Displaying a' comparatively new team directed by Paul Evans playing from the tailback slot, the Crabbers scored all three touchdowns in the first half. The Red'N White's powerful line opened up numerous holes enabling Evans to score. Scoring for the Red'N white were Evans and Lawson, each going over once. The first touchdown came after a 64 yard drive with Evans, Helm. and Ross- man making repeated stabs at the line. Evans did the scoring. The second Crabber tally came after an 80 yard push with Lawson doing the scoring this time. Al- though the Frabbers fought back hard they just couldn't overcome the upset- minded Commodores. H. H. S. 18 G. W. of Danville 7 After defeating Benedictine, the Frabbers came against a powerful Danville team. Rossman and Helm playing in the wing- back slots combined to run the ends ragged, while Tri-Captain Paul Evans was tearing through the middle for those ex- tra needed yards. The scoring was done by Rossman, who scored twice. Evans made the other tally. George Washington never threatened the Red'N White because of the great defensive game of Don Mc- Pheron, Lewis Pearce, Willie Smith, and the rest of the forward wall with Helm, Boyd. and Rossman backing them up. mmzy sports nu-nun. 1- 1 f - ll. ll. With Law- son and Helm leading the way, the frab- bers got down to the 23 yard line which was as close as they ever got. The Warwick game gave the Red 'N White a record of 5 wins against 23 defeats. VARSITY BASKETBALL The Red'N White lost its Hrst three ball games in succession to the top three powers, Newport News, Warwick and Norview. With Paul Cowley, Graydon Elliot, and Dalma Drake running from the guard spots, and the rebounding and point producing of center Gene Wilson, forwards Walt Thomas and Jim Hathaway, the Crabbers started picking up the tempo. The Red'N White won the next five- straight before losing to the powerful Wilson Presidents from Portsmouth. After this defeat the Crabbers began to roll again. Knocking off team after team the Crabbers again faced the Norview Pilots. This time with revenge in mind the Crabbers walked off the court with a decisive victory. The Red'N White ended the regular season with 13 win to a 6 lost record. Next in line was the East- ern District Tournament in which the Crabbers weren't even expected to stay. In the first game with the Norview Pilots the Crabbers showed the people that they weren't to be taken too lightly. With Paul Cowley, who won the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament and Graydon Elliot hit- ting from the outside and Gene Wilson, Walt Thomas and Jim Hathaway controlling the backboards, the Crabbers backed up an important victory, by a score of 68 to 54. In the next game of the Tournament the Red'N White faced the powerful Typhoons. Hampton wasn't regarded as much of a team against the Blue and Gold but still fought hard only to lose out in the final three minutes by two points. After this defeat the Crabbers faced the Warwick Farmers for the third place spot and a trip to the State Tourney, in Richmond. In this game the Crabbers took complete charge all the way with Warwick's scoring stars Butch Lambiotte and Tommy Lanier bottled up by the defense thrown up by Coach Thomas. The Red'N White won this game, although they had been previously beaten by Warwick twice during the season. The Mighty Men headed to the State Tournament where they lost the first game to the powerful Blue and Gold from Newport News. The Red'N White gained respect from many fans with their determination and good sportsmanship. The Crabbers wound up the regular season in fourth place with a 13 win and 6 lost record. They also ended up in the number three' spot in the Eastern District Tournament where they will be re- membered by many fans both from Hampton and from the other side of the river. 126 ther sports go 012, Q 3 gf' .. -Q 'r -r ,..s. 0 K 'S IJICK MURKA Y .IG-gf? g,,J lj PAUL FUWLEY sv ,fl .hs .
