MISS ELSIE GAY LANE To The Seniors: As Sophomores and Juniors, you were primarily occupied with the present. As Seniors, you find some sadness in the thought that you will not pass this Way again. We hope that while you were here, you learned to think Well and choose wisely for tomorrow you will be the backbone of our strength as a nation. You leave behind many friends who will always be interest- ed in your happiness. Elsie Gay Lane 30 ! was . f President X Semor Class Officers Raney Turner Vice-President John Ellerson s! Jw sf f Q X I V H r....... Secretary Treasurer Pat Carmines Molly Riggins 31 Prophet, Patsy Mackeyg Giftorian, Beverly J acobsong Last Will and Testament, Sylvia Verdery Poet, Carol Livingstoneg Historian, Chick Kerlin. Class Day activities are capably handled by our Senior Class Historian, Last Will and Testament Committee, Poet, Giftorian and Prophet. The Historian has the task of Writing the history of our three years at Hampton High School, from the time we entered its hallowed halls in September of 1955 till we sadly leave them in J une, 1958. Our Last Will and Testament, in which We leave a favored desk or teacher to a special friend, is an equally hard job, as, each year there are more and more seniors to graduate. Poet laureate of Hampton also requires a lot of work, for the class poet tries, with rhyme, to eulogize his or her class for posterity. The Giftorian attempts with a few words and ra small gift from the senior cl-ass to show our appreciation to our sponsors, to the school and its faculty for all they have done for us in the past three years. Our Prophet attempts to visualize what we seniors will be doing about ten years from now. Some are amusing and some are serious but almost all are astonishingly close to the truth. Thus, you see how enormous a job these hardworking people do to make Class Day a success for you. 32 ASTRI ALICE AASLAND CHARLOTTE DESPER ADAMS DENNIS ofrfro ALLISON GLENDA JEAN ANDERSON JOHN MELVIN ANDERSON MARY MARGARET ANDERSON JOHN CLARK APPLEBY LEROY FRANCIS BAISDEN w I il F MARGARET ALMA BARNHILL JEWEL NIXON BARNHOUSE CARL LEE BARRACK ? Peninsula Champs The Red and White closed out a highly successful season by turning a gray Thanksgiving into a black one for Typhoon fans and a bright one for Hamptonians. Reason? Hampton 20 - New- port News 0. With Bud Porter, the brightest star of all, leading the attack, the Crabbers literally ran Newport News off the field. Not only didithis even the long series, but it gave us the Penin- sula Championship after a three year reign by Warwick. The'Crabbers opened the season with a convincing 39-0 win over Benedictine. This game marked the debut of Jimmy Eason, who on his first play from scrimmage tossed a 41 yard touch- down pass to Bud Porter. Showing a balanced attack, Hampton, led by Danny Bridges, rolled up 245 yards on the ground and another 117 yards in the air. The following week Hampton traveled to Chester and shut out a stubborn Thomas Dale team H.H.S. H.H.S H.H1S H.H.S H.H.S H.H.S Benedictine 0 Chester 0 Maury 12 Mt. Vernon 12 Wilson 20 Granby 13 26-0. Bridges scored twice and booted two extra points to boost his total to 23. Jimmy Stout scored the other touchdowns on passes. Keeping their slate clean, the Crabbers rolled over Maury 39-12. This game marked the first touchdowns allowed by the Red and White's rugged defense. For the sec- ond straight week Bridges and Stout scored twice. Bridges also converted three extra points to raise his point total to 38. The Mount Vernon Majors were the next to try 1 H-H-S Warwick 13 their hand at stopping the mighty Red and White. H-H-S N0I'VieW 19 Starting fast, the Majors broke into a 6-0 first quar- H.H.S. Newport News 0 ter lead. But three touchdowns in the second quar- ter and three more in the last half by the Crabbers dispelled any thoughts of an upset. Richard Nobles 150 Q sparked the attack with two long scoring runs. Bridges, Porter, Ellerson and Edwards also scored for Hampton. Winners of four straight, the men of Suey Eason traveled to Portsmouth to meet undefeated Woodrow Wilson. Because of flu and injuries to key Hampton men, Wilson was rated a heavy favorite at game time. But Hampton made the sportswriters look just as wet as the gridiron by blasting their way to a 20-7 halftime lead. Ellerson, Nobles, and Porter scored for the Red and White and Bridges kicked two extra points. His third try hit the goal post and bounced away. A combination of flu and fumbles aided Wilson to two last quarter touch- downs and enabled the Presidents to pull out with a tie. Bouncing back from the tie, Hampton ran all over Granby 40-13. Jimmy Eason scored three touchdowns and passed for another to lead the rout of the Blue Comets. Porter, Ellerson, and Bridges scored the other 'Crabber TD's. Bridges scored 10 points to raise his point total to 58. Next was the big homecoming game with War- wick. The Farmers started out as if they were go- ing to spoil everything by beating us for the fourth straight year. In fact, they carried a 13-6 lead into the fourth quarter. Then Bud Porter broke loose with two long runs for scores and Eason added an- other. Final score: H.H.S. 27 - Warwick 13. Still undefeated, the 'Crabbers traveled through the new tunnel to Norview to help them celebrate their homecoming. To make a long story short, Norview had a happy homecoming. The fired-up Pilots handed Hampton their first loss 19-7. Danny Bridges provided the only bright spot for Hampton by plunging over for a touchdown and kicking the extra point to stake Hampton to a short lived 7-0 lead. Then came Thanksgiving and the big win over the Typhoon. Co-captains Bud Porter and Danny Bridges, John Ellerson and Jimmy Stout closed out their high school careers with brilliant perform- ances. Porter scored one touchdown and passed for the others, one to Stout and one to Eason. Bridges kicked two extra points and combined with Stout to tear up the middle of the Typhoon line. Ellerson turned in his usual fine offensive and defensive game. 151 Ellerson grabs pass against Norview Stout tries hard against Presidents. . 'Vff me ' Bridges picks up yardage in Benedictine game.
