of Moo Heins. Young love sprouted, and we went to our first dances which resembled Quaker meetings-the boys on one sideg the girls on the other. We were on the path that would widen into the road to success. The eighth grade was an advancement, but we still had fun and frolic, also the Board of Per- suasion and copying sections of the Webster Dic- tionary were punishments for misdeeds. We snatched onto eight new members before the day of graduation which thrilled us and our proud mamas and chesty papas. At the beginning of Chapter 9, Robert Butt, Wally Whipple, Ordean Freeze, Norman Barnes, and all the other farmers joined the caravan. We worshipped the seniors despite the irritating ini- tiation and longed for the day that we would occu- py their positions of eminence. Four of our girls came into the Pep Squad to help back the Cham- pionship football team and the near-champ bask- etball team. Time was running out unnoticed by us as we hurried from one thing to another. As Sophomores we sponsored our first mas- querade which later became our Mardi Gras Ball. Mr. McCoy and the music department presented the first variety show that was well attended and much enjoyed. Peggy Durham, the red head from down Texas way, thrilled the male faction of the school-young and old-but she went south with the birdies that fall, gone but so well remem- bered. Also. 1948 is memorable because at this time General Luke Thompson answered the call of his country. Later Dean Dovey and Billy Rose donned the khaki uniforms. We were half-way through our high school when we reported as juniors. We struggled thru English III and delved into bygone days in Mr. Jacot's history class. Mavis Miller, another red- head, replaced Peggy of the year before, and we were blessed with the arrival of the new princi- pal, Mr. Davis. The junior class play was Home Sweet Homicide, andithe theme of the spring piom was an almost realistic evening in the jun- gle. We are now at the top of the pile, but we don't feel nearly as majestic as we anticipated. Maurie Wolf and Miss Schoenfeld played bumper cars on main street and other incidents have drawn our attention. We don't know the title of the result, but some people call it a graduate. We are shoved out into the world like little puppies out of the home kennel. ILL shovel and you haul awhile, PRES!-IMAN INITIATION and MIX This page is a sorrowful dirge dedicated to our under-privileged freshmen. The resounding wails of the wary newcomers on the mourning of September 27, 1949, echoed resentfully through the halls. The belligerent seniors delighted in towering over the bowed forms of the prostrate freshmen. At noon, a few of the lil' ones succeeded in scrubbing the irritating dried paint from their de- jected faces, but upon returning to their fate, they couldn't escape the clutches of the honorable up- per class men who swabbed a fresh deluge of that irksome green paint on them in preparation for their debut. The major contribution toward the after- noon's program was a display of talent emerging from the gifted freshies. Star attractions proved to be the explicit barker who guaranteed the awed spectators that they'd see twice as much on the inside as on the outside g and as the robust Tar- zan leaped daringly from desktop to desktop, he emitted his famed challenging call of the deep, mysterious jungle. After an eloquent wedding ceremony, which concluded the afternoon farce, the relieved kiddies picked up their scattered b?0kS and belongings and toted them wearily to c ass. ' That evening told a different story. Every- body, the freshmen included, was resplendent. The girls in their gayest silks and satins and the boys in their brightest ties and starched white collars. The freshmen fellows, unaccustomed to feminine accompaniment, were being unusually and self-consciously dignified. The program began with the Master of Cere- monies welcoming everyone. He told us that a few people, new students, and new teachers who had escaped the Hampton Initiation Program, would now be put through their paces. A few sin- ners, underclassmen and teachers, who had tried to muddle the innocent freshmen by saying they, too, were seniors to be obeyed, would also display their talents before the critical audience. After introducing the participants, our show was put under way. Mighty Mott, using one ofrhis famed holds, with the aid of Miss Schoenfeld, demonstrated the intricate sways of the rumba. After being blindfolded, dainty Dudley gulped down the peachy goldfish, which we are sure added a trill to her warbling voice. Of those who had sinned, Kapable Ken and Senseless Schipper passionately portrayed 'a mo- ment of enchantment