PITTIKIAN, IIARRY CALVIN Page Thirty-rlinc P OND, THUIXIAS ARTHUR CLASS I-IISTO RY V48 It all started back in ,44 when we first entered as freshmen at Hampton High School. Pride and ambition overwhelmed us until we realized We were mere freshmen, unseen by our upper classmen. After much confusion we adapted ourselves to our new routine. Football season brought much excitement, which came and went giving us our first experience of Crabber spirit. The Christmas holidays passed rapidly with little excitement, other than the progress of the war. On coming exams found us engulfed in study which proved profitable. With half our first step completed we were able to enjoy the remaining basketball games. Easter came, then more exams and summer plans were made. September of 1945 found us o11ce more trudging back after three glorious months of vacationing at our favorite sports. Many bright faces were seen throughout the student body, as September second of this year has ended the war and meant the returning of many whom we loved. The new lighting system in the stadium brightened our football season and increased the Crabber spirit which we had grown to love. February brought a new system for exams which consisted of a series of tests. This month also saw the enrollment of the first returning veterans who were finishing their high school education. As the term drew to a close we were placed a little higher in our educational status and sent home for our annual rest. Once again we returned to our favorite school after our summer lounging period. We were juniors now and walked with our heads a little higher, feeling as though many younger eyes were upon us. Football season induced talk of a championship team, but ill fate dropped us to second place. The greatly needed new band uniforms arrived and added much color to the spirited season. The Christmas holidays seemed much brighter this year as-we attended many dances and parties with our parents extending Page Forty our curfew. Soon we were confronted with much harder exams than those we had known. Yes, as our goal drew nearer, the going got tougher. Came February and we were a little higher in our glorified seniority. The National Honor Society was introduced in our school and we proudly placed several members on roll. Basketball season was mediocre and ended with the first sign of spring. As the days grew longer and Easter passed us by, once again we engulfed ourselves in study. We presented the seniors with their prom feeling both envious and sorry to see them go. The first week of june put us through exams and led us to many a rendez- vous, a little happier, a little wiser. Our September reunion seemed more elaborate than those of the past. Actually we felt a little blder as we walked once more the halls of Hampton High. The recontinuance of the Hampton-Newport News sports relations after a lapse of four years, made this an exceptionally exciting football season. The game was played Thanksgiving day and our Crabbers were victorious. With the ending of football season we held our election of senior officers. Those elected were as follows: President, Erdman Palmore, Vice President, Dana Holliday, Secretary, Marion Zedekarg Treasurer, Dudley Dewhirst. Mrs. Stevens was kept busy taking orders for our class rings and seeing that all pictures were taken for the annual. Upon completion of our exams, we stepped into the final stage of our high school careers. We witnessed the organization of our school paper and felt proud knowing we had contributed to its birth. With all details checked for our graduation, we are left feeling glad and sad with our high school days behind us. Our junior-senior prom put the final touches to our high school career. As we go into the many different fields in life, we feel competent and willing to make useful citizens of ourselves and make our educators proud of their teachings. Hampton High School will never be forgotten. The first show I attended was called The Starlight F ollies,', produced by none other than Bobby Goodman. Chorus girls included Ann Sutton, Myra Stanton, Jean Amory, Johnny Hopkins and Robert Stacey. The orchestra was directed by Conrad Drexel. After leaving the theatre, I attended the fearless motorcycle rider show, only to see Conley The Terror , Smith riding around the wall with Ann Parkin- son on his shoulders. I was glad the pair reached the top of the wall. The next place I attended was the penny arcade where, I ran into Doc Jones, Billy Green, Jerry Galloway, John Fitzgerald, Tommy Smith and C0ll1'tH6y Torian, who were representing the United States in football. Walking around the grounds, I passed a peanut store which was run by Harold and Barbara White Jennings. Other stands on the grounds were Fuller,s Hot Dog Stand Qwith Elmquist Blue Plate for the dayis specialj and James Woodwardls candy shop. Much to my amazement, I saw Bobby Lassiter posing for such great artists as Charles Gilliam, Ralph Dinwiddie and Eddie Carmines. In the animal show I saw Calvin Rhea talking to his monkeys with his face. Across the street from Rhea,s was a moving picture called the Little Dictatori' starring Billy Renn