Kathleen Mayes, HHS's representative in the l Speak For Dem- ocracy Contest. I0 Last summer, eighteen iuniors represented Hampton High School at the Virginia American Legion Boys' and Girls' State held at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. In the course of a week, these seven girls and eleven boys learned the fundamentals of State and city gov- ernment. They adopted charters in their cities, and ran the city under the leadership of their mayor. l Later in the week the two political parties, the Nationalists and the Federalists, nominated candidates in the State conventions to run for State offices. After many political rallies and the election, the new Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Attorney General were inaugurated with appropriate ceremonies. An inaugural Ball at Radford College climaxed the week's activities.