dancing to the intriguing melody of Old Man River sung by Georgeous Gutzie. l After the program, we had the traditional handshaking ceremony. Several of the seniors, who delighted in rubbing it in, sneeringly asked forgiveness from a few freshmen whom they had unmercifully abused. . Then lunch was served by the seniors to give everyone energy for the destruction, by pulling down and breaking, of the four hundred balloons the seniors had laboriously blown up and hung from the ceiling. In reality, this wasn't such a. great catastrophe, because it did a marvelous Job of ice-breaking and helped to start the dancing in a gay mood. But seriously, we seniors sincerely hope that you freshmen enjoyed the Mix as much as we en- joyed initiation day! 24 uunocs wm coursnfncf rlL1ooQQQiYW-W5 Wfgena Ulllilw' o ' V 3 mom :own rms enum B W WN 'W 2 QW an Botts sto AA Hamgffm ju .WN 'I '-' f T5E1-hnn- d---mfr M. President Vice President SGCDGTHFY-Treasurer Ivan Davis Georgena Callahan Nancy Llbby The Hampton High School Student Council is composed of twelve home room representatives and the four class presidents. At their first meet- ing the council elected their own officers to rep- resent them throughout the year. The council elected Ivan Davis, president, Georgena Callahan, vice president, and Nancy Libby, secretary-treas- urer. The purpose of our Student Council is to dis- cuss any problem which arises in our school and to take action if found necessary and also to pro- mote better relations between the faculty and stu- dents and between students themselves. The Student Council is taking a more active part of our school life by sponsoring many activi- ties. The Student Council promoted the sale of activity tickets, sponsored a Soc Hop dance after the game on November 14, 1949, and also decorated the Christmas tree in our high school assembly. One of the larger jobs the Student Council undertook was to supervise a tour of the Hampton junior high and high school buildings for the benefit of the East Side P. T. A. The coun- cil represented the students in deciding whether they wished to organize a monthly teen-age party at the American Legion club house. Our council took an active part in Student Council work outside of our own school. We sent Ivan and Georgena to represent us at the state Student Council meeting at Marshalltown. Nearly all of our council represented Hampton High at Iowa Falls at the Conference Student Council meeting. Jim Jorgensen and Don Krukow met with other representatives at Eagle Grove to form a constitution for the Conference Student Council. 29 JUNIOR PLAY Our Hearts Were Young and Gay Presented by Junior Class of 1949 Billy Miller .................................................. ED lane Harrison The purpose of the Pep Squad is' to promote good spirit and pep among the students of Hampton High, The organization con- sists of six members from each class and six cheerleaders. They are elected into the Pep Squad by their fellow classmates for two years. At the end of this time they may be elected for two more years or some one else may be elected to take their place. Up until last year when girls were elected into the group, they were in for all four years. Now, they have the election on a two year basis. A girl must maintain a c average in her academic sub- jects in order to remain in the Pep Club. Our six cheerleaders are elected by the whole student body. The organization is in charge of the pep meetings. This year other organizations have helped the Pep Squad put on skits for our pep meetings. The Pep Squad has uniforms of red skirts, black sweaters, and white blouses. The group has its own traditional song, and oh how they love to sing it! This is a very lively group with many activities. Some of them include an annual Christmas party, pot lucks, and sponsor- ing dances after games. The Christmas party is their dressy party of the year. The pot lucks are very informal and enjoyed by all. The cheerleaders have done a splendid job in leading the yells for the football and basketball games and wrestling meets. The Pep Squad has tried to create better school spirit and hopes to be able to maintain it in the years to come. A long winding parade of what looked like stu- dents, but yelled in some strange tribal chant, could be seen winding their way through the usu- ally quiet streets. At last the group halt-ed on a large dark field behind the school house. Suddenly a large bonfire burst into flame and a body was tossed onto it by several boys. The crowd again broke into strange chants and at in- tervals a silence would fall and individuals would talk a few moments and then the voice of the mass would surge