with Ann Speegle playing the part of his wife Maxine. Taking part in the contest of slinging the bull were Faye Croswell, leading contestant, Earl Andleton, Sue Bentley and Bert Violette. That afternoon I attended the auto races and who should be driving but Ann The Flashv Darling, Gwen Amory, Janet Reed, Jean Bodie and Jean Roberts. In the middle of the field I saw Mildred Davis and Wayne Griggs, Norma and Spencer Alligood Arnold, Louis Tillman and Kitty Liggan, looking at two unusual birds which had flocked together, a crow, Richard Shirk and his pigeon, Louie Liberty. After the auto race there was a track meet where Ward Hodge, Bill Walton, Bobby Yates, Dudley Dewhirst, Jack Carter and Ellis Firth were running. The winner with 25 and four-fifths points was a dark horse, Sally Storey. Dinner followed the meet as I ate at the cabin of my old pal, Joan Mater. That spaghetti surely was good. After dinner I attended the fair grounds once more to see Donald Robert- son and James Tucker dating. They were riding on the hobby horses which were run by Clarence Breen and his wife Ruth Cate. In one stand I bought some beautiful flowers only to see the owner was Don Patterson and his fiancee Lynn Hawkins. I was glad to see that he got what he wanted this own flower shopl. Mary Faris, Betty I Say VVait', Muller, Teddy Sirmyer and Molly Hoff were operating a shooting stand with U. S. Army rifles. fWhere did they get them?J From one tent the laughter encouraged me to visit, only to see Dorothy Parkinson and Jackie Poole running a pie-eating contest. The three winners were Two-Ton Tonyv Dana Holliday, Betty Ann Routten and Marie Trainham. The next thing I heard was singing and yelling, only to find Erdman Pal- more preaching at a revival meeting. His piano players were Jerry Jet Fingers Hilton and Peggy Veronica,' Dickens. Members of the choir were Charles Rutledge and Marion The Bodyv Zedekar. After having somewhat a religious background, I left to visit a basketball- throwing contest being operated by Lorea Hook-shotv Brinkley. Spectators H were jane I-Iornback, Delores Bergbom and Betty Page Duke, being escorted by Buddy Wingfield. I then went from basketball to a beauty contest which was held on the beautiful Lake Vivian. A few of the contestants were Barbara Poteat, joyce Stone, janet Rowe, Beverly Hillery, Orrin Morris and Phyllis Cunningham. . The grand prize having been awarded, I walked off only to run into two clowns, namely Ray Crockett and james Lambert. While conversing with them, Charles Robinson and his little sweet potutie joined the conversation. From a distance we heard music and a large band soon came into sight. Leading the band were five beautiful majorettes. They were Peggy Williams, Rebecca Williams, Hilda Singletary, Hyde Southall jones and Nathalia Stevens. I recognized a few faces in the band. I saw Sam Bent, Lloyd Beltz, jannie Buford, Betty jean Grant and Mahlen Melson. Behind that band came a hillabilly band led by Rodney Hull and his seven V irginians. This celebration was an introduction to the fearless tight-rope walker Courtney Birdwell Adams. Doctor Arthur Council, his wife, Ann Curtis, and two nurses, Ada Meador and Phyllis Tyree, were on hand in case of an accident. Following the parade, I walked down the street looking at the different stands and buildings. On the corner was a fire house which was painted in those beautiful colors of red and white. In case of fire, two fire trucks were at hand. The chief was Richard Baines, and his crew consisted of Robert Chappell, Ben Chambers, j. T. Cutler, jesse Crumpton and Billie Belle Brown. Next to the fire house was a bakery run by Robert Hot Cross Bunsv Ambrose and Mary jane Yates. Miss Yates is the ex-wife of Mr. Robert Clarke. While crossing the street, Milton Carpenter drove up and offered me a ride. The first place we stopped was an Esso Service Station, and who should be the attendant but Peggy Fitzgerald. Her grease-monkey was Paul Harrell. From there we journeyed just outside the fair grounds to take a ride in a speedboat. Our driver turned out to be Charles Lewis. We had to share our boat with Willie Hot Dogs Lennon, and Roberta Onions Vaughn. As we went speeding through the water, we passed Mary White and Bobby Harris sitting on a rock in the middle of the lake. Glancing into the water, what appeared to be two toad fish, turned out to be Virginia Waggerby and Bobby Wade. Returning to the pier, we were very surprised to run into Tommy Wheeler and his wife, Mary Speer, with their chauffer, Charles Wright. Leaving the lake, we drove down Cherry Blossom Road, where we saw Willie South, Thelma Craig, jane Day, Beatrice Green. Grayson Hayden, Geral- dine Ferguson, Virginia Hillery and Raymond Hogge riding bicycles. After thanking Milton for the ride, I got out realizing that it was getting late. Only time to get some ice cream before returning to my quarters. I visited the soda stand which was run by Ralph Saunders and his wife, Virginia Barnes. The soda jerks were Bobby Mickley and judy Riddick. While I was eating my ice cream I heard a record on the juke box, and who should be singing but the Grapevine Quartet. The