This year a new club has been added to Hampton High School which increases the knowledge of science, particu- larly Chemistry and Physics. It also offers an opportunity for students working alone or together to experiment and develop scientific projects. Interesting lectures are deliv-r ered by members of the Engineers Club, scientists from N.A.C.A. and other persons dealing with science. Many field trips are taken by the club to observe science in action. Its chief aim is to be of service to our school, community and nation. By stimulating a greater interest in science and its study, we hope to encourage youth to make science their chosen career. The choir quickly mastered enough selections to present a con- cert early this season. In October, a trip to Richmond to sing for the Superintendents QVEA Conven- tionb brought the choir statewide recognition. Upon their return the 33-voice group began rehearsing for a Christmas opera. Amahl and the Night Visitors was probably the most difficult opera attempted by any choir at Hampton High, and featured as soloists, Patsy Anne Scott, Nancy Savage, Clyde Glos- som, Lloyd Everton, and Marvin Green. In addition to numerous singing engagements the A Cap- pella Choir participated in the spring concert, presenting a scene from grand opera. CLYDE GLOSSON MR. THOMAS Student, Teacher, and Coach 1928 - 1956 78 H.H.S. 20 Benedictine 7 The 1956 edition of the Red 'n White opened its sea son with a 20-7 triumph over Benedictine of Rich mond. The Crabber's veteran line, paced by Co Captain Kenton Patrick and end Bob Coltrane, held the Cadets in check throughout the game. Co-Cap tain Dellan Rossman sparked a green backfield, scor ing all three touchdowns. Danville 6 Crabbers roared past Danville 41-6 to win their second game of the season. Led by tailback Bridges, who scored two touchdowns, and Co-Captain Dellan Rossman, the Crabber offense much improvement over the Benedictine game. The Red 'n White's strong defense again the opponents to one touchdown. FOOTBALL qw W l T 1956 H.H.S. 33 Maury 7 The Red 'n White continued to roll along undefeated by beating Maury of Norfolk 33-7. Danny Bridges and Dellan Rossman were the spark plugs of the Crabber backfield, each scoring a touchdown. Fred Jones, Jimmy Stout, and John Ellerson helped to roll up the score with their touchdowns. The Crab- ber's rugged line held their opponents to a single touchdown for the third straight week. 79 H-H-S 22 Princess Anne 7 Cries of State Champs could be heard after the Crabber's fourth victory in a r--w. The Red 'n White completely out-classed the Cavaliers as the visitor's only touchdown came Igv virtue of an intercepted pass. Danny Bridges, rapidly developing into a top-flight tailback, scored one touchdown and passed to Rossman and Duchesne for two others. H.H.S. 26 Halifax 6 Halifax scored first, but after that it was all Hampton. The Red 'n White offense looked sharper than it has all year. With Dellan Rosfrman and Danny Bridges leading the way, the Crabbers stuck to the ground and controlled the ball most of the game. The Crabber defense tightened up after allow- ing an 80 yard touchdown run in The first period and held the Comets in check for the rest of the game. H.H.S. 27 lfjfbuth Norfolk 6 The Red 'n White rolled to its sixth straight win, in the mud and min. The Crabbers wwerful double- wing attack ground out three toxxchdowns in the first half and racked up one more in 'he second with reserves playing most of that period. Danny Bridges scored twice and Dellan Rossrran and Jimmy Stout each scored once to account for the Crabber's total. S H.H.S. 25 Granby 25 The Crabber's victory string was broken at six by a fired-up band of Granby Blue Comets. The Comets scored a touchdown and made the extra point with less than four minutes to play, to de- prive the Red 'n White of its seventh win. Fred Jones, Walter Porter, Dellan Rossman and Danny Bridges all scored for Hampton. mm First Row: Tommy Carlburg iMgr.J, Darden Nelms, Willie Mclvey, Ron- nie Goodyear, Allan Baxter, Ashby Lawson, Dellan Rossman CCO-Capt.J, Kenton Patrick fCo-Capt.J, Jimmy Stout, David Edwards, John Eller- son, Buddy Rogers, Hurly Cosby, Bud Porter. Determined not to let Hampton tie the series with a win. the Typhoons were successful in stopping the bull-like charges of Danny Bridges just short of a touchdown in the last quarter. Although he tried his best, Ross- man's injury wouldn't let him run well enough to play his usual outstanding game. This contest will go down on record as a battle of the defenses. 82 eff, 1... ,,- Y, , fee-- -4,..l,. ,A -any A44 m.,...,, N... ,ca wrt... - -... -,zxsr-'M MW... SHERMAN OF 1956 Coached by J. M. Suey Eason, the Crabbers posed a great threat in the race for the State Champion- ship. Paced by Fullback Danny Bridges, who was converted from the end position early in the season, and Co-Captain Dellan Rossman, the Red 'n White averaged at least two touchdowns more than their opponents for the first six games. The pass-catching hands of Jimmy Stout, John Ellerson, and Danny Phillips, combined with the running feet of Bud Por- ter, Fred Jones, Jimmy Taylor, and David Edwards helped to pile up 214 points for Hampton as com- pared to 89 for the opponents. This was made pos- . sible by the non-yielding Hampton defense who gave up only one touchdown to each of the con- quered foes. Co-Captain Kenny Patrick and big Leo CSulzbergerJ along with Ashby Lawson, Hal Burch, Eddy Johnson, and Neut Allen helped plug up the holes in the line while ends Bob Coltrane and Lee Yates and back Steve Moore stopped the 'round end plays. Toward the end of the season, the injuries began catching up with the Crabbers and a great deal of pressure was put on the running guards Jimmy Wilson and Kenny Ferguson and center George Dewhirst to block out the opposing players. After a hard fought battle with Granby, the game finally ended in a tie and the next game was a heart-breaker that ended with a defeat from Warwick by a small margin of five points. The Turkey Day Game with Newport News was typical of the many outstanding games of this State's Oldest High School Rivalry and very few were surprised that it could end in a nothing-to-nothing tie. 83 1 r 1 1st Row: Donald Buchanan, Charles Spencer, Jimmy Shields, Johnny Ruth, Jack Hogge, Ronald Buchanan, Warren McNamara, Kenny Carson. 2nd Row: Lendell Camden, Robert Carter, James Branscome, Dickie Brown, Franklin Mitchell, Curtis Newsome, Dave Langille. 3rd Row: Coach Niemela, Ed Swansey, Clif Gentry, Walt Lingebach.