up again. What was this strange thing? It was the tra- ditional snake dance held the night before Home- coming. The chants were cheers led by the cheer- leaders, the individuals were the coaches of Hampton High, and the body was a dummy rep- resenting Algona, the opponent for tomorrow's game. As the fire burned lower, a poemf written in tribute to the football team and coaches was read and after a few more yells, everyone went home to get a good nights rest for the coming fracas. Well, at speech making, folks, I'm just not very gabby, But was caught unaware By our friend, Phyllis Grabbe- Who asked me to come To this bonfire tonight And say a few wordls On the coming dog fight. The Algona High School, So I am told, Call themselves- Bulldogs, Daring and bold. They growl and they bark With fire in their eye! But our Hampton Bulldogs Th ' lti l ey can t even e For 'boys like our Jerry, Our Dean and our Dwight Can gobble them up In one good-sized bite! And Dog-Trainer Cheeley Is the best in the lot, Helped by Brunsvold and Hasson And Siekman and Mott. So I think we're all set For a Wow of a fight, And will send them home howling On Homecoming Night! By Miss Conyers Friday afternoon there was another parade led by the band and cheerleaders. The team and the coaches rode in the back of a large decorated truck, the, queens rode in convertiblesg and the students, accompanied by their sponsors, followed in more or less orderly ranks. The parade wound around the streets and was broken up for cheer- ing at a main intersection. It was a perfect night for a gameg and the day had been warm and golden and glorious with autumnal colorsg the evening was clear and star- lit with just a touch of coolness in the air. The team had n-ever looked 'better than as, in their new scarlet and white uniforms, they went through their warm-up exercises. A gigantic cheer followed them as they left the field for a few last minute instructions from coach, and again swelled as they returned. In spite of several more or less seriously in- jured men, the Hampton team was in good spirits: they were out for a victory! The first half was exciting with Hampton in possession of the ball most of the time. The Bull- dog eleven left the field amid cheers-they were ahead 6-0 and intended to stay that way. During the half, the Hampton High Band marched out onto the field, and awaited the arriv- al of the queens, who came in convertibles, and were then escorted to chairs placed in the middle of the field. Mr. Briggs announced the queen, Georgena Callahan, and presented her with the traditional bouquet of red roses. He pinned strik- ingly lovely autumnal orange colored corsages on the four attendants-Norma Polk, Mavis Miller, Delores Guldberg and Martha Doeringsfeld. A musical program, including a ballet by four high school girls, was then presented by the band for the queen and her courts' entertainment. The Hampton boys came out onto the field, amid cheers and the strains of the Hampton High School Song, rested and ready for the second half. The team continued playing the same brand of exciting, hard to beat ball the second half Pncl as the game ended, amid jubilant shouts, the score stood 12-0. After the game, the annual Alumni Homecom- ing dance was held in the high school gym which had been decorated with the '49 Gold Rush as the theme. The Homecoming queen was crowned by the football captains, Don Heins and Ralph Bockel- man, and led the grand march which opened the evening dancing. All in all, we're sure the 1949 Homecoming was the best yet. 52 ww? .NWA BASKETBALL . - l --'A W' ,49 YW r 4 ' L I E QA , ml- X J wasnt rusamson KA sw Q52 x 5 X K 'lx Pmn. After suffer- ing five close defealts, a spirit struck the Bulldogs and theywent on to have a nine game wlinning streak only having it broken by the League-leading Lynx from Webs-ter City. ' Probably the highlight of the season was the Conrference Tournament. Hampton met 'powerful Webster City in the first round at Iowa Falls. A determined scrappy outfit came out on top, 27 to 22. T-he next round was held at Webster City. The Bullldogs faced another one of the top teams, Humlboldft. T-he crew was up to true form and downed the Wildcats, 40 to 37. 'Hampton was to play in the finals, something the boys had really worked for. Algona, also one of the top three teams, was the other finalist. A close hardlfought game ended, 41 to 35, with the Bulldogs the winners and Tournament Conference Champs, a title which Hampton has never had before. Anoltlher trophy was added to the trophy case when Hampton defeated Clear Lak-e and Svt. Jose-pnh of Mason City in the lsectional at Sheffield. This put Hampton in the district.