quartet consisted of jean Overman, Audrey Mallory, jeff Harris and C. Atkins. After eating my ice cream, I started to my quarters. Before I left the fair grounds I saw a palmistry shop run by Miriam Car- penter and Doris Golden Earringsi' Hargrave. I finally arrived at my room, and as I was getting ready to get into bed I heard a mob of people out front and started to the window. Looking out, I saw all the students of my old graduating class that I had not seen at the Fair. As I turned and ran across the room, I tripped over the bed, and Oh, Ohl What a dream-or nightmare-I had. If I could only go there again! Little Tommy Edmonds brought the crowd to its feet as he nearly broke away for a touchdown on the initial kick-off. The Crabtown Eleven showed their true lighting spirit with Edmonds scoring in the second and third quarters and Amold converting after each for a perfect night to end the scoring at 14 to O. HAMPTON 28 LANE 7 The Fighting Crabbers made it two in a row by drubbing Lane High of Charlottesville in a fast game by a margin of 28 to 7. Hampton's scoring came in the first, second and last quarters, with Lane's only tally coming in the last minutes of the game against the Easonite reserves. Arnold converted after each tally with Carneal, Harpold and Edmonds spearheading the attack. HAMPTON 19 ALEXANDRIA 0 During a heavy rainfall, the Hamptoniuns defeated a heavy President eleven with an excellent passing attack by the score of 19 to 0. The Underdog Crabbers scored all of their points in the first half with Arnold converting one and Carneal, Edmonds and Harpold again leading the attack. HAMPTON 18 THOMAS JEFFERSON 18 Traveling to Richmond on their first road trip, the Cmbtown boys met a surprisingly tough T. J. eleven. In what proved to be a thrilling but bruising game, the Crabbers could only emerge with a tie. With Carneal, Fuller and Edmonds leading the way, the Crabbers scored in the first, second and third quarters, only to have T. J. come back in the last quarter to equal the Easonites' scoring. HAMPTON 19 DANVILLE 0 With Dandy Dick Carneal leading the way, the highly spirited Crabbers outclassed the country boys to the tune of 19 to 0. The Crabbers, being held at bay during the lirst quarter, came to life in the second quarter in what proved to be a thrilling exhibition of football. C0-Captain Calvin Rhea, sidelined with a knee injury, was inserted into the game during the second half to get the fine Red and White footballers moving, The route proved to be very rough, but the Crabbers proved to be the better team with fine sportsmanship and an excellent exhibition of football. Page Eighty-F our HAMPTON 26 SALEM 0 On their last road trip of the 1947 season, the Crabbers trounced the Wolverines by the score of 26 to 0. Dick Cameal, using his mighty passing arm, threw perfect passes to every available receiver on the team. The Crabbers were able to score at will, and Coach Suey Eason used his substitutes freely throughout the game. Hesmer, the big gun of Salem's attack, was removed early in the game after he was hit extremely hard by big Tommy Bowers. Salem managed to score once in the last quarter, but an oflside penalty renounced the score. l HAMPTON 13 WILSON 21 In what proved to be the most exciting game in the Darling Memorial Stadium for a number of years, the Wilson Prexies defeated Hampton in the deciding game of the Class A Football Championship to the tune of 21 to 13. Hampton, being the underdog and outweighed 30 pounds to the man, led the Prexies 18 to 0 all the way up to the third quarter, but the game Wilson eleven came back to score three touchdowns in the last quarter and put the game on ice. As 13,000 fans left the ball park, they were quite amazed at the outcome of the game, but the overwhelming weight of the Prexies proved to be the deciding factor in the first defeat of the Cmbbers. HAMPTON 6 LYNCHBURG 0 After losing the first game of the season to Wilson, the Hampton Crabbers were not up to par when the Hilltoppers invaded Darling Memorial Park. Hampton's lone tally came in the second quarter when Harpold took a reverse from Edmonds and went over standing up. The Lynchburg eleven was a constant threat throughout the game, but was unable to penetrate the Cmbbers' line for a score. HAMPTON 19 NEWPORT NEWS 12 The Hampton High Cmbbers, first half scoring punch gained them a 19 to 12 victory over Newport News at Hampton in the renewal of the annual Thanksgiving Day series between the two schools, but the Crabbers had to stave off numerous threats by the Typhoon in the second half of a thrilling football game to secure their victory. Co-Captain Dick Cameal was the big gun of the Hampton eleven, while Taylor, Hahn and Stephenson stood out for the Typhoons. Taylor's passing nearly brought Newport News a tie in the last minutes of play, but fate stepped in and Elmo Stephenson dropped a pass on the goal line. The game was very cleanly played, with no hint of unsportsmanlike conduct being shown. Hahn and Stephenson did the scoring for the Typhoon eleven, while Harpold and Carneal scored for the Rid and White, with Eugene Hays converting the lone extra point.
